Along with the classics, we have a continually updated Specials Board where our chefs love to show their flare and creativity.
The highlight of our culinary week is undoubtedly our Sunday Carvery. Vegetarians are also well catered for, with many of our dishes available with a vegetarian option, including our carvery which comes with TWO homemade vegetarian choices – a delicious nut roast and a vegan lentil roast.

My Dad was visiting for the first time in 3 years, I took him there for Father’s Day which he loved so back we went, Was greeted by Danielle our waitress was a young girl called Amy who was amazing, and our chef was the lovely Emma,
Fantastic food good service in a lovely dog friendly pub by the beach. Life is hood
Very enjoyable, the food was lovely and reasonably priced.
Sunday lunch is very popular. You must book or expect to wait. Carvery was fantastic both times I have eaten.
Food was lovely. Staff very friendly. Not sure if we got forgotten though, we were sat behind a pillar, as the wait was longer than the staff said. Lovely atmosphere. Thank you
Family Sunday Lunch. 3 of us had the carvery which was excellent and my wife had the fish pie and she enjoyed it very much. The portion sizes are very generous and I struggled to finish the adult carvery. Would definitely recommend
Staff were friendly. Drinks served straight away. Bit of a wait for the food to arrive but was good when it did.
A family of 4 and a dog . Lovely warm welcome and fantastic service from the lady with the blonde hair in a ponytail. Food was really delicious and lovely big portions, was great value for money and dog friendly too , and they even had a doggy menu of sausages or doggy nuggets which was fun . Would definitely go again . Was right by the seafront too .
Amazing staff with very friendly service. We booked to sit inside as outside was unavailable to book online, yet when we got there, there was a table outside free, which the staff said we could sit at. Food was delicious. I’m just a bit confused that there is no smoking outside, unless you go into the one small shelter provided, but there is also a specific no smoking area outside.
Not everything on the menu was available, but good food and excellent service.
Wonderful place with wonderful staff and excellent food. The ploughman’s was the best one we’ve had
We booked a table at short notice and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. The service was excellent and food excellent value for money. We had an excellent evening and decided to go back the following evening and as before the whole evening was fantastic. A Big thank you to all the staff.
Fantastic food just what we needed before heading home. Glad we booked in advance
We love the Smugglers. Staff are all friendly and helpful. The carvery is absolutely the best!
Great staff lovely food
Absolutely brilliant food. Will definitely be going back at some point during are stay at Downderry
Had booked table outside for 7pm had to go and find a member of staff at 7.20pm to ask for a drink. A member of staff came to take our order, we ordered 2 starters and 2 mains. Starters came out quickly, 1 was cold. Staff came to remove the plates for starters at 7
We then sat waiting for our mains for a long time, in the end a young member of staff came to see if we were OK, we told him we were still waiting for our main course and asked if they could put lights on as it was now pitch dark. Lights were broken so couldn't have them on. Food finally arrived around 8.25pm. Why have the option to book a table outside if staff are not going to wait on them. We have ate at the smugglers for the last 5yrs and never had a problem before.
Been a few years since I was on holiday in Seaton, the Smugglers hasnt changed much, the food was okay, average really, service good, wasnt very busy when we were there, so not much of an atmosphere.
Had to wait over an hour for meal.had to ask for drinks and lack of attention. Tables very close together.parking was expensive and rammed. Would not go again.
Staff member was very friendly HOWEVER after pre-booking due to staff shortages in kitchen we still had to wait well over an hour for ours mains which to be honest wasn't great 1 Starter was miss sold and missing the hot baguette. We booked table for 6.15 as we had a young baby with us and wanted to eat early we would have left expect that they make you prepay in advance.
Service not great as only 2 people doing everything. Asked a simple question and got met with a very short sharp reply!!
We have been coming to seaton for the last 5 yrs. We always eat at the smugglers and we have never had a bad meal. Staff are always friendly and polite, another big plus is they are very dog friendly with plenty of water bowls for them.
Meal was a little late (still very busy for the staff) but service was excellent.
There was a delay on food due to staff shortages but the staff that were there were lovely and kept us informed. We were on holiday so were not in any rush. Since we visited last year there had been a refurb and it looked amazing.
Very mediocre food, no atmosphere, didn’t receive all order and ended up with sides coming after everyone had finished.
When on holiday, we always head for The Smugglers, easy to book a table on line, good service and good food.
Food was good pub standard, service was very friendly and didn’t have to wait too long for the food, which I was a bit worried about after seeing some other reviews - no problem for us though
Thank you for your lovely review. We are glad you had an enjoyable visit. Although we have undoubtedly been extremely busy through the summer, we have always been clear where there is a delay in our service, and we also expect our custom to return to slightly more normal levels now the summer holidays are ending!
Booked a table for 7 people outside 1 week in advance but on arriving were advised that we would be on 2 separate tables/benches.
After ordering and paying we were told by the waiter that there could be up to 1 hour wait for food due to it being busy.
3 of our party had ordered off standard menu and received their food after 30 mins. The rest of us were ordering a roast from the carvery and were eventually called up to be served at counter. At this point the staff serving disappeared into kitchen with some apologies about having to get something. One of the staff licked their fingers on route into Kitchen and then proceeded to rub their face a number of times whilst standing behind kitchen door. The serving staff then returned and promptly served our food and we returned to our table. The food was reasonable quality and generous portions but the presentation of the food was lacking finesse.
Overall the food was acceptable but the communication from serving staff was disappointing. There was a lack of communication between Kitchen and serving staff and no control over the number of bookings at a busy period.
I would not rush to book a table at the pub in the future based on this recent experience.
It appears the pub thinks that the continuous turnover of new tourist customers means they can provide a sub-standard service and do not need to worry about repeat customers or local reputations.
Thanks for your review. A couple of points: You passed a large sign indicating the wait for food before you sat down. You visited us, a Cornish beach-side pub at the height of a our busiest bank holiday weekend Despite this you all got fed in much less than the advised wait time, result! Our chefs always wash their hands before returning to the Carvery deck Our bookings are constantly controlled to prevent unmanageable crowds 80% of our year-round carvery custom is serial-returning locals
Very mediocre food
But nice setting
A place full of character and interesting features with a warm and friendly welcome. The different areas are well worth scrutiny and an 18th century atmosphere is fantastically evoked in some areas. The galleon room is a work of genius and the various books and crannies are evocative of a Sherlockian story too.
I liked the references to the Green Man dotted throughout. Hats off to the owners for creating a very special place - the food was enjoyable too.
Great food excellent service we sat outside could be a bit more dressed up with bunting etc. Inside looked very cosy.
Food was excellent and plenty of it, there was a bit of a wait, nothing ridiculous but it didn't appear too busy. Would visit again and loved the decor and friendly staff.
Great place, staff we're very helpful and friendly. Food was perfect. Would recommend.
This was a first time visit, though passed by many times. Booked a table for Sunday lunch, and although we arrived 20 Minutes early, we were immediately shown to a table and offered drinks.
We went up to the carvery right on the time we booked for, and our plates were literally loaded up with generous portions of meat, plus all the usual veg, gravy, and those huge choux pastry style ‘Yorkshires’.
Pleasant prompt service, good portions, and reasonable prices. What more could you ask for ?
Food lovely, and enjoyable experience for Sunday lunch.
Great service, good food and value for money. Lovely pub and a lovely beach to walk your meal off
Great vegan food again looking forward to revisiting
Great position near Seaton beach and super meal.I would recommend eating here.
Bit disappointed really, looks a great place - not really busy took over an hour and fifteen for food which came out “tepid” despite being told to mind the plates as they were hot! Whether it’s staff shortages I don’t know but it didn’t deliver for us as a family and sadly won’t be returning
Very nice food, presented nice but waiting a bit long. I will still visit ☺
