The Smith - U Street
The food was absolutely amazing!
The noise levels are way above normal. The table I had requested weeks in advance was not reserved for my party. The Smith establishment should consider installing noise absorbing materials. Service and food is consistently good.
I took my boyfriend here for his birthday - it was PERFECT. The manager was wonderful and personally brought out his birthday dessert for him and everyone was very kind.
Our table for a party of 8 for brunch was ready when promised. Service was great and punctual, and our server checked on us several times during the meal, filling waters and coffees when low. Food was mostly excellent (French toast was the only item not given 5 stars). Brunch included a free cocktail so final cost was very reasonable.
Server was friendly and food was good. Restaurant was a bit loud but not unbearable.
Food was great. We had the steak and the spicy salmon tartare. Drink menu is nicely done as well. The ambiance is really cool as well.
Very cute interior with good food options. The tomato soup was delicious with a good variety of oysters. Service was a bit slow as we were trying to make it across the street for a show at Lincoln Theater. Still very convenient and I would return with more time!
Excellent food. Restaurant got crowded quickly for brunch, and they pack the tables in very tightly making it hard to get around. Service was a little slow, but the food was absolutely delicious. All four of us loved our meals.
Great ambience and good food however our table had to wait a long time to order food only to learn about 45 minutes after we ordered that they had ran out of hamburgers which my girlfriend had ordered. We needed to then reorder which added on even more time so all in all it was well over an hour before we got our food. The drinks also took a long time to get to our table. The other issue was the bathroom. Only two of their four bathrooms were in working order so the line was very long. Also one of the two bathrooms in use didn't have any towels and the other one apparently didn't even have working lights. The steak that my girlfriend and I both got was good but it was too little too late. Server and host were kind (comped my girlfriend's meal) but the logistics of this restaurant are very bad and ultimately ruined the experience.
Great food, great atmosphere. It is loud, but intentionally so. Loved the shishito peppers and mac n cheese. Butternut squash was great as well. We were there for dinner for a bachelorette party and they gave the bride some champagne which was sweet! We also left the a credit card on the table and they used Open table to track down my number and call me so we could come get it. We'd barely even left the restaurant. Top notch service!!
I've been to The Smith in several occasions. I'm unsure what happened this one evening. My friend and I had to seek out our waitress to get her attention, although she provided excellent service to the tables around us. Our food was cold. And, the lack of service made it challenging to return for an entree made properly. Frustrating evening.
The Smith has some great brunch options! The food was really good but the service was kinda slow. We also did not get our drinks until after we got our food. The appetizer we got was also late and not very hot. I think it was just too busy, so would recommend going at an earlier time than 1:30pm on a Saturday.
It was so loud in the restaurant. You practically had to yell across the table to hear anyone
They ran out of a lot of stuff by the time we got there, but it was still good.
Are at bar. Brad was great! A little noisy. Good food!
Excellent food, service and vibe. Seated promptly on a busy Friday night. Had a 7pm res for an 8:30 show at the Lincoln. Got to show by 8:20. Calamari was FANTASTIC - best we ever had anywhere in the world (and we've had it in several place in Italy). The bucantini was delicious with a great pesto; catfish excellent and the Friday Scallop special w polenta was perfect. Brussel sprouts tasty too, as were the non-alcoholic drinks (ginger beer w cucumber; Shirley Temple!); service was friendly and accommodating. Great lively place, a bit noisy, but fine to talk. Could not be a better experience.
Food was great. Drink service was slow.
Service was great. Food was meh... everything had a beautiful presentation but taste was mediocre at best. We were visiting from another state and most likely wouldn’t be back on a return trip.
Brunch on Sunday. Food was excellent.
The Smith is a great addition to U Street. Their food is consistently good and the service is efficient without being intrusive. It can get a bit loud, but the "vibe" is part of its attraction.
Our entire experience left a lot to be desired, but the biggest offenses were: a long wait for food, missing items when our meal finally arrived, and portions of our meal that were inedible (just one example: the sauce with the short rib was so overwhelmingly salty). The menu is pretty pricey for us to have left feeling the way we did. Our group went to McDonald's afterward to get a complete meal.
Although the food was very good, there were lots of problems with the place. For starters, we only ordered entrees and it took close to an hour to get them. And when they came the vegetables on one of the entrees wasn’t there. We thought it strange that such a big dish would be used for such a relatively small piece of fish ... but it wasn’t until we’d finished the meal and saw others with the same dish eating their vegetables that we realized what had happened. Also, it is extremely noisy. Hard surfaces everywhere including the ceiling. It’s a shame to have such good cuisine combined with such poor and slow service in such noisy ambiance.
The Smith it a C+ restaurant. Everything is just "good." Not great, or excellent, just good. The food is fine, the drinks are ok, nothing special.
Complimentary cocktails are a great plus!!! Food was very salty, and didn't need it for flavor.
Ambience is nice early on in morning, but gets loud later.
We stayed for 1.5 hours and even though there was a lot of open room, they seemed nervous about their other reservations and seemed like they wanted us out soon.... :( Understandably...we were there for a tad longer than expected.
Really nice big space for small and large groups. Staff excellent. Food was great.
Fresh, beautifully-presented food. A healthy selection on the menu. Fast, efficient and friendly service. This is a solid neighborhood go-to.
Our server Kelly was great and the food was so good! Definitely will be back soon.
Consistent good service, good choices, good food, great ambiance.
Food was good and plentiful. Atmosphere noisy. Hard to talk and hear. Slow response to bathroom problem. Overall, good food.
Loud, very loud
The macaroni and cheese was the only thing that was delicious in our entire meal. We also had the shrimp cocktail that was tasteless. I think the shrimp was refrigerated for an extended time. The salmon was over cooked not to mention the portion was only 2 inches by 3 inches. The burger was ordered medium. It came raw It was actually cold. I will not return.
Fantastic meal. Tuna tartare and burrata are 100.
Great food. Very very noisy. Be prepared to yell to your guests. Excellent service.
We got nine friends together for an impromptu dinner and the Smith did a great job accommodating us all!
Great addition to the neighborhood. Catfish was done well. Nice ambiance, attentive service. Very good selection of wine by the glass.
My second time at The Smith and I continue to be impressed by the deliciousness of the food. This is not just your basic restaurant fare - it is legit scrumptious. Mac and cheese, crab tots, bolognese, pastrami spiced salmon, burger; all could be boring but were literally remarkably tasty and well-prepared with thoughtful touches and accompaniments. Yum!
Service was meh, got sorted right away but no server/water for the next 15mins. But food was tasty!
The food was great and the service was good. I'd highly recommend ordering the avocado toast. It was very delicious.
Ordered the Sicilian Baked Eggs and the eggs where over cooked which was disappointing, but everything is was good.
We came in for brunch and it did not disappoint. The Benedict Johnny was filling and delicious, with the tomato hollandaise was amazing. My husbands breakfast pot pie was just as good. Jose our server was on point. We liked it so much we spoke with the Manager and suggested they open another in Baltimore.
