Our first trip to Hawaii and the Reef Restaurant. Our choice for dinner our last night in HNL. What a wonderful surprise at the dining experience. It was wonderful!
My husband and I went one night while on holiday, the noise level was high, the menu was in such small writing, difficult to read as the lighting was so dim....the meal was average. Didn’t enjoy it at all.
When the Shorebird doors were closed they should have left them closed and not tried to recreate that experience, because this version is not it.
The setting is absolutely magnificent. The restaurant is beautiful the staff were friendly. The mai tai was very good and I got the Ahi skewers which were amazing! My friend had a steak which was beautifully cooked and nice quality. I was a little disappointed with the stuffed baked potato, the potato tasted like it had been baked several hours before and wasn't hot and Fluffy inside as I would like a potato to be. The salad bar was nice I would have liked a few more vegetable options besides lettuce variety. Overall it was an amazing experience and I would return again.
Ate here twice while staying at the hotel. Really a fun experience. They had an awesome local young artist paying guitar and doing amazing renditions of cover songs on Tuesday during happy hour. Both evenings had excellent service from a server named Reid. This young man will go places. Protein to put on the grill was better quality than I anticipated. No worries if you don’t want to grill it yourslf. The grill masters will take good care of you. The sunst view is the icing on the cake.
Its very similar to the former Shorebird, but the bar is in a better location now and right on the sea. It’s expensive, but the view is amazing. They have oysters now, which my husband loves! They still have grill your own meat too.
in this place you have the possibility to cook your meat.
for me isn't what I looking for in a restaurant is just my opinion
The portion was huge so if you are small eater, you might want to share the dish with your friend. Salad bar was great!
Two times in two days. Just keeps getting better and better. Food great Service was a wonderful experience.
This place used to be The Shore Bird. Cook your own food or have it cooked for you. The tables are right on the beach, wonderful view, great food and grand service.
They had a great rep and then it got weird. Someone dressed all the servers in strange non breathable Applebee’s /12.00 Ross clothes. Young cool people great attitude but what era? OMG get it together. Great view -and hard working staff and someone doesn’t get it. Bring back grilled pineapple and true fresh catch. Salmon only?
A hidden gem. Served by Jacob who friendly and attentive. Quality of cuts of meat exceptional. Kids had Burger and Chicken tenders - both licked the plates. Great location on the beach - will be back.
Great, fun experience. Very friendly staff. Excellent meat!
Reef restaurant has captured and built on all the magic history and great view plus superb steak and grill options I have enjoyed and introduced to my friends and workmates over the 30 years I have been dining ‘at 5he Shore Bird’.
Easy to reserv a table online and better now.. no karioke to annoy and distract.
Didn’t know we’d be cooking for ourselves so in my opinion it was little over priced for having to do most of the work haha. It was really good though. Worth it. Had a great time. Just didn’t read the part about cooking.
Enjoyed good food at a good price. Great view of the ocean and Diamond Head. Sevice was great and friendly and our waitress Amanda did an excellent job taking care of us. Thanks!
Staff was helpful in preparing our steaks and fish on the do-it-yourself grill. Service was excellent as always. Been great every time we’ve gone.
Not good. Meat is sub-par. Salad bar is iceberg lettuce and few options. Ahi poke was less than good. Add a highly overpriced price point and you have a recipe for disappointment. Basically, if you’re not a foodie and you’re a tourist looking for something to put in your belly then this is the place for you.
The salad for one guest was so late in coming out because of a mistake, but they compted it for us, which was nice. Great views. Great waiter, Justin.
Disappointed to be told even though I booked a while ago and requested a window I wasn’t guaranteed but the staff found 1
A 6pm booking and to be told they had run out of baked and mashed potatoes
The seafood was so overpriced for what you got
A nice touch at the end for the Birthday boy to be given a dessert
We had terrible service from the time we sat down (with reservations), cooking the food to paying the bill.
We loved going to Shore Bird... the Reef isn’t even comparable. Very overpriced, for what you get. Service wasn’t that good. Salad bar was disappointing. Definitely won’t be going back.
What can be said? This location is decidedly a step down from the former "Shore Bird" - but even the shore bird had its faults. This is ok to great when you factor in location and service.
The new brand/concept keeps many elements of the old but has made some clear cost cutting measures.
Our service staff was excellent - Rebekah did a terrific job - very attentive/efficient and genuinely kind. Junior at the grill was a gem also - very kind to my 6 year old who was helping grill - and attentive to the 4 parties (over 14 people) who were grilling all at once. I loved that did he not only ask but also checked (with thermometer) on the level of done-ness each guest wanted. Kudos to Junior for balancing a great personality, a great guest focus, and a great focus on food safety. They should probably give him another person to help watch the grill and aid guests- there is a lot to do.
The salad bar that accompanied the entree orders has taken a big step down from old concept. They have fewer choices overall and no bread or other side choices...the choice to make these menu side items makes sense economically but is a small let down.
The overall food quality is ok - I mean you prepare the protein so it is on you if you mess it up. The way you get the proteins to cook is different now - going to the counter and adding spices/rubs is novel and fun - arguably better than before - but I liked the old way (bringing it to the table and telling you how to prepare).
You can't beat the view, the value for the experience is ok (this is a tourist location), the service provided makes it all better - just wish they had kept a few more elements from the old concept in this new one.
We will return.
We used to go to Shore Bird 2-4 times a month. Always took family & visitors. This was our 1st time to the Reef. The drinks & steaks were very good and the rubs for the meats are excellent.
However, the salad bar was missing a lot of favorites. No bread or pineapple slices to grill. No red or purple potatoes and no garlic salt for the meats. Really missed these items. The salad items on the salad bar were fresh and the dressings were very good.
I believe some of the missing items were on the menu for an additional charge and this could add a lot to the total cost of the meal.
Before when we would arrive about 4:30 pm, there would be a long line and all tables would be full by 5:30 pm. We arrived about 5 pm and left about 6:30 pm and the tables were only half full.
We must not be the only ones that feel a lot of local food items are missing and the prices are higher than when it was the Shore Bird. Will probably try one more time before we decide if this will be our favorite eating place for family & visitors.
The worse night out we have had in Waikiki and we have been coming here for over 30 years. We booked online and secured our table - we received 3 emails and a text message to confirm. We arrived at the restaurant and there was no booking for us!
The atmosphere was awful - loud, cheap and casual. The prices charged at this place do not reflect the style of establishment!
So aside from not having our booking (even tho I showed them 3 emails & text confirmation!) We had to wait 45 minutes for a table when we arrived!!!
No complimentary drink, no assistance and no discount off our meal - the 3 women on the front of house were so rude!
Our server was nice enough but was literally running around the restaurant as she was looking after all tables on her own!!
They had run out of the 3 different entrees we wanted and were left with oysters that tasted awful and garlic bread that could have been bought from a discount store.
The proteins were good - steak was nice and the fish was good.
The salad bar was worse than awful - there was hardly anything left for us to eat and when we asked for 2 salads to be replenished because they were empty, we were told there was no more!!!
What type of restaurant in Honolulu charges over $40 for a steak and sends guests to the “salad bar” to get their own sides.
The pasta salad was literally a bucket of mayonnaise on pasta - awful. And everything else looked like it had been sitting out on the table all day long to melt and wilt - Terrible.
The website and Instagram account of this restaurant show an upmarket, beachside restaurant, revamped in the recently closed Shorebird... little did we know, it would be in the old, dingy pub that we visited many years ago for a pint and a sing of karaoke!
The promotion and website of this restaurant is deceiving - if you like a Caffeteria meal and willing to pay $, then this is for you.
We wasted nearly $200 for a special occasion dinner - you should be ashamed.
We went to Mother’s Day brunch and we were overwhelmed by the outstanding service. Our wait staff was more than attentive and friendly. The view- outstanding, fun time for us all
Be ready to cook your own food, not joking
