The Smith - U Street
My second time at The Smith and I continue to be impressed by the deliciousness of the food. This is not just your basic restaurant fare - it is legit scrumptious. Mac and cheese, crab tots, bolognese, pastrami spiced salmon, burger; all could be boring but were literally remarkably tasty and well-prepared with thoughtful touches and accompaniments. Yum!
Service was meh, got sorted right away but no server/water for the next 15mins. But food was tasty!
The food was great and the service was good. I'd highly recommend ordering the avocado toast. It was very delicious.
Ordered the Sicilian Baked Eggs and the eggs where over cooked which was disappointing, but everything is was good.
We came in for brunch and it did not disappoint. The Benedict Johnny was filling and delicious, with the tomato hollandaise was amazing. My husbands breakfast pot pie was just as good. Jose our server was on point. We liked it so much we spoke with the Manager and suggested they open another in Baltimore.
Fantastic birthday brunch!
We went here for brunch. Our entrees were not very good. While not overpriced for the area, the food was mediocre and not very well prepared. The food was just kind of slimy. The drinks were strong, but a weird combination of flavors. The ambiance was terrible--it was extremely loud even though the restaurant was not super packed when we were seated. We won't be going back.
Small portions dfor what the food cost. But very good food
Everything was off
Ate here for Valentine’s night with my boyfriend. The food was great. The service from our waitress was amazing—never got her name unfortunately. Made a reservation for 7PM, showed up 20 minutes late and we still got seated immediately. They accommodated the request I made about seating arrangements. Was pretty loud like others have said so it was kinda hard to hear what our waitress was saying half of the time but it wasn’t unbearably noisy. Would for sure return.
The food and service was great! Our server was very attentive and gave excellent recommendations. And when a drink was made incorrectly, they promptly sent a complimentary new one and the floor manager came over to apologize. A great Valentine’s Day dinner experience!
Valentine’s Day Dinner for the Family. We really enjoyed the food and the service. A nice gathering place!
My expectations were not met. I had such high hopes because the atmosphere looks great, but the service was slow even though the dining room was half empty. It took about 15 minutes to get one alcoholic beverage and a glass of lemonade (which was not good). The calamari appetizer was not what was expected for the price, however the fish tacos were pretty good. I will not return on my own accord.
I do not recommend going here for brunch. I had a reservation for 1:15pm and was not seated until 2pm. We sat a a very small table that barely held our food and drinks. The food took almost an hour to come out and when it did it was cold. They did comp our meal which was nice considering that I didn't eat it.
Ambience and food was great but the service was slow, waited 25 minutes after reservation time. No apology, the hostess was avoiding and leaving the desk....
Had a good brunch at The Smith. The food was phenomenal, service was mediocre, and the noise level was a bit crazy and made it hard to hear right across the table.
Overall I would definitely go back. It was extremely busy and we were sitting in a cave-like area of the restaurant that probably made the noise level much worse. Service was a bit slow, but not too noticeable.
Very good on all fronts! I will say that the music was too loud, and I would’ve like more brunch options. However, that will not stop me from coming back! Beautiful ambiance, great service and awesome brunch deal!
Had a great dinner at the Smith after a late afternoon movie at the nearby Atlantic Plumbing cinema. The food was terrific, especially the roasted tomato soup (served with melted cheese on top like French onion soup) and the superb short ribs. We had a table in the corner, so the noise level wasn't too bad, but given all the hard surfaces in the restaurant (ceramic tile everywhere), a table in the middle would have been noisier.
I really enjoy The Smith. Always have a great time. The salad I got (Kale Caesar) had just a little bit too much dressing on it for my liking, so next time I'll probably ask for the dressing on the side instead. The drinks we got were really delicious though and the service overall was good.
Very good service and great food. A little on the noisy side but that could mean a crowded house.
Great brunch “date” with my husband. Attentive and helpful staff! Loved the energetic vibe & music - both just right to enjoy our own conversation, eats, & drinks!
Energetic vibe. A small horde of pleasant servers took care of us. The food is very nice. Not memorable but pleasing. The bartenders do strong work.
First time visitor
Great food and atmosphere!
The restaurant was noisy. The portions were too large but tasty. The ambience was good for a brunch if the noise level was reduced.
Service was friendly and attentive — always someone there to take a plate away even if you weren’t finished. Located in a fun area.
My mom was in town visiting and we went out here and had such a great time. A really sweet waitress and food was fantastic.
The Smith is a great restaurant for brunch - good prices and you get a free drink with your entree!
The avocado toast was one of the least interesting I've had...especially for the price. I've made better at home. If you don't get the free brunch drinks I don't think the prices are worth it.
Hostess was fairly rude. We had a reservation at 8, and at 8:15 we inquired as to how much longer it would be, and were told fairly bluntly that “they can’t control how long people stay.” We know that of course, and just were hoping to get an update, but were disappointed with the response. Overall experience was fine. Food very good though a little pricey. Took a little while longer than expected to be asked if we needed another drink, to the point of having to flag down our waitress.
Very energetic Saturday night dinner with friends. Bar was busy and every table was filled. Recommend reservations ahead of time and nightly specials on the menu are always fantastic (great Short rib Saturday’s!)
Fabulous. Cool. Amazing cocktails.
This was my second time eating at the Smith. My salmon was amazing, the server was great, the restaurant was mostly empty so I was able to have a great afternoon meeting.
We got the paella. It was ok. I didn’t like the mayo sauce that was on top of it. It made the dish too moist and really isn’t necessary for paella. It detracted from the flavor of the seafood.
Great brunch! The Smith Eggs Benedict with perfect poached eggs and crisp hash browns just can’t be beat. Endless sparkling and flat water is a much touch.
Terrible terrible service. Took 30 minutes to take our order, forgot one of our meals and lied that they remembered it and it came 20 minutes later, we’re extremely rude to us and dismissive of any questions we had about the menu, and after all of their admitted issues they refused to spilt the check between us. Very rude and horrendous experience all the way around. Have been here other nights and at least the food was decent.
We ordered our bottle of wine and food at the same time. The food came out 'too quickly' i.e. say 10 mins but the wine didn't come for over a half hour. I kept on asking, as i wanted to have wine with our dinner which is totally the correct order of service. Then we were presented with the wrong bottle. then when we were finally given the right bottle (a red burgundy) it was cellar temp... i.e. the temperature white wine should be served at. i mentioned this and we didn't get any discount.
I love the mac n cheese!!!
First time where it was a positive experience and I would recommend this restaurant to others.
Very knowledgeable and super kind servers; the ambience is real nice, and so was the food. Service was great, and they were very attentive. A little bit on the noisy side, but still enjoyable. We tried the special for Thursday, which was really good.
Disgusting food—I actually couldn’t finish it and I got sick all night.
Terrible service—we had to ask for spoons, knives, forks, water, had to get up more than once to finally get a waiter taking or credit card.
Ambiance: i had spotlights on my face during the whole dinner. Music is not appropriate. Not cosy, not romantic, not fun. Seemed like a cafeteria.
On the plus side, they have qui a bit of GF options but still, I would never go back there.
