The Restaurant at Sopwell House
Excellent celebration of our wedding anniversary. Changed from restaurant to brasserie on the evening with no problem which we really appreciated.
A great meal, excellent service and a relaxed atmosphere
One of the most amazing meals we have ever had. We received the most outstanding service from Raffael and Rosie and we cant wait to come back. Thank you so very much.
Super evening at The Restaurant at Sopwell House. Food was fantastic and full of flavour, beef fillet was cooked perfectly and the panna cotta desert with lavender jelly and meringue was superb. Service was very attentive but we weren't rushed at all which gave us a chance to listen to the guitarist playing some lovely Spanish ballad's, making our romantic evening out a thoroughly enjoyable one. I would highly recommend fine dining at The Restaurant, Sopwell House.
Very disappointed with the Restaurant, no real atmosphere and food really terrible. Does not cater for vegetarians. Not sure what they are trying to achieve here, needs a full review.
The restaurant was not busy when we arrived on a Saturday evening. The room reminded me of a seaside hotelk with large windows. The tables were occupied by couples who I assume were there for an overnight stay. The food was innovative and very good. I had pork belly to start which was a very small portion, however very tasty, for main course I had the beef which was cooked to perfection. To end the meal I had salted caramel tart which was very nice. In conclusion the food was very good and worth a visit with a spa day at the Sopwell House club spa before dinner.
It was my husbands ‘special ‘ birthday and we had a lovely lunch with good friends, food and service.
Excellent tasting menu, adapted to be vegan for us.
Terrible dining experience. Billed as Fine Dining it is more like Zizzi’s.
Food was rushed, ridiculously rushed. We had starters 5 mins after ordering, then cleared and mains 10 mins later. No service at all. No wine pouring, no table clearing. Terrible.
Staff also did not listen / could not understand. Asked for a drinks menu for the bill. Worst dining experience in St Albans in years.
Food was mediocre, wine list is rubbish.
My wife and I had a lovely evening meal at sopwell house, the staff were excellent and the food and wine was very good.
The smallest portions ever seen in a restaurant, with poor advise regarding sizes of side dishes together with a high bill. Extremely disappointing.
Staff friendly and welcoming, food wonderful, and reasonably priced. I would throughly recommend
Excellent helpful service throughout Sunday lunch. Nice menu choice, which was all available. Food nicely presented and tasted good.
Since our last visit of a few years ago, when we were disappointed by nearly everything - we were very pleasantly surprised by our visit with friends for Sunday lunch. Reasonable good choices on the menu, we all enjoyed our selections, decor first class, attentive service and very good value. Our only gripe - we would have preferred one table for 4 x persons not 2 x individual tables for 2 x persons!
Room 245 booking:
Food - I’m sure exceptional but starter and main was served luke warm. We were there to stay the night, relax and get away from work pressures and so didn’t want to make a fuss or spoil the flow of the meal.
Service was the best.
Ambiance. Restaurants at the hotel have a dress code. The restaurant had a lovely soft and relaxing feel with nice decor. We dressed for the occasion, it’s just a shame that hotel/spa guests continuously walk past in bathrobes and look in to check the restaurant. It spoils the atmosphere. There is a beautiful grand piano in the restaurant entrance, it’s a shame it wasn’t being played.
Overall. If the food was hot, we couldn’t see the bathrobe Spa guests shuffling past every few minutes and the piano was playing it would be full 5* across the board. Maybe it’s just because we ate early at 19:00?, the feedback is for our experience on the night.
Food and service were both amazing...3 courses for £30 is really good value too...
Terrible. Staff were rude. Food was rubbish. Over priced at £150 for 3 with no drinks and only two courses each. AVOID!!!
Great service - extremely helpful and great with our kids (aged 10 and 7)
Great food and wine at great value prices. Wonderful atmosphere with live music and perfect service.
Excellent meal and service, lovely place. Friendly, welcoming. Could have done with more choice but aside from that nothing to complain about. Would return.
An enjoyable meal, first time at Sopwell House, hotel sits in nice grounds. The food was very good, the service at times we found to be a little over eager. The wine selection, seemed to be pointed towards more expensive wines. But all in all an enjoyable evening for a birthday.
The chef here is amazing her food is really clever and delicious would definitely visit again
Outstanding, the quality of the food and service was excellent
Had a very lovely time. Service was attentive, and the food was excellent. We are looking forward to coming back, hopefully soon.
Very impressive food, very tasty but as fine dining, small portions. BUT the restaurant handed out a lot of free food too, including different breads, starter / taster dishes and then sweets at the end which included fudge and macaroons. Service was good too. The grounds are nice and pretty.
We had dinner here for our wedding anniversary. Atmosphere was calm and pleasant, and they had a pianist which was a lovely touch.
Food was generally delicious - they had lovely breads and amusebouch (spelling?!) whilst we waited for starters.
Although not vegetarian, I went for the veggie starter and main - both were excellent and delightfully presented. My husband went for fish for his starter and main. They were nice, though he felt the main was a little bland for his taste (personal preference).
Dessert was fantastic - well presented and very tasty. The wine was pleasant, although we had eaten in the Brasserie of the hotel the night before and actually preferred that wine!
Service was good and waiters polite and helpful. Would return.
I received an email for a set menu which included a starter,
main, dessert and a glass of prosecco for £35. As we were staying at the hotel for my birthday and this was a good offer I followed the link on the email to reserve a table. When we arrived at the restaurant we were given the normal menu, on this menu the main meal alone was £30. I asked for the set menu to which I was rudely told “you have to book that online” I replied saying that’s what I done. The waiter said I hadn’t and walked off. We kept being harassed every few minutes to order to which we decided it wasn’t good value for money, the staff were rude and the email was misleading. Therefore we left and had a pleasant meal in st.albans town. The next day when we were in the lift going downstairs to check out and this set menu was also advertised in the lift of the hotel! This should be taken down and you need to look in to the link attached to the email you send out. I wouldn’t not visit again
Hugely overpriced mediocre quality food. Good service saves the day
Disappointed to see diners arriving in casual clothing including jeans. Background Music was a little too loud. However we both had a good experience and our waitress was very good. Her service and attention to details was excellent and she made our evening just that little bit more special.
The food was very god, but, on a personal level, the lamb was just a little too rare.
We had a dinner at The Restaurant. Service was great. Food was ok. Monkfish much to salty.
Beef was very good and soft.
We made a mistake and went to the Brasserie for desert. We had a tiramisu. Worst tiramisu we ever had. Its more like tiramisu drink. Far from real tiramisu.
So avoid Brasserie for desert.
Overall I will be going again.
Had hoped to avail of the £35 set menu (I love a bargain) but was told I hadn’t booked in the correct way. Apparently I was supposed to select an option in the OpenTable booking process to signal preference for the set menu. Have since experimented with other dates and for the life of me cannot see what I could have done differently. No such option seems to reveal itself.
Great food but dining room lacks ambience.
Served fish to my vegetarian mother. Poor handling of issue. Broader service was terrible and manager fairly dismissive of issue.
Food was great. Despite a mix up with the set menu why were very accommodating.
Nice and quiet. The staff is friendly and polite abnd the food is really good.
Wonderful place for outstanding Sunday lunch. Ate in main restaurant which is lovely
Enjoyed Sunday lunch for our anniversary. The waitress admitted they were short staffed. The meat was very raw but plenty of vegetables. No half bottles of wine so we had a glass of wine and a cider.
Both the starter and desert were beautifully presented and tasted delicious.
Being Sunday lunch the restaurant was very noisy. I think I would suggest an evening meal would be a better celebration.
Excellent service and food above all. Location is nice.
We had a lovely evening, with drinks in the bar first. The amuses bouches were all delicious. Main meal was pretty good but just could have done with a bit more flavour, or perhaps seasoning? The overall atmosphere of the main lobby wasn’t really matched in the restaurant, which felt a bit bright and lacking atmosphere. I’m not a big fan of sitting on the same side of the table when there’s only two of you. Wine was lovely. Service pretty good all in all.
Our wedding anniversary
Upmarket restaurant with good food. Service and ambience were alright. My only crib being, you could constantly see other hotel guests in bathrobes some with trainers passing by. When you think of a nice dining env where people are expected to wear jackets, these sights seem to disrupt the Overall ambience of the place.
