The Royal is operated by James Hickson, who has a solid hospitality background having learned his trade at well-loved restaurants and gastropubs including St John, Great Queen Street, The Canton Arms and Moro. James is hands-on at the pub, overseeing the relaxed yet lively atmosphere, friendly service and sophisticated food and drink. The kitchen is led by head chef, Andrew Taylor-Gray, who has previously worked at Petersham Nurseries, Hix and The Canton Arms.

The Royal has been included in the Michelin Guide since February 2020 with Bib Gourmand status, which we have maintained ever since.

A welcoming gastropub for locals and visitors alike in St. Leonards-On-Sea and Hastings, low-key and down-to-earth, The Royal occupies an historic corner site right opposite St. Leonards Warrior Square station.

The food was very nice and the service was excellent. It was a hot day and we found the temperature inside to be a bit too hot for comfort but it got better into the evening. We arrived earlier than our booking and really appreciated the staff finding us a table. Would definitely recommend the restaurant - well worth a visit!

Two Meals where accepted as satisfactory, but not above so. Two Meals the diners felt the quality and content of the meal was only fair The Whole Sea Bass with mustard potatoes was disappointing, the potatoes were served cold as salad potatoes these resemble left over from earlier meal content and did not compliment the meal served with Rocket and two slices of Tomato a third vegetable would have added depth to the disappointing content of the meal the potatoes would have been more suited served warm as this would have enhanced the perception of freshness and not left over from earlier perception. Generally the service was ok but there was an air of superiority to the servers attitude. disappointing experience given the hype of the description of the Royal being a premier choice for the location. Expensive given the quality, content and overall experience of the food and service received. When the bill was settled there was no dialogue and no thanks for custom small establishment personnel effort for large appreciation from a customer perspective. Complacency bourne from reputation ego always over creates over expectation and under delivery.

A quality Sunday lunch. The rare sirloin (which we all had) was beautifully cooked. And I can recommend the Primitivo

A really ho way pub in a quirky area of the town. Excellent food. Beautifully cooked and very friendly staff.

We booked a table for lunch with friends. We all had delicious food - the smoked mackerel pate was full of flavour with lovely herbs. The main course I had was chicken pie to share - utterly delicious with a rich gravy / sauce. Loved the humour of the servers.
