The Saracens Head, Church Lane, Shirley, Derbyshire DE6 3AS

About this restaurant

Set in the historical pretty village of Shirley, on the edge of the Peak District, just outside Ashbourne. The Saracens Head dating back to 1791 has bags of Gastropub style, whilst cleverly holding on to an authentic country pub feel. Stone floors give way to smart carpeting, cosy corners a mass with cushions and two roaring fires. Pub favourites and restaurant style dishes cooked by award winning chef and his team, serve modern British food using the best local and seasonal produce. Our artisan bread board and English Cheeses are a must!
Booking is advisable to avoid disappointment.

Range of food from steak, duckling, lamb shank, fish curry, quiche, lasagne and more. Range of prices for mains from £10.95 to £19.95. Some vegetaran options. Starters include a generous sharing board for 2 at £8.95, which would have served 4 with a bit more bread. Menu selection is not printed on cards but written on blackboards, so I assume it is subject to frequent changes. Generous, but not excessive, helpings with the mains. All food cooked to a tee and fresh. Modern, but rustic feel to the pub. Service discreet but attentive. Venue reckons on timed evening bookings: 7 and 9pm - so two hours allowed for first sitting. We'd taken the earlier time, and I expected to be hurried along as the time approached 8.45pm, but there was clearly no reservation following ours, so we lingered over coffee and could have stayed late.

Having been here before we knew what to expect. As always the service is excellent and the ambience is perfect. Food was really good instead of amazingly superb and the value for money of the fillet steak is a little questionable. However , it was cooked to perfection We will definitely be back !

We have been visiting The Saracens Head prior to the change to a 'Gastropub'. We came upon it by chance and have visited it whenever we have been in the Ashbourne area. It is a good friendly restaurant in a well heeled country area. It was quiet when we arrived and busied up as time went on with customers familiar to the area. We feel that the food quality is above average. We enjoyed our meal and will come back again. As for the pricing structure you pay for what you get - neither cheap nor as expensive as it could be.

This gastro pub manages to maintain a quintessential country pub ambience. I have now visited several times and never been disappointed by the quality of food. My last visit was on Friday evening and I was glad that I booked mid week as the the restraint was full around 8.00pm. In all my visits the service has been friendly and efficient. Perhaps as I have visited several times the menu could of offer some more variety, however this is a catch 22 as I would not like this to be at the expense of my favourite beef and steak choices

Been in January and had lovely meal in front of restaurant. This time stuck in far corner of back room. The table needed sanding and varnish as surface gone tacky. Room Feels a bit like poor family area especially in relation to front areas. Food poor. Salad potato inedible as gone soggy over cooked. Salad uninspired. Quiche tepid and average
