We had a day retreat at this hotel which is rather tired in places. I understand and appreciate it is keen to keep its old-fashioned, nostalgic feel but there was litter around the pool and the changing rooms do not look particularly clean. Lunch was included in this offer and being vegetarian I chose the vegetarian club sandwich unfortunately I was given the prawn club sandwich in error which I bit into without checking the contents of it. The server was horrified and apologetic and it was quickly rectified. We decide to have the dessert - a blackcurrant cheesecake which was very bland itself however the blackcurrant puree was tasty. This hotel is in such a great location and could be amazing with some TLC and attention to detail.

The Maitre’d welcomed us in a charming way and took us to our table and initially the staff were attentive bring water and taking drinks - but on that evening there seemed to be a serious lack of waiting staff as we had to wait about 15 minutes before someone took our food order - even then we were being told it was the last three of this or the last one of that - the wine was good but overpriced - the food was wholesome but again for a prix fixe overpriced - the dining room was large but not very full we were eating at 7:30 so there could have been an earlier sitting for families - we waited quite a while for our food to arrive and the family of five behind us were on their third round of drinks before their food was brought - and they seemed to have even less choice than us in terms of what was left on their third round menu - because of the delay we were told that the coffees were on their third round house but when I came to settle the hotel bill I noticed they had been added back on. Needless to say we did not book to eat here on our second night’s stay but rather drove up the road to the village to find somewhere else to enjoy. I think a complete overhaul of the dining experience needs to be undertaken if the hotel is going to continue to offer evening meals - if I had booked a meal here as a none resident I probably would have seriously asked for a discount because of the poor service and quality of the food.

Dinner seemed expansive, rather tired and reheated. Large communal restaurant area with little ambience. More suited to budget family dining than an intimate evening meal.

Nice food. The room needs to be modernised, very dated. But nice to have bread rolls on the table when you arrive and also water...
