The Smith - U Street
At times the bar gets backed up and the cocktails came at the very very end of the meal instead of with food. Friendly folks here, so no huge deal
Our server was rude and slow. Took over 25 minutes just to place a drink order which took another 15-20 minutes to get. Took over a hour to receive our food however orders were incomplete and cold. Our server was extremely rude and did very little to remedy the issues we had. Eventually we had to speak with a manager to get things in order after which took 15 more minutes to get. So half our party (5 guest) was enjoying their food while others waited patiently to receive our food...All in all, was not a good place to take my mother for "brunch" on her 71st Birthday
Large brunch space with standard brunch fare. Good for groups with a reservation but setup of the restaurant makes it quite noisy so it can be difficult to hear. Purchase of an entree is inclusive of one of their specialty brunch cocktails, which is a nice touch.
Always good food and service. Never disappointed. The house chips with cheese fondue are fantastic!
Really excellent service!
Always love brunch at The Smith! Can’t beat the brunch entree + cocktail for ~$20!
The experience was AMAZING!
Excellence across the board. Manager Ben, maitre'd Jay, mgr Jarrod -- superb. Business lunch and server whose name I don't recall interrupted maybe 6-7 times to get us to order entrees -- bit pushy but he only had 2 tables to tend to as it was not so busy that Friday. Going back next week for a big birthday dinner though! Really miss server named Edmond. Set the standard for servers/service par excellence in this or any restaurant.
There’s so much flavor in every bite. The chicken wings are messy but very good!
Where to begin...I was greeted by the General Manager Richard. He was very polite, professional and genuinely. I worked with Jessica, who was attentive, great patience, and a joy to work with! Great recommendations.
Horrible experience. Drinks took forever. Starters took a while. We were then told that they no longer have what we ordered - 45 min later. The manager was nice enough to acknowledge everything but nonetheless it was a bad experience as we were starving.
Very pretty restaurant with good food and a beautiful bar.....BUT, it was incredibly noisy!
We were seated quickly and the cocktail with the brunch entree is a great value added. Unfortunately, my eggs weren't cooked to order so I reluctantly had to send my plate back, although my steak was perfect. Instead of a newly cooked steak, my steak was reheated, hence then overcooked and dry.
Overall, I love this place, so I'll take this as a one off.
We had a reservation at 11:30 am and we were only seated at 12:00 pm. Our hostess wasn't friendly and when we asked her when the table would be ready she would say " it would only take only 5 minutes" but we ended up waiting for a longer period of time. Our waitress never came over to our table without being prompted. Some of us ordered juice and we never received our drink even after asking 2-3 times. Our waitress was rude and didn't refill our waters and we had to wait a long time to order our food. She charged us extra for our drinks even though it would come free with our brunch items. Our entire section was constantly waiting on her and a lot of the other customers had complained to the manager. She didn't give us the dessert menu until we asked for it multiple times and she threw our credit cards on the table at the end. When we asked her questions she didn't answer them and overall her attitude was very poor. I understand that it was busy but it's not fair to customers to have a bad experience when we didn't do anything. We arrived at 11: 25 and only left at 3:30 pm because of the crazy waiting we had to do here!!
A little pricey for the quality, but overall a great place to eat with wonderful service and good drinks!
Took my wife for her birthday brunch after reading reviews and it was a good experience.
Service was poor - but the food is delicious! Another friend said that the service was especially bad that night, but also noted it's normally not the greatest.
A great addition to the neighborhood and love the vibe
The service and food is always exceptional.
Excellent food, but very frustrating that when dining with a group of 14 our server was either unwilling or unable to split checks among parties, refusing to even split the bill between two groups of seven.
Have eaten there twice in the last 2 weeks. Went back the second time because the food was very good and decided to give them a second chance on service. They failed. First, we were seated in the bar area upon arrival not the dining room area. I had a reservation. Second, I had to tell the waiter we were ready to order drinks. Third the drinks took 15-20 min to arrive. Waiter kept asking if we wanted to order food we had to keep saying wanted our drinks first. It's too bad they can't get their act together on the service because the food is very good.
Food was excellent. Restaurant was really hot. Not sure if the air was working. One of our friends had to leave because the heat made her feel sick.
Waiter was not the best and for a Saturday night, I would think they would have managed the service and the crowd better. In the hot restaurant, waiter brought lukewarm water to the table; had to request cold water. Then he kept getting drink orders wrong, friend who came 20 minutes later got his drink before we did. After getting food, (it was brought to the table by someone else), he didn’t stop by to see if we needed anything. We had to wave him down every time we needed something.
We totally understand it was a busy restaurant on a Saturday night, but we’ve been to The Smith’s before and had better service. It’s unfortunate that the night we chose this restaurant to host out of town friends, it was a bit of a disappointing time at the restaurant, although the food was a definite recovery (from the bad service and humid and hot restaurant) as it was delicious as always.
Brunch was AMAZING! The complimentary brunch cocktails were an added treat!
Love the place, but extremely noisy. High energy and great people
Salmon is excellent, it’s a must try!
Service was indifferent, food was okay, the worst was the NOISE - way too loud to have a conversation. The best part was being able to make a reservation.
I went to the Smith last weekend with a small group of friends. Our service was probably the worst I have ever received in DC. Our waiter forgot to to take our dinner order and we had to ask another employee if someone was going to ever take our order. Everything took a long time, including receiving the bill even though by the end of it all the restaurant was almost completely empty. We noticed that even tables of 12+ people that had sat down after our small group of 6 had already left! Totally unacceptable for the type of establishment it is.
Great food and drinks. Went there on a Saturday evening. It was very full and very noisy. Staff and service were great.
The French toast was a bit chewy; we were expecting light and airy. However, the taste and flavor was very good. The ranchero scramble was good, however the avocado fan spread should be separated (personal opinion)
Good food, fun place but NOISY! Nothing to dampen the sound so hard to hear people at your own table. But delicious
I went for brunch. The service was good—attentive without being pushy or making me feel rushed (but I had to ask the server to have the over-eager busser to slow down on clearing my almost-empty glasses, which they both addressed right away—thumbs up for that). The food options were good and well-prepared, as were the drinks (I like the barnstormer). It’s not haute cuisine, but if you’re looking for a solid brunch with interesting takes on standards (Johnny Benedict is eggs Benedict
with a southern twist) that are well-prepared, good cocktails and good service, here it is.
Great place to people watch! The food was pretty good however the French Toast may be made out of a banana batter because the bread was soggy and a bit under done.
The host sat us between the bar and the open window/wall. It was extremely loud with many gregarious happy hour patrons. I had a hard time hearing my date over the very loud drunks.
The waitress seemed annoyed that she had to serve us and very rarely checked in or stopped by. The Penn Quarter location is much nicer, quieter, friendlier.
Service was uncharacteristically slow on this visit; however food and drinks were great as usual.
Our waiter Troy was the best! Brunch was delicious and the drinks were amazing!
Friendly and helpful.
Always love the Smith. NYC or DC - the consistency is fantastic. We split the watermelon salad and the truffle gnocchi - and they were delicious. Need a guaranteed good meal to hit the spot, go to the Smith.
Average. Nothing special.
Food was delicious. Servers were polite and checked in throughout most of the meal. They forgot about our appetizers, however, which came out after our entrees. Overall a very nice time.
