The Refuge Steakhouse & Bourbon Bar
We visited on Valentine's Day Saturday. We sat at one of the High Top Tables. Our Server was very personable and really new the menu and offerings. Also, explained what made the restaurant unique - wood fired grill. Great selection of Bourbons. Old Fashion was excellent. Had the Ribey and my wife had the Honey Bourbon Glazed Chicken. Both were outstanding. Would definitely recommend and we will be going back to dine in the main dining room next time.
This visit was a little disappointing. The steak didnt have the flavor it usually does. It tasted like it was cooked on a gas grill with no flame. Very surprised because this place is usually phenomenal. I guess it just wasnt their night.
Very nice ambiance and the food is excellent as well! The service is commendable. Perfect for special occasion or date night. Highly recommend!
Great experience, great staff, great food....
Every single time we go to Refuge, we are always impressed. The food and service are amazing. There are always great specials to enjoy as well as a wonderful menu. I highly recommend this restaurant and consider it a special neighborhood gem! Thank you, Mark and Louis for all your hard work and dedication to your restaurant and patrons.
Was here due to Valentine’s Day and was one of the only places who had a reservation available. It was quite early evening. The spinach artichoke dip tasted like it had chunks of broccolli that had been frozen from a bag in a grocery store. Why broccoli? It wasn’t terrible but still. Ordered The pasta dish and it was quite bland and flavorless, husbands halibut was very dry. This place is absolutely gorgeous on the inside- wouldnt change anything. As far as service, our waiter was nice enough. Over excessive pouring of water by another staff was somewhat intrusive as every time he came we felt like we had to stop our conversation, It was at least 6-8 times and water never got below half a glass. Every sip he was there.... come on. Anyway, this is our second try here. First try was a similar. In my opinion( just an opinion) , the food quality, prices and choices just do not fit this place. This is not upscale - mediocre at best. Easier said than done, but maybe try a new chef with new menu revamp. It has such potential but misses the mark . That being said, we still enjoyed our time.
Excellent variety of spirits in the advertised category. Very knowledgeable bartenders. Food was made as ordered and in a timely manner. Atmosphere was excellent
One of my favorite places. Good food and drink.
They claim to be a Bourbon bar but we’re out of the first two requests. Several food safety violations such as fruit flies at table, a server with dirty long hair that was unkempt yet carrying food, a server who leaned down to smell an item he was serving. Of the four steaks ordered at table one was too fatty to eat and two were drastically under temperature. Only one was correct. Server seemed overwhelmed as if too many tables. Overall food taste was fair at best. Menu claims a 6 oz filet but I say it was 3-4 oz at best.
Food was delicious! The service and ambiance is great!
Excellent service and great food! Love the ambience.
After visiting this location with very large groups several times a month, we will no longer recommend or visit this restauraunt. We were horrified to bring friends with us and to not only be ignored once we were seated, but to have to wait almost 40 minutes to get a drink. We didn't even have a drink or bread in front of us and they wanted to know what we wanted to order for our entree. No specials offered, which we normally like to hear before we make a selection, and they took our drink menu to give to a neighboring table before we had the chance to order our drinks. I was completly appauled and embarressed as we had a very large group and for a restauraunt where our tab was over $350, I've received better service at a Waffle House.
2 elements of our evening really stand out and resulted in this poor review. We arrived early so understandably we were asked to wait in the bar area. No problem at all, we order drinks and were enjoying the evening. When it came to move to our table, the hostess came over and poked one of our party on the arm and just said table's ready. It was just a very strange way to attract someone's attention, and came over as very rude. I've been in the service industry over 20 years and this isn't to be expected! Secondly, there was a manager/owner (assuming he's this as he wasn't in uniform but was attending behind the bar and to tables) with very long hair. This was loose and flowing about, which was very off putting as he was serving food, drinks etc, I would have expected this to have been tied back. Anyone else working with long hair had it neatly tied which is what i'd expect from a food hygiene standard.
The food was good and we had an enjoyable night but these 2 things stood out to our group more and offset the positives for sure.
Overall it was OK. Probably will not go back or recommend. Thought it was a bit overpriced for the food quality, however, the food was good, just a bit overpriced. There was no place for the wait staff to go to get out of the way when they weren't busy, always hovering (several of them), did not get a feeling of being alone to have a quiet uninterrupted conversation.
Pains me to write this as my previous visit to The Refuge was outstanding. This time, however, the food left much to be desired. I will say the service was exceptional -- top notch across the board. But while our appetizers (crab cakes and Poblano cheese soup) were solid, the entrees missed the mark. My wife and I both had steaks ordered medium rare. However, not only were they chewy and not cooked consistently throughout, they arrived at the table cold, as if they'd been sitting for awhile before being served (hard to believe, as we were sitting next to the kitchen and saw food being served immediately once it was ready all night long). The other entrees ordered were no better, unfortunately. The Red Snapper with lump crab was drenched in butter, and the andouille sausage within the jambalaya was even chewier than our steaks. We did end on a good note, however, as the key lime pie was excellent (and I don't even like key lime pie). We will definitely be back, as my hope was we just caught The Refuge on an off night. But if I'm being brutally honest, this experience fell far short of the restaurant's reputation (and prices).
Nick was our server and he was amazing, attentive and awesome. The atmosphere was nice and warm. The steaks were the best!
This place is maddeningly inconsistent. On one occasion it is great. The next time service is slow, Bartender is distracted or incompetent and food is over-spiced. Atmosphere is good. Hope you catch them on a good night!
Overall very satisfied.
Definitely enjoyed our night. Got right in on a Saturday evening. No wait. Food and drinks were awesome. It was quiet enough to have a nice conversation but not so quiet that everyone would be able to ease drop. Only negative was that we sat close to the door and it got a little chilly. Great time overall. Will be coming back.
The food is always delicious and the waiters are always top notch. Octavio has been our waiter numerous time and he is always professional and very accommodating.
Service was great, food was just ok.
Still one of our favorite places to eat. good drinks. Good staff. Tonight our waitress was good but seemed inexperienced/nervous but she tried hard. Food was good. Sides were hot, which sometimes is an issue. Just wish there were more fresh fish options at Refuge for when we don't want a steak. Even if it is just a special for the night. Maybe a seared tuna or sea bass.
My moms meal- steak- was good. But my pan-seared fish was breaded and just not good. Ordered the pasta instead, and it was nothing spectacular. Probably won't go back.
Excellent as always!
Simply must try!
Excellent on every level
It was a wonderful time with an incredibly good staff
Great service and food
Had reservations but had to wait 20 minutes for table. Then seated in far left side with bright lights like an OR, not the cozy darker experience we had previously. Service was good and friendly, but food took too long and then was bland (risotto) and cold (steaks, brussel sprouts, lamb, risotto).
We had heard so many great things about this restaurant so we had to try it. The ambiance was great. Our waiter Mike was the best. He explained the menu and told us his favorite items. The food was great. We highly recommend this place.
Food was served at room temperature. Not good for a steak and sides. The soup was excellent and they had an impressive list of adult beverages.
Birthday dinner for the hubby with friends. The dessert show table side was delightful, but the drinks were amazing!
Waiter was inattentive and had to track him down at least 4 times. Food and drinks were good. Too loud and overall crowded for social conversation.
A very expensive place to eat, especially the wine list. I wouldn't have as many friends I I sent them here.
Our first time at refuge. Great restaurant, nicely laid out inside with plenty of space between tables and an open view of the cooking area. Service was first class, attentive but not over bearing. We were given plenty of time to enjoy our meal, we never felt rushed and there was a nice pause between appetizers and entree’s. Food was excellent with a special shout out to the pork belly appetizer, the steaks, the risotto side and the mushrooms side. We really had a very pleasant evening and will be returning very soon.
Dined here on a Saturday night in the restaurant side. THE GOOD: the crab cakes, Roasted Asparagus, Cauliflower Gratin, and Banana Bread Pudding; THE MEDIOCRE: the waiter was really attentive initially but never inquired about my steak after delivering and didn't see him again until inquiring about dessert; THE BAD: my New York Strip was served medium well when I ordered medium rare. Frankly, the cooks didn't stand a chance because I cannot remember the last time I received that thinly sliced medium rare steak since that thin has no margin for error. Additionally, it didn't have a fat cap on it but instead the last 3" of one end was pure fat so it didn't even seem like a New York Strip. It was extremely noisy and we couldn't hear sitting across the table from each other and fortunately the 2 of us had a 4 top so we were able to sit side by side to to be able to hear. Other people in the restaurant section weren't dining and were loud like they were in a bar.
Always make a reservation! This place is delicious and gets busy quick. Their smoked old fashion is my absolute favorite and their wine list is great too. Steaks are always cooked to perfection, side dishes are included with your meal which is fantastic for a good steakhouse! 5 stars all day
Loved the food and atmosphere.
