Visited this beautiful historic building for an evening meal. We were made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. Good choice on the menu - I particularly recommend the sea bream. Service was just right - not too slow and equally you did not feel rushed. Very relaxed and pleasant atmosphere - will definitely return. Would recommend booking - this can easily be done online.

Really lovely landlady- very personal and relaxed atmosphere and good quality food and wine. Nice background music in the hall with open fire for after dinner drinks

The food was the best we have had in a long time. Not an extensive menu, but we would rather have fresh produce and not mass produced. I had the butternut squash soup and the turkey dinner, both were very flavoursome and perfectly cooked. We would definitely recommend, we will certainly be making the trip again as good food is hard to find.

Fantastic night, the welcome was great and having a drink next to fire place in the main entrance while our dinner was cooking, was amazing. The fact of having fewer tables in same room made the atmosphere not noisy. The building itself is wow! I recommend highly.

Food excellent. Proprietor rude. We entered the pub and found ourselves in a small reception hall. There was no one to greet us so we hesitated a bit before spotting a sign painted in the wall indicating the direction of the dining room. So we headed that way. We turned the corner and barely took a few steps before a loud male voice barked “Can I help you?” Not at all in a warm welcoming tone but that of one who felt we were trespassing on his property. We told him we had reservations for lunch. He ordered us to go to the bar and wait. We were so put off that had we not travelled quite a distance to get there, we would have left right there and then. Thankfully the lady in the bar was very friendly and cheerful. Food was excellent although there was a very long wait for it. After a wait in the bar, there was further long wait in the dining room. When the food finally arrived it came out piping hot with an impressive variety of vegetables. The skin of the roast chicken was delicious — crispy and flavourful. The meat was moist. The beef was just as good. The food is fabulous. But the pub was empty on a Sunday at lunch time. It should have been hopping given the quality of the food. Maybe the proprietor put them off. He should not be in the service industry or he should be kept in the kitchen away from guests. We enjoyed the food but he left a sour taste in our mouth. Although we loved our meal, I hesitate recommending The Shaven Crown given our poor experience there.

The propert and courtyard are beautiful, welcome was very friendly, but the food we all had was cold, very over cooked (mushy), no flavour. Mum had roasted butternut with curry sauce, no spicy, curry taste at all. My fish was bland and over cooked with horrid mushy, turnips. The menu sounds good, but chef you need to up your game. We were booked early eating at 12:30, no one else there, so no reason not to be good. Really disappointed. Mrs R Coombes

Beautiful location, really friendly welcome and service, and lovely food (Sunday lunch). The restaurant happened to be quiet on the occasion we visited, which seemed a shame because it’s well worth a visit. Will certainly return soon!

A hidden gem with very friendly owners that added a personal touch and made us feel very welcome. The only feedback I have is that our waitress needed to chat when she was looking after the tables.

A lovely building dating from the 14th century, tastefully and carefully turned into a super hotel and restaurant. Big triple height hallway with massive fire, staircase and double vault roof for pre and post dinner drinks, then through to the other wing where the restaurant has a modern interior but still with views of the inner courtyard. Food was tasty, a nice summer menu and also a lower budget set menu, but the prices are fine. Wine list is good and reasonable. Service was excellent with the owner in the bar and pleasant young people serving us. Breakfast also good if you stay - I had eggs Florentine. I will go again.
