The Smith – Penn Quarter, Washington, D.C

The food was good, although a little pricey. We were thankful to be seated immediately on a busy Friday night. I had the lobster roll and was a little disappointed that it was made with onions and tomatoes, as my previous lobster rolls had not. All in all it was a nice experience but I wish I'd ordered something different. My husband enjoyed his steak and salad.
So disappointed with The Smith on 8/13. We were a group of 10 for breakfast at 0900. There were at best 3 other tables, so not crowded, not busy. Our table was finished eating before 1 of our group even got their food (and it was avocado toast, but a big lift.) Food was lackluster, bacon was hard as a rock. Eggs Benedict was hard boiled - not prepared correctly. Biscuits were great. Fruit bowl was good. This shouldn't have happened with an empty restaurant- we should have had too service and it was bad, really bad.
Not the best place if you're trying to have a conversation, it's popular, and noisy. I'm not certain what the specialty of The Smith is exactly.
Visited during Restaurant week. Watermelon salad was okay. Cavatelli was delicious with the crunchy breadcrumbs. Dessert (peaches and creen) was amazing. Great wine selection.
Not good for conversation if sitting inside; it is very energetic. We sat outside and people watched instead.
Centrally located with great food and fabulous service.
Don't go here if you want to have a conversation at your table without yelling. Very noisy place. Food was good but nothing I would go out of my way for. Went for Restaurant week and had the Chicken Paillard which was rubbery. Rest of the meal was good.
The Smith is always a favorite. The food and service are always great. Their mac and cheese is the best!
Extremely noisy, food was just average and service was so slow....There are many better choices available in DC for lunch
Great food, service and evening, but the noise level in the restaurant made it very difficult to hear/have conversations.
Good food; good service but for some reason it is always extremely noisy/loud.
Love the food, service can be hit or miss, but food might be a bit overpriced given the quality and value. Love the restaurant itself -- great vibe and decor.
The service was extremely slow even though the restaurant wasn't full. I would've liked to have ordered few more drinks but I couldn't because I didn't want to stay another hour. I wasn't sure who the server was towards the end because different people brought us checks and swiped our cards.
Great service but food was below par, especially for the price. Good quantity, however.
I went to The Smith to celebrate my birthday last night with the parents. Everything from the greet from the hostess crew to our waitress to our food was amazing. My dad ordered the pork chop and my mom and I ordered the ribeye; all cooked to perfection. The icing on the cake was the hot fudge sundae, the chocolate almond dipped cone omg!! So good! Will definitely be going back to this restaurant!! They really have nailed everything!!!
We had great service, but the restaurant was so very loud we decided to sit outside. Food was good but not great. We had chicken which was dry, pastas were fine but nothing amazing. Ordered the wings and they were very spicy. For the price there are too many other great restaurants-
Great spot for a business dinner. Location was noisy, but service was top notch!
After having many great experiences at the DC U Street location, I thought this Penn Quarter location would be just as nice. Not so. All aspects were mediocre, and fell far below the level set by U Street. The restaurant was grungy, the food was very mediocre, and one had to search for the server multiple times. The runner’s fingernails were filthy, and the space was excruciatingly LOUD!!! I couldn’t understand half of what was said at my table.
I’ll stick with U Street.
The Smith is reliably good, with lots of options. We enjoyed our lunch/brunch today.
The ambiance and drinks in the restaurant never disappoint! We loved the Mac and Cheese so much the last time we ordered it again! Fell in love with it all over again.
Couldn’t wait to try the food!!!!
Great time at the bar, make sure you join Olivia! Great bartender!
Great restaurant. Prices were fair for the area, but portions could be a bit bigger for the price. Other restaurant charge the same for larger dishes, with the same quality of food.
Would recommend and will probably be back again.
The Smith is a typical brunch date with my husband and I. We love the ambience, the hospitality, the service and the food. I’ve recommended The Smith to friends and family.
The Smith looks appealing, but it is so loud it’s hard to hear the people in your party. The food is pretty good, it is not outstanding and it is pricy.
We visited on a weekday for breakfast. There was no one in the restaurant, but the food was very good and reasonably priced.
Although we had a reservation for 12:30, the restaurant was completely packed and we had to wait about 20 min for our table, so this place is not a good lunch option if you need to go back to work afterwards, as I did. Our server was fantastic and he answered all of our menu questions and made great recommendations. We enjoyed the crab cake tots a great deal, as well as the macaroni & cheese! The lobster had good flavor, but had more of a wet consistency that I associate with shrimp salad. The portions were very generous. Partway through our meal our server disappeared, never to be seen again. Perhaps his shift ended? No one seemed to be assigned to our table after that. We flagged down a random employee and asked for our check.
The service was subpar and the food was adequate and fairly priced. Server stopped by twice in 90 minutes, never received refills of drinks and had to flag down a manager to pay our bill so we could get to our show on time. The food was fine but overall I can't say I was floored by the experience and wouldn't go out of my way to go back.
I read the reviews before I went there and was a little concerned about the service. We had no issue what so ever and had very good service. No issues at all. The previous reviews also talked about the noise level and they were right. When the restaurant was full, it got very loud. One could call it energetic, I call it loud. The food was excellant. The steak was delicious and cooked perfectly. I wouldn't say the portions were over the top but there was plenty. The prices weren't cheap but not outrageous either. We chose this restaurant because of its proximity to the Capital One arena. It was very convenient and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good restaurant in DC.
Excellent service and the food also was excellent
The staff were friendly and attentive
Lovely restaurant in a great location. Staff was friendly and professional. We were there for breakfast and I found the offerings were ok. A little more diversity on the menu would have been good. I asked about an omelet which they do not serve. So I opted for the pancakes with a side order of chicken sausage. The pancakes were delicious but I wish there was a half order option. They were expensive at $14 and because they were so filling, I only ate half. The chicken sausage was tasty but again the portion size was pretty large so I didn't finish it all. But I took it to go and it was even better re-heated. I was a little annoyed because all my food did not come out at the same time. But the waiter apologized. All and all, it was a decent meal and I am willing to dine there again. Maybe for lunch.
Food was outstanding. The service was very good. Unfortunately the Bloody Mary tasted like cocktail sauce with vodka. Probably the worst Bloody Mary I have ever had. If you don’t like cocktail sauce, you will not like their Bloody Marys.
Ended up leaving after 15 minutes when nobody came to wait on our table. We had a 10:00 reservation, only 2 tables there before us. It was like we were invisible. Very disappointing.
Loved our waiter, very knowledgeable when I came down to the menu. Also loved that he saw I wasn’t sure which beer I wanted, and suggested I sample it before getting a full glass. The food was excellent! As an appetizer, we had Mac and Cheese and it was perfect. For my entree, I had the NY strip and mashed potatoes and it was perfect. My friend had the spicy fried chicken and loved it. Definitely looking forward to coming back.
The food is great! The service, eh not so much. It took us 15 minutes to wave down our server for the check after we had finished eating. The food runners were wonderful though.
My wife and I walked in for dinner because it looked really nice from the outside and website, which it is. I don't know if if was just bad luck, but both of our meals were underwhelming. The Lobster Roll was terrible with finely diced lobster and tons of mayo. The menu said a whole lobster but I couldn't even make out what was lobster and what was diced red onion. The brioche roll was all dried out and crumbly, completely opposite of what a brioche roll should be. My wife had bolognese which was okay, however they went extremely heavy on the fennel and took away from all the other flavors. So overall, based on my one experience here, I wouldn't return. And PLEASE take the Lobster Roll off the menu as it's a disservice to any customer who has had a lobster roll before.
Food was delicious! Service by Aasa was exceptional! We will definitely return!
Had an incredible dinner at The Smith last night! We had a large party of 7 and they were incredibly accommodating and set us up with a beautiful table. Our server was delightful and the food was great. I order the mussels which were some of the most flavorful I’ve ever had. The ice cream sundae, peaches and cream, and rice pudding desserts topped off our night! Will definitely be back.
One might expect a restaurant in Penn Q to feel "touristy" but as locals we had an amazing time bringing our parents here when they visited. Mekkah took phenomenal care of us. He was attentive, but not intrusive. He was relaxed and playful, which is always great for my family...we like Food was perfect, and even though we were stuffed he brought us cookies on the house. My parents raved about it for the next few hours.
This place is in a good location, attractive, good service and good food. But nothing really special. Drinks are small and pricey, and wine is served in a small tumbler- odd. So if you are looking for a reliable but somewhat generic place, I would recommend it. But definitely not a go- to for foodies.
Good vibe good food decent wine
