Very comfortable atmosphere and delicious food!
Drinks were good but selection was average. Most cocktails weren’t much more complicated than what you could do at home. Most of the wines on the list could be found at most stores with a few exceptions. Entrees were tasty and good portions. Fried chicken was executed very well especially being gluten free. Lamp chop had a tasty chimichurri sauce. Starters seemed over priced and were just ok (charred cauliflower was not as fun as I thought). Most starters looked like they could be hard to share amongst a table. Would’ve skipped starters if I’d known.
We visited the new location of The Refinery, which is the old home of Fodder and Shine. While the new location is spacious and very nice, I must say that we missed the intimacy of the old location in the house. We didn't see any of the old staff that we had come to know over the years. The menu had some new items and was likely an attempt to recapture some of the magic from the James Beard nomination years. Though we will be back, we were not blown away by our dishes which included a grilled chicken leg with a sweet potato and black bean tostada wrapped in greens (good but not great) and the fish of the day (cobia) which was just ok. The wood roasted broccoli appetizer was very good. We will give The Refinery another chance as it has been a staple of ours for years. But we will miss the intimacy of its prior location. Oh well!
Food was delicious. As a vegetarian, I had a tough time picking from all the options. Please please please keep the veg options on the menu coming. Olivia was our server and she was incredible and very helpful in suggesting the right dishes.
The food is weird. If you like adventure and something unique that you have never had before then this is the place for you. But if you just like good food without the adventure this place is not for you. Used to be one of my favorite places. But things have changed and the menu is not for me anymore. Might be great for you just not for me.
Food was absolutely delicious. Had the chicken with Colcannon made with grits. It was amazing! Never had colcannon before so not sure what it's like with potatoes but it was amazing with grits. Great cocktails and wine list.
Disappointed that this restaurant replaced Fodder & Shine, and that they changed the Refinery menu. Sausage appetizer was good. Roasted cauliflower appetizer was too expensive for the modest portion served. I had the fried cornmeal coated chicken (on the bone). Breast was way over cooked...bit into the leg...raw in the middle! Bit into the thigh...raw in the middle. Wing was cooked fine. Greens were excellent. Maybe this was a bad night, but I was unimpressed. Did not even bother to send the food back to get cooked.
Brunch was delicious!
Great food and very cute inside. Only downfall is parking is limited
We sat at the bar, which is full service. The food was delicious! The service was terrible. There were four bartenders there that night and they spent more time talking with each other than they did paying attention to their patrons. One of them completely ignored us and walked past us multiple times and never offered as any type of service.
A food oasis in a bit of a good-food desert. This was the only restaurant with an imaginative menu that we found during our 6-day visit to Tampa. (Maybe there are others, but we didn't encounter them.)
Pricey for the size of the entrees. Took favorites like frito pie and chicken fried steak off menu. Limited menu and nothing caught my eye. Ordered the fish special , had dessert and left hungry.
Great ideas for fusion but missed the mark. Hoe cakes with kimchi and tempura beets were, in the end, dry corn cakes with a garnish that didn't synchronize, but rather, just sat on top. I imagine the cakes could have been less dry and lighter. Another element, something more sauce-oriented, would also have helped. The tempura beets were beautiful and nicely prepared but lacked seasoning so were bland to the taste. Szechuan okra likewise an interesting pairing of Asian/southern ingredients, but landed as a simple vegetable substitute that didn't expand the possibilities of the marriage of the two cuisines. Sweet but not spicy--an spin on Szechuan spices would have been nice. Overall, the creativity was much appreciated, but it needs to go the distance.
Got the fried chicken. Collared greens were great, chicken was good, however the cornbread was like eating sand. Very dry and brittle.
Overall cool spot, great cocktails, cool vibe. I'd come back and try something else.
This restaurant is closed and appears to have been closed for a while. I went to address on website. Abandoned building with a sign that they moved a few blocks. Went to second address and another abandoned building. So I am in a city I don't know, in a sketchy neighborhood with a hungry family. Can't believe you are listing this place and that they took a reservation. Shame on you
Had a great meal at The Refinery. Food was fantastic (BBQ Oyster Mushrooms over collard greens, Fettuccini Pomodoro , Meat Loaf, small plates, etc). The staff was super friendly and the vibe was great. The folks in my party eat out often and come from the 4 corners of the US. All were ecstatic about the dinner!
They ran out of most of the food and the things they had left were the items no one wanted to eat. Should have went somewhere else.
Food was good. Service was fair. Servers were nice and knew a lot about menu. However, restaurant was basically empty and took an hour to get our food. And 20 mins on drink refills.
First let me say that we enjoyed the experience and the food. We made reservations but still waited 30 minutes for our table. Service was very good although I ordered leeks and still got potatoes (albeit very tasty). The bacon on the big fat biscuit was undercooked, (zero crisp) and when I cut 1/4 of the biscuit to share with my daughter, the fried chicken wasn’t big enough to even get in that piece.
All in all, tasty and I will definitely return.
2nd time in and I dare say it was even better than anticipated. Brunch was fabulous, everyone enjoyed all their meals. The biscuit debris can’t be missed!
Hum? Well, in a nut shell; I think the cafeteria at an oil or gas refinery would have tasted better. OMG!! Our waitress took on too many tables and could not give us any practical or adequate service. We ordered a bottle of wine for our special romantic evening & had to pour it ourselves; because our waitress hardly ever came by. The appetizer was quite good. Dinner was COLD! and had very little taste. We would of said something but our waitress never came by except to see if we wanted any dessert. This is worst than a road side dinner. At least there the waitress comes by and one expects the food tastes taste bad. But I think a road side dinner would have tasted better; actually. The atmosphere was quite nice, like a country kitchen with wooden tables laid out in a 2 x 5 pattern. Actually quite cozy. But the lack of service, not very personable waitress as well as absent , cold food had made our visit unenjoyable. Therefore, we cannot recommend for anything but a pass-through for a meal that you do not expect to taste all that great and have to pay substantial money for. Cheers!
It was awesome....the food was great and the service was too.
First time dining here. Limited menu but excellent food. Super fresh. I had the steak special and my friend had the deluxe burger. They were both amazing. Staff was super nice. The space is also really cool. Looks like it use to be an old house. Will be back for sure.
Awesome food. Incredible service. Did not disappoint.
The food was excellent. I had the hamburger with peanut butter and whipped marshmellow and highly recommend it.
One of my favorite Seminole Heights restaurants--delicous dinner to share with friends. We were there the night after Valentine's, so the atmosphere was especially quiet. Great service: thanks, Leigh!
Went as a valentine date and it was perfect. Candle lit, soft music in the background, delicious food and wine. We really had a great time! I’m
Weve gone to the refinery on multiple occasions now either as a nice date or for special occasions with friends. The food is always an experience. Very creative tastes that are accessible even to an unsophisticated guy like me.
My only complaint is having to sit at a table on the roof-top section so close to another table that we couldn’t have a private conversation and neither could our neighbors
This place has a fantastic seasonal menu, extremely creative, very down to earth at home feeling. I go to all the restaurants in tampa, this is one of the very best.
Ahh, I had such high hopes for a true farm-to-table restaurant. I think the sourcing of ingredients is pretty high quality, but the menu is very limited. They seem to be afraid to really go for it and charge what they need to charge. There should be more descriptions of ingredients. Our waitress seemed to think it was okay to have us shouting down the table to her, instead of her walking around. The restaurant is not in the best part of town, but it is fine.
After just having a beet salad to die for at NYC's Gotham Bar and Grill, this one was simply adequate. The chicken wings were tasty, but very large and of unknown origin. The fish of the day was a bit dry. Two diners' coffee was "awful" . The bolognese had a "strange" flavor.
I think the concept is good: just charge what you need to charge for high quality and make it delicious.
As always, a great meal that was not too fancy but that I wouldn't cook at home, Lovely, fresh ingredients and great flavors. Perfect service. My only grumble would be that there always used to be an interesting sausage item on the menu and this was missing.
Particularly good - Merguez & Greens, Smoked Broccoli Lager Beer Cheese Soup and Tartine. Just great.
The food was not great. Our waitress just wanted us to move along and leave. I don’t have any idea why this place has such high ratings.
The food was fine. I would have preferred more of an entree selection. Great atmosphere and the wait staff was friendly.
Good food, solid service, nice ambiance- perfect for hosting some out of town friends for a fun and eclectic local spot.
The food was absolutely delicious! A fun, inexpensive and different date night. Service was a little slow but there it was crowded and there was a huge party in the same room. Will definitely be back.
This was our first time visiting The Refinery and being huge foodies from Los Angeles we often eat at new and up in coming resturaunts often. This place was Excellent! Although the menu is subject to change I highly recommend the heirloom tomato pie and braised pork shoulder. Wait staff was great and we even had a "Date Night Special" bottle of wine. When in Tampa this place is a MUST...
The food and service were great. Convenient to the Tampa airport, just a few minutes away.
This is not located within the most attractive section of Tampa, no water views, no pretty gardens. However, this is worth the trip if you love creative meals with farm fresh ingredients .
The service is top notch, very passionate and knowledgeable about their creations.
It was very quiet, but we were the first diners and only 2 other tables were occupied. Not sure on noise level if fully occupied.
Understanding it was a busy weekend it is not our problem that you do not have two of your five entree meals available. We wished to have an alternate to at least one meal choice. Especially as we did not have a seafood choice being so close to the ocean. That said, all choices made were cooked to perfection.
Appetizers and our main meals were great. On another note, while you can always live with a limited wine choice, our first red choice was also sold out. Again, when you have six choices you go “deep”! Service was great and their attention to detail throughout the meal was outstanding. All said and done, worth a second try as we know that gasparilla weekend combined with NHL All Star weekend will tax any local spot. Looking forward to the next visit to TAMPA!
