The Smith - U Street
Great brunch food!
Dinner with a friend after yoga. Food and service were both outstanding. Noise level was very high.
We've been here for brunch and it was great, not so great this time for dinner. The food was just meh, not great presentation or taste and definitely not hot. Disappointed after ordering our drinks, our server came back to tell us they were out of ingredients for the drink I wanted, but she couldn't say which ingredients they were missing...
Our server was fairly new and hadn't eaten most of the menu, so she couldn't advise us on how to order. Also she delivered another table's drinks and picked up dirty glasses and then put them on the same tray with our drinks... definitely a no no.
She was nice enough but clearly not well trained.
I had a party of 18 at The Smith on a busy weekend. We had a great table, two awesome waitresses and delicious food! Many people were there for the first time and commented it was the best dinner they had had in a long time.
Susan was an excellent server. Love the kale salad with kale. Disappointed that we did not get booth seating as we had requested when we reserved a week ago.
Made a reservation only a day before, got the exact time I wanted for lunch, walked right in and sat down, really friendly service that was very sensitive to the allergy needs of our table, great ambience and not too loud, and the food was excellent. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
Great Saturday morning brunch. Service was fantastic.
We went for Valentine’s Day and had a great time. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about their menu.
Food was great and service was great and I loved the vibe of the restaurant
Pork ribs special was not very good at all. Dry and not flavorful
Great food, drinks and service! Usually we have dinner but this time came for lunch and had the same positive experience. They could turn down the music a bit once there is sufficient patron chatter to fill the room. Our party of 4 found ourselves in competition with the music.
Every time I come here it is FINE. Not amazing not terrible. Veggies options extremely limited.
Always good quality good and service. Unfortunately, our table wasn’t ready for quite a while after our reservation time. And, the noise level is also an issue.
The food was honestly delicious!! We went for brunch and really enjoyed their home fries and eggs benedict! The ambiance was also amazing. I would recommend and would go back.
We had a large party- 12 for a birthday and it was the perfect spot. Appetizers were great.
Very busy place. Service needs improvement.
This is an excellent choice for brunch. It’s loud but you can ask to be seated away from the main area where it tends to get noisy. The cocktails are divine and they have a wide variety with something for everyone. My shrimp and jalapeño grits were quite tasty!
I highly recommend this place and will be back.
We ate brunch at The Smith. The food was good but it was very expensive. They threw in a “free” cocktail with a brunch order but in actuality it wasn’t free because an order of any breakfast item was $15 plus. So, it was already figured into the price. Service was good and attentive but also a bit overbearing. Someone cane by every two minutes to see if they could take a plate away. It made us feel rushed. Overall, it was a good brunch in a nice restaurant. Good ambiance and energetic vibe.
Food was very good. Several of us had ordered the chicken sausage and had noted that it was still pink inside, which was disappointing. However, when we had mentioned that this was the case, our waiter quickly exchanged the dish for a new one at no cost.
I would recommend The Smith as it was good. However, I personally think it was a bit on the expensive side for what it is.
The food was quality but the service was unfortunately subpar! The Smith is one of my favorite spots to eat brunch and dinner at in DC so I thought it would be a good place to book my birthday dinner. Our waitress barely touched our table all evening. There were many times when we wanted to order more drinks and food items but she was nowhere to be found. She seemed nice but also woefully unprepared for a larger party and lacking in engagement.
Food was fabulous. Service was great, we loved it
Great brunch spot. We had a wonderful time and our server did an amazing job with it all.
We had a slight problem with our order. The kitchen messed up our food and it took longer than usual. But the excellent customer service and management made up for it.
I've been to the Smith on 14th for brunch, and had a great experience with the service, drinks, and food. So much so that I decided to host a birthday dinner at the U Street location. I was unimpressed with the both the cocktails and food, and sent a cocktail and dish back to the kitchen due to the bad taste. I appreciate delicious food, but unfortunately the Smith did not do it for me. Lastly, we brought a cake and I was shocked to find a $20 cutting fee on the receipt, especially when the waiter did cut the entire cake, but a few pieces. I doubt I will return.
Great time and great food. My only feedback is that it felt like they were rushing us through our meal and out the door to turn over the table. I understand Saturday at 11am is a busy time but your customers shouldn’t feel rushed because of it.
Wonderful experience! Literally, some of the best food I’ve had. Highly recommend the salmon and mussels.
The food is great, but the service is slow every time.
Great brunch! Very enjoyable time, good service and even better food!
We had a large group of 16 people for brunch - they were incredibly accommodating of the large group and made our reunion brunch great!
Our server was not having a good service... calamari app came out the same time as entrees... he clearly didn’t set the kitchen up for success there.
He basically didn’t listen at all to what our needs were... for instance he brought out for us a large carafe if wine when we had a full conversation on a glass of wine vs a small carafe.
You may want some additional training so he’s set up for success
Cocktails were good, service, particularly from the bar was very slow and the room was excessively loud. Staff was very nice though.
Food was good but the service was a little slow. Took quite a while to get coffee, bread. Pasta dish with hen-of-the-wood mushrooms was great.
We had a reservation, waited an extra 10 minutes, and somehow we were seated so close to the door that those standing and waiting for tables had their butts on our table. Not to mention we had to leave on our scarves to stay warm. Eventually the host came by, and I explained my discontent and he quickly rectified the situation.
We were re-seated, and the location was excellent. Unfortunately, it appeared that the restaurant was not prepared for the large number of patrons, because service was slow. However, we had Kayla, who was both apologetic and upbeat regardless of the apparent exhaustion of the staff. She was excellent.
All-in-all, it was once again, a very good experience, but I'd like to get to an OUTSTANDING experience with The Smith, because I really love the atmosphere, the drinks, and the food.
Overall, it was a good time. As expected brunch was packed. Our server was very friendly and was always checking in on us. The food was delicious. Now the drinks on the other hand… that was the down side of the morning. We ordered our drinks and then our food. The bar drinks came out maybe 2 minutes before our food came out which was in not means quick but it was expected as the restaurant was packed. Our coffee and hot chocolate (which was delicious) came out mid-way through eating our breakfast.
The managers were running around making sure tables were flipped and people were being sat, but they really need to pay more attention to when the bartender gets backed up and step in and lend a hand. It would have also been the right thing to do, to do some table touches and let people know they are running behind and that they appreciate your patience.
We went this past weekend for brunch. When you walk in - the vibrant loud sounds from the bar feel energetic. We were excited to be there. The host and hostess kept their heads down staring at the desk and avoiding eye contact. Our group waited 30 minutes for our reservations. (People who walked in after us waited about the same amount of time.) When we were finally seated, our waiter was friendly and knowledgable. He took our full order and then completely disappeared. We were seated over 30 minutes before our drinks arrived. When they came, the cappuccino was warm -not hot. Overall the food was fine. The challah French toast was fantastic and the shrimp and grits were very good. If you go - skip the breakfast pot pie - it's too heavy on sausage gravy. Two in our party ordered the roasted tomato soup with cheddar melt. (The cheddar melt is like French onion soup - melted cheese over a piece of bread.) One soup arrived with everyone else's meals - the other soup arrived 15 minutes later. It was awkward bc the soup was for one of our kids and we didn't know if we should eat or wait. Other little things made the experience a bummer. No toilet paper in the bathroom. It was impossible to get refills on water because no one checked on our table. The pepper grinder was empty. We were really excited to try out The Smith - and the lack of friendly service totally ruined the brunch outing with our out of town family. Sunday brunch was definitely busy - and it seemed the restaurant was unpreppared to serve patrons.
Never again for pre-theater. Took 43 mins to get our food and drinks from arrival. Would have been longer if we had not called a manager to place the order. One order was cold upon arrival. Gave us about 10 mins to eat - thanks. They were nice enough to comp the tea they forgot to bring - thanks again.
The service was AMAZING. Our waitress Kayla is the best. I will always ask for her when I return. The food was also very tasty and the prices are reasonable. I will definitely be back.
Venue space is tight.
Don’t remember my server’s name but she was awesome! I can’t wait to bring more of my friends here!
