The atmosphere was great. We loved the decor and holiday decorations that were put up for the holidays. The service was not very good. It was difficult to get drink refills from our waitress; we ended up asking the busboy several times. Our entrees were ok; loved the oysters though! Overall, just an ok dinner.
We truly enjoyed our experience at The Smith. The food was delicious especially the Birthday Cake dessert! We will be back soon for brunch!
Very nice casual dining in River North. We enjoyed sitting in a booth. The food was good. I had a Smith Burger that was excellent. The service was just ok. It took forever to get drink refills, and after a while our server just disappeared. They were very nice and let us hang out at our table for about 30 minutes after our dinner while we waited for a train.
They were 25 minutes late to seat us. It wasn’t until I reminded them that we had a reservation that they made a table available and moved us to the top of the list.
Waiter took two of our drink orders and left without getting the third. He forgot a cocktail (never received even after reminding him).
A really pretty space but will not be returning.
First time at the Smith and will be back! Met a few friend there for brunch and we all had a great time! The wait staff were very attentive and the food was delish!
The food was excellent and the atmosphere was just what we were looking for. We were celebrating a birthday and they gave us a birthday treat that we weren't expecting!
This is the second visit to The Smith. The food is great, the issue I have incurred twice is the slow service. The first time we went was for brunch and they were packed, so we were more than understanding that the service was a bit slow...But we decided to try again at 3.45 on a Saturday. The restaurant was basically empty and we were delighted for the first 15 minutes of our meal, but then the service went by the wayside. Our waitress had 2 tables (from what we could tell) and after our drinks came out and our order was taken she didn't come back to the table for 35-40 minutes. We did see her on the floor, but she never came back to the table. We flagged a very nice waiter and he boxed our leftovers and we ordered dessert. The chicken sandwich was one of the best I have ever had, so it's frustrating to want to go to a restaurant with excellent food but not get great service.
We made a reservation at 1 pm and were not sat until 1:40 pm. I saw our table sit open, but they refused to seat us even though we had all members of our party. Once we got to the table, the server didn't approach us for another 10 minutes and didn't bring drinks for another 10 minutes later. After we ordered, and waited for 10 or so minutes, someone from the wait staff came over and told us they were "out of turkey sandwiches" that two people in my group had ordered. There was no apology for the wait, running out of food & no thank you as we left the table. The food was not good either. Some was cold, and some was just down right not appetizing. I was extremely disappointed in my experience & will not be going back.
Great food and drinks
Food and atmosphere were outstanding!
The hostess seated us a spot where there wasn’t enough room between the servers station and our party. The calamari appetizer was mainly made of zucchini and was poorly made. Overall, very disappointed.
Disappointed in the food this time. Usually very tasty but this time me u was limited and food was bland
The food and service were both fantastic. The noise level, however, was intolerable. This was by far the noisiest place I have ever been to. I could not hear our people at our own table talking. If you want good quality food, then this would be fine. But if you want to go somewhere to be social and have a discussion, go somewhere else.
Terrible service very slow bathrooms out of toilet paper 45minutes after notifying manager. Drilling and hanging decorations while open. Food was warm not hot. Was recommended but unfortunately would not repeat the recommendation. Very disappointing
Great value on brunch cocktails. Sicilian eggs served with bread was super flavorful and filling. Chilled shrimp had very small pieces of the deveining pieces attached but nice flavor overall. The fries arrived a little soggy. Overall, nice location, great ambience, great service!
Good food. Small portion sizes. Definitely still hungry
Family of five. Great place for brunch!
We came here for thanksgiving and it was great. They had a prix fixe menu for the holiday. First time here and the place has a cool vibe to it. The food and service was great! Would definitely come back
While it was Thanksgiving and extremely packed, The Smith is usually a really great restaurant. They seemed to be way too busy and understaffed to have a successful dinner service. My server came around every so often and took forever to bring us water and drinks. The food came out cold for both the appetizer and entree courses.
I will be back because I love The Smith restaurants in NYC and I know that it was most likely a perfect storm of bad events that lead to such a poor experience.
Thanksgiving dinner was amazing
Four of us went to The Smith for Thanksgiving dinner, and we were all very happy with the meal and experience. There was a Prix Fixe menu for the evening containing some really great options for people who like traditional Thanksgiving food and for others who wanted something different. The drinks and service were very good. The only downside was that we had to wait for 30 mins after our reservation time for a table, but once we were seated, the service was prompt and we never felt rushed. I'll definitely be back!
The restuarant is absolutely gorgeous! We loved the ambience and the holiday buzz as we dined on Thanksgiving evening. The cocktails we ordered were tasty and inventive, and our dinner from the special Thanksgiving menu was divine. We especially loved the photo booth downstairs! Definitely recommend this for a date night or a special family gathering.
Our dinner from the special Thanksgiving menu was excelent. There was a Prix Fixe menu for the evening containing some really great options for everyone, Would definitely come back!!!
The overall experience was okay, not enough to make me want to go back to be honest. The food was okay, our waiter was outstanding and the drinks were stiff (good thing) but I made a reservation in advance and we still had to wait a while before being seated , and I had to go up to the host table for them to finally have a table ready for us. Overall it was okay, better for drinks, would not go back for food.
The food was great, but it took forever to get our food.
I knew I was in for a treat when I received a call from The Smith a week prior to my reservation. The person calling was so friendly, I knew good things were to come. I was there for Thanksgiving Dinner and nothing was a disappointment. The food, service, and ambiance were all first class. A must visit if you're in River North.
Without question the BEST Thanksgiving dinner I have had. Food was exceptional, beyond plentiful and great value. I took home enough for dinner the following day. I was hesitant booking a prix fixe menu dinner but it made me a believer. First time here but everyone in group agreed we will come back soon! Happy Thanksgiving!
I'm sorry to send in such a bad report. The staff is very kind, but the noise level is over the top. Our waiter told us that he has trouble hearing after each shift. But the worst of all is the food, which is flavorless and poorly thought out. We did enjoy the bread that came with the burrata appetizer. But the rest of it, turkey pot pie with a cheese crust (no pastry that we could identify), side dishes, were poorly textured with little seasoning. The chocolate cake dessert (which we took home) is nice, though.
We went for Thanksgiving dinner and were very pleased. Food was delicious, cocktails well-balanced, service friendly and well-timed. We sat in the back and ambience was good, tho we noted it seemed louder as we passed through the front/main dining room. The bar downstairs looks like a good late-night option; we’ll try that sometime.
20 minutes before server came to table. No food until 50 minutes after that. Too long to get check. Took desserts to go. Floor managers need to monitor server timing of first contact and courses served. Same issue at The Smith in midtown NYC. Bus staff lacked direction. This is a structural management problem. Apple tart outstandig.
We usually spend thanksgiving in NYC and have dinner at The Smith in Nomad the last few years. So when The Smith came to Chicago we were excited to have Thanksgiving dinner started home. We loved that it was the same menu and the food was really good. Great service and we even got champagne from the manager at the end of the night
Amazing thanksgiving dinner!!
It was a great place to have Thanksgiving away from home. The food was delicious, the portions more than sufficient and the service excellent. Cameron was our server. Emily, I presume she is a manager, made us feel very welcome and at home. Even helped us with our wine selection. She kept checking on us to ensure everything was going well.
Absolutely fantastic service!
Great food. Family friendly, yet still refined. Staff was incredible. Would highly recommend.
The food was excellent. Thanksgiving menu was selected well to reflect traditions, with some non traditional options for picky eaters. The gnocchi were phenomenal.
Our service from Oscar was incredible. He gave us plenty of space to enjoy our holiday meal, but was involved in making sure we had a perfect experience. The menu was easy to navigate and the prices were very reasonable. We couldn’t be happier about spending Thanksgiving at The Smith. 5 star food and staff!
So much noise in the place. Had to move to a different table and the place was still very loud. Won’t return.
Exceeded our expectations- will definitely go back Oscar was an incredible waiter. Recommendations were spot on for brunch - Johnny cake Benedict was done perfectly, as was the brioche BLTE. Need to come back for Ranchero eggs, cod Milanese, turkey sandwich, etc. Also, wonderful brunch cocktails. Cannot say enough great things- just need to go and see for yourself
Overall, the experience was good. The service was great, the oysters and duck wings were great. The steaks, sides and salads, were just ok, good not great.
