The Smack Shack
Although named for the boats used to catch lobster, Smack Shack was launched as a food truck in 2010 serving lobster rolls from a land-locked downtown Minneapolis parking lot. Owner Josh Thoma had a great recipe and a belief that appetite for fresh lobster in the Twin Cities was as strong as any coastal city.
Smack Shack is committed to serving sustainable seafood and is a current partner in the Minnesota Zoo’s Fish Smart program. Sustainable seafood is wild caught or farm raised seafood that has established practices to ensure the long term growth and thriving populations of seafood with limited harm to the environment.

Our server was so amazing and so was the food!
I was very impressed with the COVID precautions and felt very safe. The food and service were as great as always!
Food was incredible, Server was the best I've ever had! His name was Nick. He was amazing! Love this place! They were also flexible when we were running late for our reservation. Drinks are amazing as well! Can't recommend enough.
We went for lunch and the food and service were excellent.
Great value for restaurant week. Food was fresh and delicious with big chunks of lobster.
Had a good view of staff from upper level. Thank you for using hand sanitizer regularly - we noticed! Great social distancing.
I had not been to the Smack Shack prior, ordered the Original Lobster Roll, it was divine! Lots of lobster, the bread was toasted perfectly, highly recommend. My friend ordered the lobster mac'n'cheese and hers was amazing! Staff was super friendly and on top of everything, from refills of water and soda, not pushy, but there when you needed them. Spacing was nice, for as open as the place is, it wasn't overwhelmingly loud.
Always a great experience and amazing food. Service was just average this night, normally it is awesome
I’ve been eating at the Smack Shack for years. The last few times I’ve been I’ve been extremely disappointed. It was freezing cold in there, air coming through the glass window. I asked for ranch and wasn’t told there was bacon in the ranch. I can’t eat pork. The reisling that I ordered tasted extremely flat and nothing like a reisling, the lobster Mac was absolutely to rich it appears to be touch much cream idk. The jambalaya was chicken soup with sausage and shrimp extremely runny and not the consistency of jambalaya at all watered down. I hope you guys get it right.
Great food and service! Really enjoyed our brunch here
Went around lunch time. The food and service were meh. Lobster roll was underwhelming. Clam chowder was actually pretty good. Lobster bisque was RIIIIICH. Server didn’t seem like he wanted to be there (but it’s a Pandemic, give servers a break and tip better than you normally would, ya know?) Pretty overpriced but that’s COVID for ya- web menu and real-time menu didn’t match in prices. Reservation was honored about 10m late.
Fried green tomatoes appetizer, corn bread, and Connecticut-style lobster roll were especially good!
There was an article in local paper saying Smack Shack was a warm outdoor dining situation. Plenty of heaters. It was cold and our heater was not emitting much heat. We asked 4 different times if it was working. Did it need propane. Always told no it was fine even though the was clearly no heat. Finally just before we got our check the tank was changed and lo and behold, heat! Truly disappointing, even unacceptable. Shame on Smack Shack and shame on Star Tribune. Still shivering!
Lovely outdoor dining with attentive staff, great lobster guacamole and beautiful shrimp’. Always reminds me of my trips to the Gulf Coast.
Had a very enjoyable dinner in the outdoor seating area on a cool fall evening. The heaters kept us toasty. The service was great - friendly, attentive, accommodating. Celebrating a 19 year olds birthday, somehow Lobster Poutine was ordered. It wouldn’t have been something I would have ordered, but glad we did - it was delicious. The table also enjoyed a really good Mac and Cheese, Scallops, Clam Chowder and roasted blue cheese potatoes. We left with happy, and with leftovers.
We normally love the Smack Shack but this particular night was not as nice. Service was lacking, our server provided the bare minimum. The food was bland and didn't taste good - lobster was undercooked. There were customers obviously intoxicated and shouting and staff were not addressing this issue.
The food was EXCELLENT! Many great entrée/food options to choose from and their cocktail menu was great too. My husband appreciated the variety on the beers on tap list. I have Celiac disease so I'm not able to eat gluten, the staff was very considerate and made sure to keep breads on the side of shared dishes so that they aren't contaminating the dish, while my husband can enjoy the carbs!
We'll definitely be back!
The service was great! Our server went above and beyond and was VERY knowledgeable. Our food was ready in no time at all. I would highly recommend smack shack to any seafood lover! The cheese cake was to die for.
The reservations are irrelevant. You will arrive and there will still be up to an hour wait for the seating you originally requested. I got put up in the upstairs close to people with little to no covid precaution. It was incredibly dissatisfying.
My bestie and I had a great time.
Love the smack shack it was wonderful and safe. And making reservations was soooo easy
Delicious lunch! We had the Lobster Rolls and they were amazing! We got to sit outside on a beautiful day. Our waitress was very friendly! We will definitely be back.
Fantastic lobster roll. Very fresh for the mid-west. Will be back for more.
The drinks were way overpriced. Nice and attentive staff, but not really worth the price.
I would recommend that the Alaska king crab legs are atleast cracked open prior to serving. My the time I opened my legs they were cold. It was cold in the restaurant.
The Smack Shack is our favorite place to eat in the North Loop. Great atmosphere, friendly service and consistently great food.
I got in right away with my reservation. Tables are distanced for safety during the pandemic. Food was delicious and hit the table within 30 min of ordering. Loud and casual dining experience.
We had a lovely evening! Great food of course and our waiter was fantastic! Thanks for a great night. Also felt very safe eating indoors.
I had family from Chicago, and the service was typical class A! ( North Loop style). They loved it, i have always loved it.
The space is great, hope it can survive the stress of Covid but definitely plenty of spacing to be safe. Food selection is excellent, something for anyone and for us hard to make just one choice as there are so many creative dishes. Service is great, friendly and attentive to the table and prompt with food and drinks. Food is well seasoned, has excellent balance of flavors. My only two cents would be, in my case, extra bread with the bouillabaisse as the broth is amazing but you need a couple breadsticks to soak it all up. All around, of our favorite places and will go back again many times.
I got the Jambalaya without shrimp (shellfish allergy). It was a bit salty which overpowered the rest of the flavors, but still fairly good.
Great as usual even in this Covid time. They do a great job with keeping everyone safe.
Their whole menu is always amazing, but the peel and eat shrimp is the ultimate meal starter. We have been enjoying Smack Shack since they were lunch trucks only, and they still continue that great food through today!
Difficult to pass up the Connecticut lobster roll but tonight’s halibut bowl was a tasty healthy alternative. This is not fine dining but food is very good and atmosphere is lively.
Every one of us loved our meals. My scallops were the best I have every had. My daughter had the Bouillabaisse and was thrilled with it. My husband has a seafood allergy, and so he always gets a burger. This was no ordinary burger. Our drinks were outstanding, as was our service. Can't wait to go back!
Despite initial concerns about being in public space during COVID, they did a good job at wearing masks, respecting social distancing, overall service, and making me feel comfortable.
Waiter helped put a combo dish together. Awesome
Food was great. Server was great. Wish they would add the Lobster Cobb Salad to the dinner menu also - need a lobster dinner salad.
Such a treat to eat the wonderful lobster rolls sitting outside in the sun. I was fantasizing about the lobster roll and it fulfilled my dream! Great service; we were very grateful the Smack Shack was open for lunch on a beautiful fall day.
