The Smack Shack
Although named for the boats used to catch lobster, Smack Shack was launched as a food truck in 2010 serving lobster rolls from a land-locked downtown Minneapolis parking lot. Owner Josh Thoma had a great recipe and a belief that appetite for fresh lobster in the Twin Cities was as strong as any coastal city.
Smack Shack is committed to serving sustainable seafood and is a current partner in the Minnesota Zoo’s Fish Smart program. Sustainable seafood is wild caught or farm raised seafood that has established practices to ensure the long term growth and thriving populations of seafood with limited harm to the environment.

Overall the food was very tasty. One order though did not seem to match the description on the menu. The place was VERY load, it was nearly impossible to have a conversation at our table.
Haven't been the Shack since the pandemic hit. Was good to be back. Food was good, though the menu was a bit different from the one on the web site. All food was delivered piping hot, which was great. Our server, Chele, was amazing. Great energy, quick with recommendations, very observant (one of the dishes came out without bacon bits, which she promptly corrected), attentive, without hovering, and always listening.
Server was great! Took long time for food to come though.
Great experience! Our group of 4 enjoyed it immensely. None of us had been there before. I'm sure we'll be back.
First time. Not disappointed. Food as good as we expected
We sat on the patio outside in the shade and had a great time. Staff were great and the food was delicious.
Food was kinda of bland I had the shrimp boil.
Outdoor seating was very nice but a little loud with some cars racing on Washington Avenue. Food usually very good, but this time the lobster in the Connecticut roll was overcooked.
Excellent seafood and fun atmosphere. Got the peel and eat shrimp, which was a great size for two. Loved the Po' Boy sandwich. Will definitely be back.
We thought the food was amazing! And the specialty drinks were so good too. It was a spendy bill but worth it for the occasion we were there for. We’ll go back!
Expensive but worth the splurge! Loved my experience
We were celebrating my birthday and our server Nick was incredible. The food as always was mouthwatering!!! We will be back for sure!
The service and food was awesome as always. Never a bad experience ever when I’ve been here. Glad you made through the pandemic.
When we asked a question about our meal once it arrived, our waitress immediately became defensive and rude, “that’s what you ordered”. We weren’t asking for a refund, or a anything to be changed, just a question. We had misread the menu destination and that’s on us.
Really great environment and the service was first class. The food is really good (not spectacular - but really good) and we will definitely go back. The peel and eat shrimp and 2 lbs lobster were standouts; each was excellent. The bouillabaisse was more average, and the sides were hit and miss. We stayed for desert and were glad we did - the key lime pie is amazing and the flourless chocolate and ice cream was a hit. All in all, a really enjoyable evening.
Service was slow and borderline in attentive
Great service, definitely something I could only do a few times a year but I loved it.
Great food, knowledgable staff. Love this restaurant.
I absolutely love this place. My husband and I had our first date at Smack Shack we come once a month because we love it so much
We sat in the patio and had a wonderful lunch (lobster Cobb salad and spring peas with scallops) with fantastic friendly service from Angie!
The hostess was very organized, engaging and accommodating. Our waiter was as well.
I appreciated the choice to eat inside or outside. It was still surprisingly loud on the patio.
Three of our entrees were as expected. The fish and chips choice was crispy on the outside, and doughy on the inside. The pieces smelled like old/not fresh oil.
The lobster roll was good, but I got the impression flavored oil was used instead of butter.
Really awesome food. We were in town from SF- I am a Minne native, my partner is from SF. Food was outstanding! Trisha our waitress was amazing! We sat outdoors. It was a covered awning with heating from above. A sultry perfect. It was even raining and we did not get wet and were not bothered at all.
We had the passion fruit and tequila drink - so amazing
Shrimp po boy
Friend chicken meal
EVERYTHING WAS SOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!
Thanks for making our date night great!
Great food! We had the seafood boil with crab legs and peel and eat shrimp and the fried green tomato appetizers. Everything was absolutely delicious and our group really enjoyed the evening.
Great to sit on the covered patio out of the sun. Fresh air and good food. A lunch choice for sure
Excellent Connecticut warm lobster roll and fries. Good variety of drinks. Service is consistently very good. Fun to sit on the large patio.
We love Smack Shack! We come here everytime I’m here for work...gotta play a lil too!
I got my libster roll "fix"! So delicious.
I feel it was too cold to have the big doors open. Both me and my dinner companion were cold. However, I understand that is a matter of perspective. Food and service were outstanding.
Love the vibes! The food is amazing! I highly recommend!
We don’t go into the city very often for dinning. Parking is a significant challenge in this area. Food and service was good, but expect loud inner city traffic noise. Oh, and I don’t much like being told to pay mandated compensation. In the end these items validate the reason we don’t come into the city for dining
We absolutely love Smack Shack! Our server was very knowledgeable about different menu items and made us feel well taken care of. The food was amazing as always, but the service was memorable.
Best lobster roll in the state, perfect amount of melted butter, very good bread. Seasoned fries are the best. Love sitting on the porch! Such a fun place. Classic motown music playing, perfectly enjoyable evening. Can wait to go back.
Wonderful experience, food and fellowship!
The Connecticut sammie , the lobster was over cooked. Overall good food!
Loved the food it was so good and the environment is lively and nice beautiful set up with outdoor dining I’ll be back
I was celebrating Mother’s Day. It was perfect.
Beware that if you make a 3 o’clock reservation at the Smack shack on Mother’s Day that their brunch menu ends at 3 PM and their dinner menu does not begin until 445. Very frustrating to discover this when we arrived there.
literally not much to choose from except a couple appetizers and sandwiches. This was not included anywhere when we made the reservation. We have always loved the smack shack but this has certainly soured our desire to return there
My experience on Mother's Day wasn't the experience I have had in the past at Smack Shack. We asked for a special order for our son. We weren't told they couldn't do it until they arrived at the table with our food. Very disappointed in how it was handled. Then when escalated to the manager, they were able to fulfill our non-complex request. Also, there was a shell in my sandwich.
Lobster roll is quite good, I chose Connecticut style but my friend chose the other. Both were great.
Thank you for a great experience! The food, drinks and service was impeccable! My guests and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner.
