We went to Cowley to enjoy their Bottomless Brunch in the restaurant. We were greeted at the front door by a pleasant chap who showed us to the restaurant where we were greeted by a guy who clearly wasn’t having a great day. He wasn’t rude but definitely wasn’t welcoming. A very nice older man took over but the service throughout was inattentive. Drinks service slow or forgotten. Food was ok but certainly nothing to rave about. House wine was drinkable. The place has a nice, cool look but the experience doesn’t match up. Shame really as I’d go back regularly otherwise.
The food is ok, but over priced for what it is. The service could be a lot better for the price and overall quality of the hotel.
Attentive staff, food excellent especially the salmon starter. It is good you can have coffee or tea in the lounge.
Great service and fantastic food.
We had lunch here for a special occasion and it was incredibly underwhelming!!The portion size of the market place fish of the day was so small that it wasnt worth having and it cost £16 per person!!However I must give my comments balance and say the duty manager was very apologetic and reimbursed us for the two meals which did help.Would we return-Im afraid not!!
My first visit after living in the area for years! We had a wonderful meal overlooking one of the lakes and with logs burning on the open fire. The staff were attentive and Andrew a joy. We had a delightful walk in the grounds afterwards - welly boots provided!! We are checking our diaries for the earliest date to return and stay overnight. Thank you Cowley Manor.
Food was very good and waiters pleasant but the food delivery was extremely slow to get to the table. As a result not sure could recommend.
My partner and I were celebrating her 22nd birthday and so I reserved a table during our stay at Cowley Manor. We were greeted for our 7pm reservation and as we were the first dinner reservation, we were seated at a table of our choosing. The waitress was polite and energetic, with a good sense of humour. This elevated our impression of the restaurant even before ordering!
We ordered our wine (of which, there is a good selection of different grape varieties), and proceeded to order food. We both ordered the scallops to start, and then I had the filet of beef, with truffle and parmesan fries as a side. Chelsie ordered the market fish chowder, and minutes after our order, the waitress was back with a lovely amuse bouche (a selection of fresh bread, alongside two types of dipping sauce, and a knob of butter. The bread was lovely and light, and set a good standard for what was to come.
Our starters arrived after a small wait, and we both agreed that the scallops were some of the best that we've ever been served! Beautiful texture, amazing taste profile, and just enough to entice us for the main dish. Following the starter, the mains arrived around 20 minutes later, and the quality was just as expected. The beef was cooked perfectly to my requests (medium rare), and Chelsie's chowder was aromatic and delectable.
After our mains, we chose to not order a dessert, but Chelsie was presented with a birthday dessert plate! It was a lovely final touch to the meal.
The restaurant was never packed to full capacity during our reservation, and I think only around 6 tables were occupied during our meal.
Overall, a wonderful experience with astounding food and a warm charismatic team of waiting staff.
Lovely hotel in beautiful grounds. Fusion of modern with traditional. Nice food, well presented and with quite attentive service. No table cloths at lunch time though which was a shame.
We stayed at Cowley Manor for our first wedding anniversary and booked the restaurant for this special occasion.
We waited half an hour to order, had to ask for a wine list, waited over an hour for our starter and then another hour for our main.
Food was lovely but service appalling- we complained and they said they would give us 50% off food and drink. On check out we only received 50% off food.
The maitre d apologized and said the service was poor because the head chef had just returned from a 2 week holiday and was struggling with the speed of the full restaurant!
Delightful restaurant, excellent service lovely food!
Our first visit and I have to say a bit of a surprise and not a good one. the food was unimaginative, the service was poor and the decor of the hotel is totally out of character with the building and its lovely grounds. I dont think we will be back.
Excellent place for afternoon tea and then a stroll through the beautiful grounds. A lovely afternoon for a family.
The service was generally diabolical, although the waitress was very pleasant. Welcome was non existent.
Cowley Manor has an amazing position and fabulous building but the interiors are awful, tragic treatment of a beautiful building.
The food was delicious but the service was horrendous. The staff were young and really nervous. We waited 40 mins for our drinks which still had not turned up when our starters arrived. We were told that the bar was busy. So we sent back our starters and said we would have them when our drinks arrived. Even trying to pay the bill was a fiasco. No one knew what to do and had to wander round the hotel to help sort it! The restaurant requires serious management. Lovely location and wonderful food unfortunately let down by poor service.
Cowley manor Sunday lunch is a real treat, beautiful surroundings, delicious food - 6 of us and all can’t wait to visit there again, thank you.
Zero service, after the food was put down we never saw anyone at all and even had to poke our noses into the kitchen area to request the bill, whereupon we were asked ‘you want to pay?’! In an almost shocked manner by the waitress. (We then had to go to reception to pay, strange set up.) If we had seen someone during our meal I would of complained about the food. My friend ordered egg and avocado salad, the egg white was not cooked, just a slim, my scotch egg meat was partly raw and chilly. The kale slaw was a disgrace, kale leaves with a poor mayo dressing! Value for money was fine on our main but £4 for 10 (max) sweet potato skinny chips and a bowl of 5 small pieces of kale in mayo is outrageous. I did give feedback on the slaw and said we didn’t eat it but was not offered to have it removed from bill. Service was included, which I paid in order to exit quickly....we will not be returning or recommending.
One plus, the female receptionist who took payment was very nice and the afternoon tea that was served to other guests looked great.
The manor and grounds are beautiful but lunch was very poor - bland and unimaginative. The prices are reasonable for a brasserie style menu and we weren’t expecting fine dining just simple well made food, but the quality really was shocking.
The club sandwiches were the worst thing ordered, the bacon was boiled we think, pale brown, limp and cold. The chicken was flavourless and the top layer of runny wet, cold egg was a horrible surprise!
The staff were nice and we got the impression they mainly serve afternoon teas which may be better, however if the chef can’t make a decent sandwich then it’s unlikely.
This was a birthday lunch and very disappointing!
I had booked a table at the restaurant and on arrival could see that it was very busy (as compared to the Friday evening which I would say was much quieter). The restaurant manager took our order, the wine was brought to the table we were then left alone for approx 50 mins, no bread, no starter, nothing!
I eventually summoned a waiter and as a result, within 5 minutes we received our bread and amuse bouche. We were half way through eating this when our starters were brought to the table. We had to leave the amuse bouche half eaten. My wife had ordered the asparagus and poached egg but to her dismay, her dish was cold. It seemed to us that our starters had been waiting for service for too long. The main course was excellent.
I feel the lack of staff combined with the number of diners contributed to a poor experience. But apart from one starter, the rest of the food was very good
Hey. Spectacular. Good ingredients and very well presented. Great service in a beautiful romantic room. Wines are reasonably priced and the deserts (Yum) have recommendations as to the right booze to accompany your choice. Highly recommended.
Gorgeous experience. A last minute booking but what a lovely venue. The ambience was lovely, very relaxed and a great wine choice. Food was what you would expect, but gorgeous all the same
The food was excellent and in particular the honeycomb pudding was out of this world.
Great meal, food and service were excellent. Kids portions are huge but ours are still quite little. Very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. We were given the option to sit on the terrace but it was too hot for the little ones. The view from the terrace is stunning. Fantastic lunch and we hope to be back soon.
A great location. Grand dining overlooking beautiful gardens. Reasonably priced and great choice for a nice or a special night out.
Service pleasant but can be a little slow. Not terrible but a little slow. Relax into it and you will be fine!
Nice menu and tasty food. Was a little underwhelmed personally but nothing was bad just nothing great either.
In combination with the location the cool bar and pleasant (if a little slow) service place is well worth a trip.
The dining room is really beautiful, the menu was great making our decision tricky (in a good way!) but everything was delicious and presented perfectly. Service was friendly and everything was delivered at a good pace - we were really happy and would certainly go back and recommend to others. Thank you.
The food at the restaurant was very high quality and there was a good choice across the menu. We were a little disappointed that the service wasn’t more slick. For example, we ordered a side of greens with our main course but we had almost finished our main before it came and we had chased two separate people about it. The setting was lovely and the rest of the experience was top class. The staff were friendly and helpful too.
Great food and ambience and servers very pleasant, but 2 hours because of waits for 2 courses meant ok for us, but would be concerned recommending to a friend knowing they may wait as long and may be less tolerant
Dinner - lovely ingredients and wonderfully cooked. Chef has a deft touch with a steak! But although we only had 2 drinks, and one was lemonade, it was well over £100 for 3 courses which is a bit steep. My biggest niggle was after we were seated and had water brought to the table we were overlooked for about 10 mins (which is a long time when you're waiting, even in such a lovely room!) It was not busy and the waiters, once they realised were a little shamefaced and quick to rectify. The service thereafter was good.
Breakfast - fabulous continental buffet, wonderful choice. I enjoyed that the tables in the windows were laid so that one could make the most of the gorgeous garden views.
The cooked breakfast was pretty overpriced for the ingredients on the plate. We abstained for that reason except 1 English breakfast on our last day. Again, beautifully cooked and quality ingredients but small portion for the price.
Will be back ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Valentine's dinner 2019 ... fantastic food, great service, stunning location!
The most beautiful dining room with a creative menu using fresh local ingredients.
Excellent food and service. Even in the bar and lounge areas you would just be thinking it may be time for another drink and a waiter would appear by your side but without being intrusive. Food was delicious, breakfast, lunch and dinner. My only suggestions would be to offer vegetarians a choice, not just one item. There was nothing for vegans that I could see. Also when you've paid such a lot of money for a room it seems a bit cheeky to only offer a cold breakfast as included in the bed and breakfast rate.
Loved the meal and environment. Fantastic service. Only really big downfall for me was lack of vegetarian option - I was v disappointed with my vegetarian main and not good value for money. Other food looked amazing and probably more worth the money!
Hotel lovely. Good service from friendly staff. Food poor. A definite lack of finesse/ presentation for lunch and dinner choices. Dinner main tasty but over cooked. Sides obviously had been sitting in oven/ grill for a while. Would recommend hotel, but would recommend eat elsewhere.
Myself and my husband really enjoyed our afternoon at Cowley Manor, the food was very nice and the staff very friendly and polite, many thanks
delicious food,good ambiance,price reasonable
Two mains (duck and beef) both with the same very salty sauce. Lukewarm vegetables, potatoes not what was on the menu. One starter arrived, 10 minutes later we had to ask for the second. Small refund given, but prices were high.
We booked a table ahead of our stay at Cowley Manor, and to start the review on a positive, the food was exceptional and can't be faulted at all, I would definitely go back just for the quality of the food. The overall experience was however completely let down by the poor service we received from both the restaurant and bar staff. Before our meal we visited the main bar for some drinks and one of the two bar men just looked at us when we ordered our drinks and made no attempt at customer service, this was in contrast to the other barman who actually made an effort to talk to us and was pleasant enough so we didn't let this bother us too much. What was unacceptable however was the quality of the service in the restaurant. The service was extremely slow and the waiters were inattentive throughout our meal. We waited over an hour to be served our main course and had to go and ask if there was an issue in the kitchen before it was eventually served. We were in the restaurant for over 2 hours due to the slow service, we had to go and ask the waiters if we could order drinks and there were no updates on the order, no checks to ensure the food was ok and plates from our starters were left on the table all evening. I understand that things happen and service can be effected from time to time but at no point during the evening did anyone come over and update us or apologise for the wait. When we asked if the was a problem the manager came over and didn't really offer much explanation or apology, only saying that they had had a table of 4 and a table of 5 before us. I don't work in catering industry but a table of 4 or 5 should not be considered exceptional and doesn't justify the poor service experienced. We also saw at least two other tables complain as well during our meal and ended up being one of the last diners to leave despite arriving at 8:15pm.
Our Sunday lunch booking was let down by poor service. We waited 55 minutes for our meals to be served and there was an embarrassingly long delay before our vegetables arrived. We had to ask for sauces and there was also a further long delay when we wanted to pay and so we had to find someone at the bar. There were three waiters on duty, two of which we hardly saw and one had a food stain down the front of his black jacket. Not the sort of standards you would expect from this type of establishment. Luckily we didn’t want desserts as I noticed on our booking our table was only held from 1pm to 2.30pm and our meals weren’t served until 1.55pm and the restaurant was almost empty. We were very disappointed as on this occasion we had invited guests, having previously had good experiences of the restaurant. Even the view of the gardens was spoilt by what looked like black mobile toilets and chairs on the front lawn. We will not be rushing to return or recommend.
Disappointing meal. Beautiful dining room set high expectations and the pre- starter amuse bouche was a delicious carrot and ginger soup. Terrine starter was ok but bread was poor. Beef fillet was tough and not good. Service was adequate but none of the staff seemed to go the extra mile.
