Located in the heart of the Pinyon Pine-Juniper woodland area of the Sierra Nevada’s, elevated at 5,817 feet in the town of Truckee, resides The Sawyer at Schaffer’s Mill. Heritage, history, and respect for those lumberjacks who came before is at the core of Schaffer’s Mill. Within that group, no one is more revered than the sawyer, an occupational term referring to someone who cuts and works with wood. With food true to the land and served by real Truckee people, The Sawyer is the perfect name for the final, most awaited addition to Schaffer’s Mill.

The Sawyer is centered around an amazing indoor and outdoor bar with views of Lookout Mountain and the golf course. The restaurant features a locally crafted all-day menu with selections of shareable, freshly-prepared salads, generous sandwiches, and delicious entrees, all complemented by chef’s special features.

Please note during times of high volume, reservations are required for any non-members of the Schaffer’s Mill community.

It was a midweek night and we were welcomed graciously and given a choice of seats. Water was provided as well as menus within 5 minutes of our arrival. We ordered a couple of appetizers as it was still happy hour and they were amazing. The waiter helped with our entree selections and was spot on. The food was served hot and there was plenty-enough for dinner the next day. The desserts topped off a great meal. We will be back at our new favorite dining spot.

Fantastic service and great down home cooking. Very new and clean interior. We had the chicken fried chicken for entrees and the crispy cauliflower as an appetizer. Both excellent. Kids had the Mac and cheese which they loved.

Excellent food and amazing atmosphere. The server and bar tender were very friendly. The host (when we first came in) wasn't very friendly and didn't exactly make us feel welcome. Everything else was excellent and we look forward to returning.

Our starters: Cheese bread and chili were the best we ever had. The entres (pot roast, and grilled salmon) were generous proportions and delicious. We were there on a cold, snowy night but inside was a warm, cozy atmosphere. We loved it and will definitely be back !

Came in for Thanksgiving. Last minute reservations taken with graciousness. Welcomed and felt taken care of even though we were the last seating of the night. The food was perfect! Best T giving dinner I have ever had. The portions are generous and the drinks are strong and creative. Lovely atmosphere.
Highly recommend!!!

We stopped here on our way back home and taken away by the location. It’s in a beautiful woodsy surrounding in a quiet and peaceful location. We went at a time when it wasn’t busy but the servers were very welcoming and nice. The Brussels sprouts were delicious and highly recommended. The pot roast and chicken fried chicken was indeed comfort food. Our son order the pepperoni pizza and it was also very delicious. This will be our detour anytime we visit Tahoe/Reno area.

Our business team enjoyed a delicious meal at The Sawyer. The food, the beverages, the ambience, and the service combines for a delightful experience. We had two vegetarian guests in our party, and were delighted to see vegetarian options on the menu. In addition, the kitchen was very accommodating by omitting meat from the preparation of pasta dish that appealed to one of these guests. We love The Sawyer and were happy to share another dining experience with our business associates.

Horrible. Clearly a Members only favorite. Hostess was rude, didn’t smile when we walked in, and when we asked if we could have one of the TWO empty booths we were told that they were reserved for members. Those boots sat empty for the entire two hours we were there. The food that they actually weren’t out of was just ok. We tried ordering two separate appetizers, Brussel Sprouts, and shrimp and crab dip... out. My husband and son ordered Rib Eye steaks, out. Specials...soup, scallops and something else...out. Ok...we’ll adjust. The service was so slow...yet tables that came in after us had their meals long before us...and...I saw that they had the shrimp and crab dip!! Must be members!! I don’t appreciate less service because I’m not a member. My money is certainly the same as theirs.Thought we would try something new....wrong decision. If you are not a “member” don’t waste your time or money.

I like this place. It is our second time here. It's cozy and comfortable but casual. The food is good, well presented and the service (Lane) is excellent. the ambiance is nice also, especially if you sit outside in the summer. The only minor complaint, the veggies are undercooked by a little bit. We like to bring our own wine and the corkage is $20.

We went there to celebrate my wife's birthday while we were staying in Truckee. Very nice interior, spacious and a very mountain type atmosphere. It is in a gated community, so when we got to the gate we were a little taken back, but the guard said it happens all the time, and we were at the right place.
The service was very quick, though we went on a Monday evening so it wasn't terribly crowded. Our server Nate was very personable and efficient. The brussel sprouts we had as an appetizer were crispy and tasty, with a nice dipping sauce. I ordered a wedge bleu cheese and bacon salad that was huge with lots of bleu cheese. My wife had a squash orchiette pasta that she enjoyed. I had the pot roast with mashed potatoes and vegetables. Very good, but the salad and appetizer had filled me up, so I only ate half of it. Final verdict, the food was very good. We brought our own bottle of wine, but Nate waived the corkage. I think that was because I'd mentioned this was a birthday dinner. The whole meal came to just over $60. That my friends is a bargain for the food we enjoyed. Definitely will go back next time in Truckee.

It was our first time there. The facility, dining area, and bar werewell laid out and looked great. Food and service more than met our expectations. My only recommendation is to slow things down. We had a drink at our table and ordered appetizers and main courses. The entire dinner only lasted 45 minutes from the time we were seated until the time I paid the bill.

First time here- won't be the last. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed and treated with phenomenal service. The brussel sprout appetizer was amazing and so was the wedge salad. The pasta entree and fried chicken was just as good and was only topped by the butter cake for dessert. Portion size was considerable and we were able to have left overs for dinner at home the next day. The atmosphere is nice with there being plenty of room. Would consider going for Happy Hour alone.

Menu is diverse, food above average. Would not recommend for 2 reasons: Service was substandard, waiter inattentive and spent 10 minutes sitting at the bar talking to a friend. We had to ask 3 separate people for a check. Which makes sense considering issue #2 - The Sawyer includes an 18% gratuity on all checks regardless of party size. The restaurant discloses in the smallest font possible at the bottom of the menu, and barely noticeable on the presented bill. Our meal and experience did not equate to an 18% experience.

Educate your waitstaff to proactively let people know gratuity is included, and management should pay more attention to your guests and staff.

Thank you for dining with us and providing feedback. We are always striving to create a positive dining experience. We are planning to remove the automatic gratuity starting November 1st. This was our third time eating at The Sawyer; each time we have taken different guests with us. We have all ordered a variety of menu items, and everyone has enjoyed everything we have eaten there. Kudos to the Chef! The choices range from comfort foods like pot roast to innovative pizzas to perfectly-prepared fish and chips to a fantastic speciality burger, and more, and the prices are pleasingly reasonable. We have returned and introduced others to The Sawyer solely because of the menu.
On the flip side, the service has not been good any of the three times. Perhaps the servers are demotivated by the fact that a gratuity is automatically added to the bill; perhaps the servers are spread too thin to adequately accommodate the customers.
Since we are not residents or members of Schaffer's Mill, we are only able to dine at The Sawyer through an Open Table reservation. We certainly appreciate the opportunity to enjoy the restaurant, and hope this limited access will continue to be offered. Thank you.

We've had good dinners there in the past but something changed. Our apps took forever and ended up showing up with our dinner, dinner was cold and our cookie dessert, which is usually awesome, wasn't cooked so we had a pan of cold dough with ice cream on top. Hoping they get back on track because we like having this dining option in Truckee.

Good food, pleasant servers. That said, the menu was shorter than we would have liked and there was no exterior lighting to indicate which building held the restaurant or where the front door was. Good luck! (We found the gym first. 😳)

This is my fourth time eating at the Sawyer and by far this was the worst experience. It was a Monday night and extremely quiet. It took a little while for the server to take our order. Once we placed it, our wait was well over an hour, it truly was shocking.

The server and manager did come over repeatedly to apologize, but didn’t say why there was a delay. They were very embarrassed and ultimately ‘comped’ our wine, which was nice of them, but they could have brought over bread or a little something to eat while we were waiting for an entire hour.

I always order the same dish because I like it so much, but not this time. I get the vegetable stirfry which previously had large pieces of vegetables on top of the rice and a savory teriyaki sauce.

When my dish was finally delivered, I was stunned to see what was on the plate. It was a large platter of white rice with a small amount of shredded vegetables. I didn’t complain because I was not going to wait another hour to get anything else, but I can’t believe I paid $15 in essence for a platter of white rice.

I was and still am very disappointed, this is the one new restaurant in Truckee, it had great promise, I’m not sure I’ll try it again.
