The experience was made so much more pleasant by the amazing, friendly, smiley Australian lady that served us. She was fab and a great asset to your business.
Lovely looking pub with great ambience. The menu looked enticing but the food didn’t quite live up to our expectations. The children’s menu wasn’t very good value, we ordered the children’s pasta in tomato sauce which was very dry, and came served in a ramekin (therefore not easy to eat). Our child didn’t eat this as it didn’t have much flavour.
Our other children ordered the chips, nuggets, fish goujons and peas, which again all came served in ramekins. A plate would have been much easier.
We won’t eat there again
Limited menu (meat eater and vegetarian visiting). Server who had selective hearing couldn’t have cared less, brought incorrect drink, no milk arrived with English breakfast tea after the meal, saw other diners experiencing similar issues. Vegetarian burger and fries on a par with decent takeway food but was stacked and onion chutney smeared all over the bun. Bun fell apart when trying to eat, impossible to eat without becoming a sticky mess. £3.30 for a ‘pot’ of English tea that had enough water in it for one small cup of tea.
Lovely pub lunch after a walk. Vegan options were delicious.
Tasty roast dinner. Staff were very tentative and the pub has a nice atmosphere, although they ran out of Yorkshire puddings and only taking 50p off your pill when stuffing ball and cauliflower cheese is over £5.
Lovely place to spend time with the family. Service was excellent and friendly. Play area for children and nice walks nearby.
Great food and place. Our waiter was clearly having a bad day… actually came close to spoiling an otherwise wonderful meal. He was in contrast to the other somewhat younger staff
Established pub restaurant sitting at foot of South Downs. Sat outside on sunny day , minimal road noise passing traffic on village road. Good food and very helpful attentive staff. Would advise booking especially if you want to sit outside.
Exceptional food from short but interesting menu, mackerel starter with beetroot and horseradish was delicious. Lovely comfortable pub, very quiet on a Wednesday evening, staff friendly and very helpful. Highly recommended
Lovely late summer day, shame that pub garden was closed. Reserved outdoor table was right next to main entry door for social distancing comfort purposes.
I went with 3 veggie friends for the 4pm Sunday roast sitting. My veggie friends tried both veggie options and said they were delicious. I had the roast beef which was lovely also. Everything was done to perfection and the gravy was tasty and thick :)
Bit expensive but worth it - probably the best roast dinner going
Lovely food and lovely people - thanks so much for a nice afternoon
We had a fantastic Sunday Roast here. The food was great - I had the beef, my girlfriend had the Pork and our companions had Burgers. All were superb, and the sides were to die for. We also had three children with us ranging from 10 weeks to 4, and the staff catered for us brilliantly. It also helps that they have an expansive garden and super children's play area. Highly recommend
Welcoming, lively but not intrusive, friendly & relaxed. First class food & drink & amazingly attentive service. Recommended to us & will recommend to others .
Great pub, friendly attentive staff, tasty food and lovely atmosphere. It was our first visit and we will definitely be going back.!
Fantastic spot, amazing service and delicious food! Sadly ate so much that we didn’t have room for dessert so we’ll definitely be back! Thank you so much to the waiters and chefs!
Super dog-friendly pub with lovely, helpful staff and mouthwatering menu choices!
We both chose the beef shin which came with potatoes dauphinoise, hispi cabbage and a beetroot and horseradish jus. Just sublime! Wish we lived nearer!
As ever the friendliness of the Staff great, and service and quality of the food was excellent.
But usually the pub was very quiet for a Friday night, so our food was cooked and served even more quickly than usual.
Will be coming back again soon
Our waiter Cara was lovely, charming and efficient. Loved the corner table. Food was decent.
Perfect lunch on the terrace. Food, service and atmosphere all excellent, thank you
Was really looking forward to an anniversary lunch for me and my other half, I knew a few people would have the same idea mid week with the kids back, so I booked an outside terrace table for 2 1:30pm, it’s is situated in a beautiful spot with a spring running through the garden, absolutely stunning, BUT when we turned up 1:30 sharp, booking screen shot in hand, we were met with a member of stuff that when I said I have a booking outside for 1:30 he huffed and quite audibly shouted behind the bar, “well these two want to sit outside now too, it’s f**king ridiculous “ now I know things can get stressful but everyone outside could hear this, a (manager ) then came out and saw it was an anniversary and said he could seat us in the garden until a seat was available, we then ordered drinks then left for the garden and saw two tables available and asked if we could sit there, he then explained these two groups also have a booking , my point being well so do I, so He said “if you sit in the garden we could serve food there, I’ll just bring you some menus” so 20 minutes later we decided to look up the menu online ourselves and 5-10 minutes later we decided to leave, with all the food award this place has, I really expected to be accommodated well for an anniversary that was booked nearly a week in advance, but we were not in the slightest bit welcome.
After a long walk across the downs it was lovely to be able to sit on the terrace at the Shepherd & Dog & enjoy a cold drink & a lovely meal. The food was delicious & the staff pleasant & friendly.
Excellent service. Our waiter was really attentive and friendly and staff generally brilliant!!
We sat outside which is always lovely.
The food has really gone downhill, quality poor and over cooked making really bad value for money. Roast = 19.50!
We ordered sides of parsnips and got four sticks. They need to up the quality of food game to keep those prices.
I’ll go back for a drink and crisps as it’s on my walking trail but won’t eat there again with those prices until the quality of food and preparation improves.
Currently I wouldn’t recommend it for the food but everything else yes.
Good roast and friendly service and the food came fast.Excellent choice of beers
Good beer garden and nice ambience
Great pub in beautiful location, great service, food, some dishes excellent and some just ok, nothing bad. Desserts overpriced for the size, more pud please!
We've only ever had great food and service here! This time we brought family and they loved it too. Our Australian waitress (I'm so sorry I can't remember your name!) was just as friendly as the last time we came, the bartender was great too with nothing too much trouble. The Dog and Shepherd is our go to place for a treat!
Lovely little country pub. Friendly waiter and good service through the evening.
Good menu, with a small but varied range of choices.
The only thing we thought wasn’t so good was the children’s tapas menu. The portions were tiny! Good for very young children but any child over 5 or 6 would need at least 3 -4 of these. And as the tapas were dishes like chicken nuggets, chips, pasta it would be better to have these as plates of food.
Went to the Shepherd & Dog on a Thursday evening. All our meals were delicious, staff very friendly and helpful.
The location is lovely, with lovely views. The drinks were also great. However, the food as very average for the price and nothing special.
The servers were all very friendly, however, it was slow service! I asked for a sauce and I’d almost finished my food before I got it (either that wait ages for it and my food go cold). The same happened when I asked for water.
I’d been told to try here for years but I don’t think it’s anything extra special. Nice pub for drinks after a walk definitely, but the food is not worth the cost.
This is an idyllic British country pub but the food let it down yesterday. The menu options were very limited. No pasta or salad dishes and odd options. Not good quality or well cooked. Waiter said much of the stuff was unavailable but only when we tried to order it. The food really lets this pub down. Wouldn’t recommend
Lovely location but prefer eating in the garden, rather than along far side of stream. Staff great, food okay
The building is so beautiful and its location in the southdowns is incredible. The service was exceptional and super polite. The food was a bit of a let down to be honest. Expected slightly elevated pub grub but it was pretty bog standard unfortunately. I'd come back for drinks but I don't think I'd return for food.
So great. It was my dad's birthday and he loves Custard. They don't have Custard on the menu but they agreed to heat up and serve what we brought with us. It made it so fun and special for him! Very grateful! My food was delicious as well.
Nice outdoor seating spot and speedy service, appreciated after a long day's coastal walking
First time visit with friends. Lovely dog friendly pub with plenty of outdoors seating
Out of control dog right at the entrance, my dog felt really uncomfortable and the dog was also pouncing on any dog that passed by and children. It was really unsettling and ruined are meal. I know it wasn’t the pubs fault but still put a downer on the day. Me and my partner both had a burger and one non alcoholic beer and a blonde beer and we both had upset stomach. I’ve eaten at the shepherd and dog a few times but never been poorly, was the only thing we had all day other than a cuppa tea in the morning.
Lovely dinner, great service, really good food. Perfect spot in the beautiful village of Fulking
Food was poor quality, not very inventive, and substandard. Crudités & humous, very lacking… unpeeled lumps of carrots & celery was dirty with ends left on. Dessert, apple & pear crumble, with no crumble, more of a tart. Shall not go again. Lovely spot tho x
Beautiful setting. Great choice of food. Attentive staff.
