Although named for the boats used to catch lobster, Smack Shack was launched as a food truck in 2010 serving lobster rolls from a land-locked downtown Minneapolis parking lot. Owner Josh Thoma had a great recipe and a belief that the appetite for fresh lobster in the Twin Cities was as strong as in any coastal city.

Smack Shack is committed to serving sustainable seafood and is a current partner in the Minnesota Zoo’s Fish Smart program. Sustainable seafood is wild-caught or farm-raised seafood that has established practices to ensure the long-term growth and thriving populations of seafood with limited harm to the environment.

    A good place to watch a game but if you’re more after a food experience, not the place for you. The food is average despite the higher price compared to nearby restaurants like Tavern 23 and the service was very slow, almost an hour for our food to come out despite not being busy at 1pm on a Sunday afternoon.

    I tried the spicy margarita and I was not disappointed! It was well crafted and delicious! The Happy Hour menu was excellent and I loved the mussels and crab cake-yummy! Every one found items on your menu that pleased them.

    Clam chowder was served warm - not hot - and was very starchy. Ordered eggs with andouille sausage and was served pork sausage. Add-on charge to bill for employee health care. Will not hurry to go back.

    The food was so good!! Loved the lobster guacamole, the paella, and the fish & chips. Not a huge fan of the lobster Mac, but that’s a preference based on the cheese used. The beignets were outstanding! A little expensive, but a good experience!

    I did not want Cajun fries with my sandwich. I asked the waitress if we could trade for something else to which she replied sure ; giving us a list of possibilities. We chose 1 each instead of Cajun fries. There was no mention of an extra charge. The bill came and we were charged $6 extra for each side. If I would have known I would be charged I wouldn’t have gotten the dishes. Also most sides I saw were $4-$5. Disappointing!

    Family of 5 ate at Bloomington location on a Sunday night. Not busy at all. From when we sat down to left was about 2 hours. Server was great but food coming from kitchen was slow. 2 of us loved lobster roll. 1 had state fair beignets, which tasted like a funnel cake. Was supposed to be lobster, bacon, corn & cheese curd. No curds in order we received. Jambalaya rice so spicy couldn’t eat but shrimp, sausage & chicken was very good. We came to celebrate a birthday and received a child chocolate cookie you can buy at a gas station. Disappointing desert.

    Pricey, but good food. Open space makes it hard to control noise. Not overly crowded on an early Sunday evening, so we didn't have an issue. On a Friday or Saturday night, it could be really loud. Patio looked nice, but we weren't certain about what the weather would be when we made the reservation. So, we opted to eat inside.

    I normally love Smack Shack, but this experience wasn't the same as previous visits. My meal was surprisingly off tasting (and I always order the same thing), like an old oil flavor. It caused me not to be able to even finish it because I couldn't get past the weird flavor. It was also disappointing that our card was charged for a different table that was more than double to total of our bill - which was a mistake made by the waitress. Luckily she fixed it AFTER charging our card and then needing to charge our card a second time for the correct total. It was unfortunate that the meal and the card issue happened because we did drive from out of town just for this meal to celebrate.

    This was our first visit and a birthday celebration. Menu was not huge, but had good variety. Everything we ordered had great flavor. Decor was minimal, but tasteful. Wait staff was attentive and checked in frequently. All round great time and meal. Will definitely be back.

    Food was amazing! Waitress was outstanding… unanimously agreed she was the best waitress we’ve ever had! We celebrated our daughter’s 16th birthday and they made it a great experience. King Crab boil and the Beignets are highly recommended!

    Super cute place. Nice patio seating. Great happy hour prices and generous pour on the wine which you don’t find very often. Food was really good as well. Would definitely go back.

    We had a lovely dinner at Smack Shack tonight! Crab cake appetizer was amazing! Lobster boil and Mahi Mahi were very good too. Way too much food but we will have some delicious leftovers, I’m thinking lobster pasta! We’ll be back again for sure.

    Service was great. The food tasted fantastic. I had the Tuna Poke which is where my only complaint comes in. There was too much juice so when you picked up the roll the juice ran onto your hand and the yam chips that came with it were not crunchy. They both tasted great but had those minor issues. The bowl of lobster bisque is the largest I've had anywhere and had great flavor. The key lime pie has a delicious crust - not to thick like some places and did not detract from the flavor of the filling. And if you really like lobster spring for extra lobster meat, it's worth it!

    Although I thought the food was a little on the expensive side, you definitely get what you pay for. My stuffed salmon was fabulous. The lobster roll couldn't have been better. When friends decided to join us for after dinner drinks and dessert, they were more than accommodating. Everything was just fabulous. The patio was a perfect spot on a warm summer day!

    I was lucky enough to catch happy hour this Friday. It was my first time ever visiting a Smack Shack and I am so thankful that I visited the Bloomington location! My waitress/bar keep was kind and attentive and the manager was buzzing around making sure to maintain the highest quality of food and service. Incredibly clean and well maintained restaurant. I was blown away about the lack of dust on high fixtures, walls, liquor bottles, televisions, and windowsills. The manager and staff at this location are killing it!! Even their subway tiles in the kitchen were spotless (no easy task!) I will absolutely be a loyal patron!

    Main dishes were good. However, we ordered the recommended Brussels sprouts and they wer over cooked. Tough and dry. Likewise the French fries were dry, l8ke they were the last of the batch The server was cordial, but hard to find

    My spouse and I went on a Saturday night. Moderately busy. We had the special app, lobster wontons with chili pepper sauce, split the 1 lb. peel-and-eat shrimp and fries. It was okay. Best item was the chili pepper sauce with fine bits of candied orange rind. Mostly cream cheese in the wontons.

    I loved this place. I'm already looking forward to the next time and it's been less than 24 hours. I had the jambalaya and it was fantastic. Service was top notch. Only complaint is the music was a a little loud but we were right by a speaker so it's probably just right everywhere else in the restaurant.

    Our waitress was exceptional. She was very friendly and efficient. It was my birthday celebration and she made me feel special. From the young man showing us to the table, to the waitress and the great food, it was a wonderful lunch to remember!

    So been here a lot and had phenomenal service each time. Last night was opposite. Waiter was unfriendly. Waited 20 minutes plus for the waiter to come back and take the credit card (wasn’t packed and he went by several times stopping by all around us. He looked at the table me ignored us. Ended up going up front today so we could leave. Ordered lobster rangoon - delicious. Sauce is spicy. I had lobster mac and cheese - also delicious. Friend ordered CT style lobster roll - subbed coleslaw for the fries. Lobster roll was great, but the slaw was not edible for her. Refills prior to food but waiter never asked after we had food. Typically great place. Was friend’s first time so disappointed not better experience. I will say manager was upfront and apologized for service. Hopefully just off night for server.
