The Smith - U Street
The service and food is always exceptional.
Have eaten there twice in the last 2 weeks. Went back the second time because the food was very good and decided to give them a second chance on service. They failed. First, we were seated in the bar area upon arrival not the dining room area. I had a reservation. Second, I had to tell the waiter we were ready to order drinks. Third the drinks took 15-20 min to arrive. Waiter kept asking if we wanted to order food we had to keep saying wanted our drinks first. It's too bad they can't get their act together on the service because the food is very good.
Food was excellent. Restaurant was really hot. Not sure if the air was working. One of our friends had to leave because the heat made her feel sick.
Waiter was not the best and for a Saturday night, I would think they would have managed the service and the crowd better. In the hot restaurant, waiter brought lukewarm water to the table; had to request cold water. Then he kept getting drink orders wrong, friend who came 20 minutes later got his drink before we did. After getting food, (it was brought to the table by someone else), he didn’t stop by to see if we needed anything. We had to wave him down every time we needed something.
We totally understand it was a busy restaurant on a Saturday night, but we’ve been to The Smith’s before and had better service. It’s unfortunate that the night we chose this restaurant to host out of town friends, it was a bit of a disappointing time at the restaurant, although the food was a definite recovery (from the bad service and humid and hot restaurant) as it was delicious as always.
Brunch was AMAZING! The complimentary brunch cocktails were an added treat!
Love the place, but extremely noisy. High energy and great people
Salmon is excellent, it’s a must try!
Service was indifferent, food was okay, the worst was the NOISE - way too loud to have a conversation. The best part was being able to make a reservation.
I went to the Smith last weekend with a small group of friends. Our service was probably the worst I have ever received in DC. Our waiter forgot to to take our dinner order and we had to ask another employee if someone was going to ever take our order. Everything took a long time, including receiving the bill even though by the end of it all the restaurant was almost completely empty. We noticed that even tables of 12+ people that had sat down after our small group of 6 had already left! Totally unacceptable for the type of establishment it is.
Great food and drinks. Went there on a Saturday evening. It was very full and very noisy. Staff and service were great.
The French toast was a bit chewy; we were expecting light and airy. However, the taste and flavor was very good. The ranchero scramble was good, however the avocado fan spread should be separated (personal opinion)
Good food, fun place but NOISY! Nothing to dampen the sound so hard to hear people at your own table. But delicious
I went for brunch. The service was good—attentive without being pushy or making me feel rushed (but I had to ask the server to have the over-eager busser to slow down on clearing my almost-empty glasses, which they both addressed right away—thumbs up for that). The food options were good and well-prepared, as were the drinks (I like the barnstormer). It’s not haute cuisine, but if you’re looking for a solid brunch with interesting takes on standards (Johnny Benedict is eggs Benedict
with a southern twist) that are well-prepared, good cocktails and good service, here it is.
Great place to people watch! The food was pretty good however the French Toast may be made out of a banana batter because the bread was soggy and a bit under done.
The host sat us between the bar and the open window/wall. It was extremely loud with many gregarious happy hour patrons. I had a hard time hearing my date over the very loud drunks.
The waitress seemed annoyed that she had to serve us and very rarely checked in or stopped by. The Penn Quarter location is much nicer, quieter, friendlier.
Service was uncharacteristically slow on this visit; however food and drinks were great as usual.
Our waiter Troy was the best! Brunch was delicious and the drinks were amazing!
Friendly and helpful.
Always love the Smith. NYC or DC - the consistency is fantastic. We split the watermelon salad and the truffle gnocchi - and they were delicious. Need a guaranteed good meal to hit the spot, go to the Smith.
Average. Nothing special.
Food was delicious. Servers were polite and checked in throughout most of the meal. They forgot about our appetizers, however, which came out after our entrees. Overall a very nice time.
The acting manager. I think Devon? was so so lovely and made us feel welcome. Will definitely keep returning. I think I am now a "regular"
The food was amazing!!! I couldn’t put it down! And the staff was very attentive checking in on us and refilling our water very consistently. So happy with my experience!
It was good but average. Salmon tartare is not meant to be served on chopped potato pancake...tasty, but small appetizer. The mashed potatoes are great but the burger’s topping coleslaw was vinegary in flavour and really, guys, toast the bun! It was dry. Not worth the money. Though, the table next to me recommended the gnocchi...
One of my favorite places for cocktails!
i still appreciate the brunch at the smith - idk if they recently hired new staff or old staff needs to be re-trained but i will say i’ve noticed my service has gotten worse every time i go back but the brunch is great and so are the drinks
Great for brunch! Received a free drink with our brunch order. Food was very good.
Everything was delicious and service was attentive without being intrusive or bothersome.
Waited 30 minutes past our reservation time.
Would not recommend. It was extremely noisy, our server took forever for everything and the food was mediocre at best.
We ordered the crab cake tots, 5 dozen oysters, chicken wings, calamari and the mac and cheese! The food was perfectly cooked and every item was delicious. The service, however, lacked big time. We were at the restaurant for almost 2 hours and our waitress checked on us only a few times. We waited a long time after we were finished with our food for someone to even offer us dessert.. Our table was left uncleaned between meals and by the end of the night, our table was covered in dirty plates and serving dishes that were never cleared off of the table.. The restaurant wasn't even busy so I find it hard to justify the slow and careless service.
Food is great at this location. I believe the server was new to the role and didn’t know much about he menu.
I've been to The Smith several time. The food is always delicious, the service is impeccable and the ambiance is lively. I recommend this restaurant whole heatedly!
Unfortunately two burgers were incorrectly made according to the menu—a disappointment and no helpful response from staff. Food was just not as top notch as we anticipated.
Our experience at the Smith was wonderful. The restaurant manager made sure our anniversary was special by sending two glasses of champagne to our table and congratulating us on another year of being together. The waitress also said congratulations too Really appreciate them paying attention to the note I included in our OpenTable reservation.
The food was excellent and was more than plenty. The interior of the restaurant is nicely decorated and clean. Highly recommend visiting the Smith.
So happy I came across this place. The food was so good and the atmosphere was even better.
We decided to try The Smith for Sunday brunch after walking past the place several hundred times. (We live less than two blocks away.) On the one hand, we weren't disappointed. Service was prompt, efficient, and courteous, and the food was well-prepared, if not exemplary. My catfish sandwich was satisfying, but the principal flavors I detected were those of the very good brioche bun and bacon, with the fish playing no more than a supporting role. The portion of french fries that came with the sandwich were about 50 percent larger than I needed or expected, but I ate them all anyhow -- definitely the highlight of the meal. On the other hand, my spouse's grits were way too heavy on the cheddar cheese; both of us found the flavor distracting and this dish went unfinished.
On the other hand, the reason we did not visit the place right away was also evident: the noise. Hard floors, uncovered tables, tiled walls, and a pressed ceiling look stylish (and also look like the other Smith locations I have passed by in DC, New York, and Chicago) but all serve to bounce sound. The din in the restaurant, which was not quite full when we departed, was quite impressive in the wrong way.
I would definitely recommend The Smith - U Street. The food was amazing and the drinks were great!
Delicious food, great environment, wide variety of options. Definitely recommend.
Great service, delicious food!
