This was one of my favorite brunch spots in LA until recently. So many changes have happened that the service suffers. It’s still buffet style but there’s no more omelette station, you have to order omlettes, eggs Benedict and sliders from the waiter, which takes a very long time for it to come out. Also, if you want steamed crab or shrimp, you have to order it from the waiter as well. It seems like the new order of business is putting a lot of pressure of the waiters because they have poor management skills when it comes to putting in orders, refilling your champagne, clearing the table and everything else they do as waiters. They are no longer friendly the way I’m used to, they don’t seemingly like the new way of business and it’s spilling out into their customer service skills. We had 3 waiters yet were always flagging someone down to help us and when they finally did stop, they weren’t the nicest, as if we were bugging them. So. Back on my brunch hunt, the reef isn’t what it used to be.
Had brunch. Where do we start, had reservations but had to wait in the check in line for 20 minutes. They did seat us right away though when we were finally able to check in. Initial service at the bar was terrible. Waited for a large group to order and all we wanted was coffee. Asked two of the wait staff for coffee cups as the coffee was out already as complimentary. 1st waiter said we had to wait for the bartender, 2nd on accommodated us. When we got to our table, we had to ask numerous times for champagne and set up utensils. The food was just so so, couldn't get to the carving table for meats as the line was 30 people deep. The bill for 4 with 3 bloody marys for close to $400.00. Not worth it.
Mahi mahi dish was very good as were the crab cakes. Ceasar salad could have used a little less dressing and we wished lemons came with the fish dishes without having to ask. I could eat the clam chowder every day. No crackers came with the dish so save some table bread. Worked out great! Pineapple Express drink was quite good! Service super friendly!
Best view of the harbor with large windows.
Loved the 80's music!
Even on a weeknight, why was this place not busier!?
Freindly staff, great atmoshpere, and a variety food that everyone can enjoy. Very noisy... If you have a small party or sensitive to the noise level, I do not recommend sitting in the banquet room
The Reef has definitely changed since my last visit ordering system for omelette limited; server was very overwhelmed and visibly showed her frustration; and food was just blah. For the price, I could've gone elsewhere. I use to love this spot but now I dont care to go back.
Great location to the Queen Mary. Offers alternative dining with good food and good service.
Stumbled onto this gem. the food was excellent and the service superb. Whenever I return to the area I will be back.
View was nice
Go early or make a reservation, ppl were being turned away without a reservation on a busy brunch Sunday. I made a reservation for 11:45am didn’t arrive until 1:00 and I had a table waiting for me. Valet parking $4.50. Adult brunch $50.00 all you can eat buffet and bottomless mimosas. GET YOU MONEY’s WORTH!!! Eat all you can eat and drink all you can drink!!!!
Server wasn’t very attentive, still enjoyed the food and my time with my boyfriend.
It was my 93 year old grandmothers birthday, she enjoyed herself, but complained that they did not put any seasoning in the seafood water when they cooked, I agree everything needs a little more flavor, not salt. The over all experience was great, the layout and atmosphere pleasing and spacious, lively but comfortable, plenty off food for different taste.
Our waitress wasn't very good BUT a new hire named Richard who was working that section with her stepped up and took very good care of us SO THANK YOU RICHARD!!! Kudos.
Food was good, love that you can have your crab and shrimp heated up and seasoned. Mimosa's and Mai Tai were very good also.
My taste buds are still doing the happy dance! I’m not sure what these others reviews are for but we went for dinner and everything was superb. Best blackened Swordfish I’ve ever had. The service was absolutely excellent. We went for our anniversary, had a reservation and were seated within 5 minutes. Awesome place to celebrate with fantastic views! We will definitely return!
great view, great service, great food... would totally go back
I had reservations at 12:15 and waited 30 minutes until I was seated.
The food was great the wait for reservation was not long at all. How ever, the service was not good. Our server, Miriam, only came to our table once. The bussers were more attentive Than she was. We had to ask them for drinks and to order food from the kitchen.
Made reservations 2 months in advance but still made us wait for 20minutes. Receptionist was not friendly and accommodating (Feb 24 11am) . When I politely asked why we need to wait for 20mins despite having a reservation, she snottily replied, “ we have a lot of guests today and are busy and tables are not ready.” What’s the purpose of making reservations way in advance then? Food not worth the $50. Very little selection and food is not that good. Servers are not friendly. Also, our reservation was for 2 adults and 3 kids but when we asked for the check, we were charged 5 adults. Always make sure to check your bill before paying. Will not come back again.
Beautiful location and tasty meal. Went here with colleagues from work while at a conference in Long Beach, and it was perfect for a large group (with reservation). Ask for the upstairs room - it’s got a gorgeous view of downtown Long Beach. I had the Mahi-Mahi - very good.
A wonderful place to enjoy with your partner
We celebrated my husbands birthday. It was Presidents Day weekends and the wait was not very long. Dinner was delicious. Macadamia Nut Mahi mahi with rice, veggies and mango salsa...omg delicious.
Great experience, brunch was delicious and the service was excellent. Highly recommend
I've been coming twice a year for about (3) years. I do not like the time limit of (2) hours toneat6; especially when we have to place an order for certain items. The omelette you can now pick only (4) items now. All of our omelette orders were wrong and had to be made again; not a big deal, but when you're being rimednit is. The pasta station is gone ; now pasta is out there. I had to wait for pasta to be replaced. One of the pasta dishes had hair in it; I informed a waitress and she said she would take care of it; she did alright. She got a fresh pan of pasta and added the old pasta with the hair in it to the new pan. Omg!! Really? Yes!!
The ambiance at the Reef is always welcoming. However, there have been a few changes that have been made that are a turn off. The omelet station is gone. We ordered omelets from our server. We were only allowed four items to include in the omelet. There weren't as many choices as with the station. Shrimp, garlic and mushrooms were missing. The omelet appeared to be cooked on the grill versus in a pan. We went to the other stations while we were waiting for the omelets, but we sat for about 10 minutes before the food came out. I was there at 9:00 so it wasn't very crowded, but the service was slow. The steamed crab legs are now ordered from the server as well. I like choosing the legs myself (I don't the claws) and I like watching my omelet being made. The layout of the different stations was different but more efficient. They tried to keep most of the food in the dining area on one side of the room to minimize the guests at the tables from being disturbed by lines. I experienced delays with my kitchen orders at 9:00, I can only imagine how slow things will be with a typical full house. Lastly, I noticed that our servers were the same staff that previous poured our champagne. I'm not sure they're properly trained for their new role. I was disappointed.
Beautiful view, food not enough choices, overpriced. Food
We had a 45 minute wait on top of 30 mins for a waitress after we were seated several other groups came in were seated and servers faster and I was a party of 2
We were seated with a great view. The downside was we were next to the banquet room door which blasted loud music and cold air every time some had to go to the bathroom.
The food and service was subpar but the view was amazing. If you want a great view go here. Maybe it was an off night for the service and the food but it was enough that I don’t feel the need to re-evaluate it.
The food was outstanding as was the service and ambience. We sat at a window table in the bar. We got there too late to see the sunset, but the view of the city was magnificent at night. The bar was a bit noisy but the restaurant isn't. Finding the restaurant at night was a bit tricky especially since the GPS got a little confused. It is across the street from the Queen Mary. Valet parking is complimentary.
Overall, My wife And I enjoy the food. I would recommend this restaurant for any occasion.
The seafood collage and pasture chicken had a lot of flavor! We brought her own bottle so we simply paid the corkage fee. Their wines run a little expensive so we brought her own to bring down the cost of the bill. We were sat right away and had wonderful views of the water. Our server Miriam was very nice and attentive.
Valentine special night was average. We got put an a room where the walls were all white, the lighting was bright and there was alot of empty tables. All the guest we're being sat on one side of the room which made the room look empty. We saw some available seats in the main dining area, we asked if we can move they told us it was reserved but we had reserved seating as well so we didn't understand. Our server was good, nice man. The food was not that great, my wife had the seafood trio which she got sick from the next day. And I had the aged prime rib which the over cooked when asked for medium rare and over seared the outside. I tasted burnt crust outside. The only good item was the appetizer which was a clam chowder. In conclusion, I was kind of disappointed with the restaurant experience because of the hype that people would give me when asking about the restaurant.
I made reservations on valentine's day for my wife, my brother and sister in law, we were expecting a nice romantic ambience, we were not even seated inside restaurant, they in a bright small banquet room with with picnic tables and uncomfortable chairs, there was no privacy we were seated so close to all other couples and we can hear everyone's conversation, to the point where we had to be quite, frankly I was embarrassed,
Nicely treated by all staff members. Great seating. The rose for my wife was a nice touch.
Excellent atmosphere and service, exceptional and friendly server and maitre d' , very helpful, we really enjoyed our lunch. Will go again.
Pretty relaxed place to have dinner with a view. Took a date there. She was impressed! Would take another date again
Was seated 20 mins after our reservation wth no apologies. Insanely limited about of healthy options. Salad bar almost non existent and appears to be an after thought. The best thing was the view and the constant refill of champs
Our waiter was very nice and the food was delicious!
Augie daniel was an amazing server kept our drinks filled and checked up on is often to make sure we were enjoying ourselves!!!
Food was very good. They may have been understaffed because our order was quite simple but took quite awhile to come out. There were 4 events going on at the restaurant at the same time so maybe that was it. Great LB city/water views. Our table however, was right by a door that opened to one of the special events. Unfortunately, those people had to use this door to come and go if they needed to use the restroom or get a drink at the bar so therefore the higher mark on the noise level.
The food was delicious, everything went smoothly.
The view was amazing but I don't think the menu changes much. Was going to go to parkers lighthouse but the cost was more reasonable here. The waiter was great. The calamari was not very well fried and could have used a few more minutes. Everything else was very good. However the food is not that interesting. They should go over to James republic and taste what's farm-to-table and different flavors can offer. Maybe check out other gastronomy places are doing. Lola's, socialist, restoration, the attic and so many other restaurants and doing it better.
Food and ambiance was GREAT!
Waitress was not so great. We were never offered refills. I mentioned it was my husband's birthday and she didn't even acknowledge it. It seemed like she was upset. Didn't seem happy at all, all her questions were very monotone. She brought us the bill and asked if we wanted dessert when our meal included dessert. I asked her if the restaurant did anything for birthdays - her answer "just cheesecake" which she didn't even offer to bring. I also noticed she was extra helpful to other guests (american and Afro american) she just left us in the dark. Even the bussers and the hostesswere way friendlier and polite than her.At the end when she brought us a bag for our leftovers, she just said, again, very monotone "here is the cheesecake, i boxed it" she probably noticed that I was upset and brought it afterall.
I really wanted this my first experience there to be special due to that it was my husband's birthday but the waitress just ruined the occasion. :(
Other than that, everything was enjoyable and nice. The reservation was perfect and we got seated right away! Thanks OpenTable!
