The Robinson Ale House Asbury Park Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I had dinner there July 7th, and sorry to report, the food was awful. We had visited the Red Bank location the prior week, and everything was pretty good, especially the fish tacos. Fast forward to Asbury Park, where this time I had Swordfish. I am still sleepless at night wondering what it was that I gutted through out of amazement. Best description: a tasteless overly microwaved hot mashed granular pulp. Really sad for a place with so much potential. As a throw-in, service was very slow.
Drove down from Morris County for lunch and will happily go back. I went to Asbury Park as a child in its heyday and I'm happy to see after decades of tough times the area is going through a much-needed renaissance. I'm glad McLoone's is playing a part believing in this old beach resort town...
It was ehhh...
Service was interesting. She kept asking us if we needed a refill (twice). We hadn't ordered anything yet.
The appetizer (crabcake[s]) only came with one. How is it possible that the menu is plural and we only get one? Still, it was good and i would've liked another.
The Caesar salad was water and the dressing was bland.
The place is well known for its burgers, which delivered.
Dessert tasted like any other Applebees/Houlihans/Fridays apple crisp with vanilla ice cream.
I paid 100 bucks for the meal and I wasn't happy.
We reserved a table on open table. It does not for outside tables. We were sent back and forth between inside and outside before we got seated. The steak was overdone. The vegetables and fries were cold. When I sent the fries back to get some hot ones, they reheated them! The waitress may as not have been there.
We tried McLoone's Asbury Grille for the first time for a lunch date. We've been to many of the other McLoone's restaurants, but unfortunately the Asbury Grille did not meet the McLoone's standard. We thought the restaurant was in need of a make over and our server came up short. Our server was extremely blase' with little or no energy. When she addressed us, she was rarely stationary and spoke to us as she was walking by. It took her 15-20 minutes to take our lunch order (after we asked her twice to order), yet she didn't seem very busy. She was definitely not the top caliper that we've experienced at other McLoone restaurants such as Robinson's and the new Rum Runner.
We throughly enjoyed our meal. The crab cake starter was a pure joy. I especially enjoyed the stuffed flounder with lobster roulade and extraordinary mashed potatoes. Dessert was a wonderful key lime pie with graham crust. wife loved her shell fish fetuccini. We have eaten at Mc'Loones on several occasions and have always come away more than satisfied.
The service was great, but the restaurant wasn't well kept. The fans had clumps of dust hanging off of them and there was an overall musty smell in the place. The drinks were perfectly made, but the clams smelled overly fishy and the buffalo clam dip had a hair in it. We paid 100 dollars for 2 drinks and 2 appetizers.
Brought my out of town friends to show them around the places we used to "hang out" during my teenage years in 1960's. Grew up in Asbury Park & many memories collected on the beach & boardwalk.
One thing we thought unusual, however, was when we ordered no appetizers before dinner, our small plates were taken from the table (waitress specifically mentioned removing them). Left no convenient place to put down our oil dipped bread.
My friends & I have dined out together in many types of restaurants, from chains to very nice places in NYC, & have never had our plates removed.
We enjoyed our meals. Creative combinations and outstanding traditional dishes. Great job maintaining ambiance of former Howard Johnson's! Your restaurant helped show them what an amazing place AP was and is. Many thanks.
The ONLY reason that I would recommend this restaurant is because the meal we had there this past Sunday was a definite one off...
We have been to McLoone's on a number of occasions.. all good. So, when we had a birthday to celebrate, the birthday girl said "let's go back to McLoones!!".
We sat for a LONG time waiting for our server... LONG. She left the appetizer plates on the table while we were eating our meal and not because we requested that they stay. The food was delivered by servers, but no one bothered to take the empties away.
And WHAT were they thinking by serving calamari that was so overcooked it was brown? Did no one think to question that before putting it on the table? Calamari is not BROWN... it is golden yellow. Needless to say, tough as all get out..
And when dinner was over, we waited again.. Long. Long enough to wonder if she had left and gone home and certainly long enough to have a discussion about the leftover food stuffs that were in the crack of the table....
They fell short. Way short. I certainly will give them another try for a regular dinner out, but will not risk another special occasion here.....
Really subpar. I've eaten at the McCloone's in West Orange and I don't know why I thought the one in Asbury Park might be any better. I've explored since then and AP has much better food. The issues: food just didn't taste fresh, sauces were too heavy, requests for dressing on the side were ignored, fried stuff also too heavy, just... blah. The view is the only nice thing about it. Seriously, don't waste your money. I felt bad for the staff who seemed to know they were serving up substandard fare.
My wife and I got married here last year and it was amazing! We loved everything about it. Last week we went back to have dinner and celebrate our one-year anniversary. We sat outside and enjoyed the fantastic food and views/sounds of the ocean just steps away. Definitely a great place for any occasion!
We had the 8hr short rib, salmon and turkey Ruben entrees and all plates were DELICIOUS. Our waitress was very attentive and very knowledgeable of the menu. It was a very busy Friday night on Memorial Day weekend but the waitress and the managers all pitched in to make our dining experience wonderful. Our glasses were always filled and our bread basket and red pepper dip replenished as we waited for our apps and entrees to arrive. Great dining experience overall. Thanks!
I don't know why all the negative reviews on Yelp. I was prepared to dislike this place, but booked a reservation because of its nearness to the Paramount Theater. I was surprised with very quick, accurate service, a really nice glass of red and we each ordered burgers to be served very differently. Both came out perfect with a nice side of fries. I'll definitely go back next time I'm in town!
Waitress was not friendly, $15 Margarita was weak and not served in a nice glass (was in a beer glass), calamari was terrible and both of our burgers were overcooked (we ordered them medium and medium rare are there was no pink at all). Would not recommend or go back. It's unfortunate because it's right next door to the Paramount Theater and it's very convenient to get dinner here before a show. Bummer.
We went to McLoones for Sunday brunch and it was absolutely mobbed!! We were a table of 2 surrounded by 3 tables of about 16-20 each and the rest if the restaurant was also full of large groups of 12 or more. We were sat near the window, which on any other occasion may be considered a prime seating location, however, it made it nearly impossible to get past the large groups to get our buffet brunch. One group which consisted of 2 of the large tables were there to celebrate a birthday, so we had to listen to the announcements being made to everyone attending. Having a group this large it seems they should have had a more private location.
The food was OK. We started with a made to order omelet with bacon and potatoes, and then returned to the buffet for some fruit and cheese, and one of the scrumptious little desserts. I don't feel we ate enough food for the price paid, however there was plenty of selections, mainly lunch/dinner choices that didn't appeal to us for brunch. (Pork, beef, chicken & a pasta dish). I also had a $5 mimosa and my husband had a $5 Bloody Mary which he said was very good.
Next time I think I would consider their outside option which looked a lot less stressful and crammed, and maybe go a little later and have the lunch menu.
Well sorry to say we didn't have the most attentive wait person. Food was 3 star maybe a stretch to 4 at best, and it was just the beginning of the summer crowds, waited too long for someone to ask us if there was anything else, like coffee, desert? We had to ask for coffee to go because our wait person was nowhere to be seen? To even flag them down.
Trying to make the 7:00 show at the Stone Pony, we had 5:30 reservations finally got out 7:20
Might try again when 4 of us can spend the night hanging around.
the beach. The chicken I had was good but the "fresh" tuna that my friend had was only ok. He said it actually wasn't as fresh-tasting as he had expected. It was a nice quiet place and I'm sure (when it stays lighter later) it'll have lovely beach scenery. I'll be back to walk the boardwalk and sit outside. Oh and the caramel apple martini was very good.
Service was extremely slow for whatever reason. Wait staff was very attentive but the food took a really long time to come out. Been there several times, this is the first time this has happened. Also, the burgers and sandwiches should come with fries automatically. You should not be charged extra. They should eliminate the coleslaw and give you fries. Just a suggestion.
I took my husband to dinner here for his birthday. Luckily, it was his request - not my suggestion. We had lunch there in the late summer and it was amazing, so that is why he wanted to go. We were seated quickly and ordered martinis. Mine was a White Chocolate martini and his was a gin martini. When we received them, the waitress poured the gin martini into my chocolate covered glass. After the new drinks arrived, we ordered appetizers and entrees. The appetizers came quickly, which we appreciated. But not more than 15 minutes later, out came the entrees. We should have sent them back to the kitchen, but no, we had a table full of plates and dealt with it. The food was good although the Ahi Tuna entrée with French fries was a bit of a strange combo, and we ordered dessert. Problem was that we told our waitress to give us about 10 minutes before serving dessert so that we could finish our wine. 30 minutes later we still did not see her. Now, there were only 4 tables of patrons in the restaurant, so it wasn't that she was busy. I saw her at the receptionist desk hanging out. I got her attention and told her to forget about dessert and just bring the check. We may come back for lunch, but I am sure we will never go to dinner here again- there are too many restaurants in Asbury Park with better dinner service!
Thank you McLoones!!!
We were a large party with 3 Birthdays and with a very diet specific person.. Lots of allergies... Our server was awesome! Friendly attentive and helpful... The chef was very accommodating! The manager was wonderful. The food was great! The 2 piece band was a pleasure to listen to. It was a wonderful night out! We recommend highly!!!! Thank you for making it a special night!
We dined on New Year's Eve and requested a table that day. We were accommodated and dinner was good. There was a pre-fix menu and they offered the regular menu. Food was good service was ok. Unfortunately we felt our waitress rushed us. Dinner came out while we were eating our salad. Waitress did not ask us if we wanted coffee when she offered dessert, she didn't let us finish our drinks before she brought dessert and then we had to ask her for coffee.
Food was ok, but not exceptional. Really thought there would be more steak entrees, but there's only one.
We will definitely go back for the Sunday Brunch that they offer. We've been there before and it's been excellent.
