The salad for one guest was so late in coming out because of a mistake, but they compted it for us, which was nice. Great views. Great waiter, Justin.
Disappointed to be told even though I booked a while ago and requested a window I wasn’t guaranteed but the staff found 1
A 6pm booking and to be told they had run out of baked and mashed potatoes
The seafood was so overpriced for what you got
A nice touch at the end for the Birthday boy to be given a dessert
We had terrible service from the time we sat down (with reservations), cooking the food to paying the bill.
We loved going to Shore Bird... the Reef isn’t even comparable. Very overpriced, for what you get. Service wasn’t that good. Salad bar was disappointing. Definitely won’t be going back.
What can be said? This location is decidedly a step down from the former "Shore Bird" - but even the shore bird had its faults. This is ok to great when you factor in location and service.
The new brand/concept keeps many elements of the old but has made some clear cost cutting measures.
Our service staff was excellent - Rebekah did a terrific job - very attentive/efficient and genuinely kind. Junior at the grill was a gem also - very kind to my 6 year old who was helping grill - and attentive to the 4 parties (over 14 people) who were grilling all at once. I loved that did he not only ask but also checked (with thermometer) on the level of done-ness each guest wanted. Kudos to Junior for balancing a great personality, a great guest focus, and a great focus on food safety. They should probably give him another person to help watch the grill and aid guests- there is a lot to do.
The salad bar that accompanied the entree orders has taken a big step down from old concept. They have fewer choices overall and no bread or other side choices...the choice to make these menu side items makes sense economically but is a small let down.
The overall food quality is ok - I mean you prepare the protein so it is on you if you mess it up. The way you get the proteins to cook is different now - going to the counter and adding spices/rubs is novel and fun - arguably better than before - but I liked the old way (bringing it to the table and telling you how to prepare).
You can't beat the view, the value for the experience is ok (this is a tourist location), the service provided makes it all better - just wish they had kept a few more elements from the old concept in this new one.
We will return.
We used to go to Shore Bird 2-4 times a month. Always took family & visitors. This was our 1st time to the Reef. The drinks & steaks were very good and the rubs for the meats are excellent.
However, the salad bar was missing a lot of favorites. No bread or pineapple slices to grill. No red or purple potatoes and no garlic salt for the meats. Really missed these items. The salad items on the salad bar were fresh and the dressings were very good.
I believe some of the missing items were on the menu for an additional charge and this could add a lot to the total cost of the meal.
Before when we would arrive about 4:30 pm, there would be a long line and all tables would be full by 5:30 pm. We arrived about 5 pm and left about 6:30 pm and the tables were only half full.
We must not be the only ones that feel a lot of local food items are missing and the prices are higher than when it was the Shore Bird. Will probably try one more time before we decide if this will be our favorite eating place for family & visitors.
The worse night out we have had in Waikiki and we have been coming here for over 30 years. We booked online and secured our table - we received 3 emails and a text message to confirm. We arrived at the restaurant and there was no booking for us!
The atmosphere was awful - loud, cheap and casual. The prices charged at this place do not reflect the style of establishment!
So aside from not having our booking (even tho I showed them 3 emails & text confirmation!) We had to wait 45 minutes for a table when we arrived!!!
No complimentary drink, no assistance and no discount off our meal - the 3 women on the front of house were so rude!
Our server was nice enough but was literally running around the restaurant as she was looking after all tables on her own!!
They had run out of the 3 different entrees we wanted and were left with oysters that tasted awful and garlic bread that could have been bought from a discount store.
The proteins were good - steak was nice and the fish was good.
The salad bar was worse than awful - there was hardly anything left for us to eat and when we asked for 2 salads to be replenished because they were empty, we were told there was no more!!!
What type of restaurant in Honolulu charges over $40 for a steak and sends guests to the “salad bar” to get their own sides.
The pasta salad was literally a bucket of mayonnaise on pasta - awful. And everything else looked like it had been sitting out on the table all day long to melt and wilt - Terrible.
The website and Instagram account of this restaurant show an upmarket, beachside restaurant, revamped in the recently closed Shorebird... little did we know, it would be in the old, dingy pub that we visited many years ago for a pint and a sing of karaoke!
The promotion and website of this restaurant is deceiving - if you like a Caffeteria meal and willing to pay $, then this is for you.
We wasted nearly $200 for a special occasion dinner - you should be ashamed.
We went to Mother’s Day brunch and we were overwhelmed by the outstanding service. Our wait staff was more than attentive and friendly. The view- outstanding, fun time for us all
Be ready to cook your own food, not joking
Not a place I will reserve again. Steakhouse prices bit you cook it yourself. If you want them to cook it add $15 per person.
Cooking your own food? Dumb concept. Food awful for the price. Skip
Wonderful view of the Waikiki sunset. Very friendly staff and a nice buffet. There was a carving station with very tasty selections.
Awesome food...we did the dinner buffet because the grill was not operable. I love cooking here for the sunset and the food. I'll be back!
Have eaten here before when it was the Shore Bird. The grill was either not working or not completed, not sure which one. We should have looked at the buffet before we sat down or should have left when we saw it for the price they were charging. The salad and food was half the selection from in the past under previous ownership and quality was lacking. Never eat here again. Very disappointed!
Made a booking online, said we needed a high chair. From the moment we walked in the entrance, the unenthusiastic looking lady at the desk made it seem like she did not have any interest in our reservation. Walked us to our table and I reminded her that we requested a high chair. She mumbled that she would get one, walked away and never came back.
Our food waiter was pleasant but was beyond slow. We asked for the bill, got it. Went to pay by card and it took him literally 15min to come back to us. We had 3 young restless children with us. Anyone working a restaurant understands that we are the group to take care of and move on as quickly as possible. Whilst we had been waiting, I observed 6 other bar/wait staff standing around chatting, not observing us or any other customers.
The food was absolutely disgusting. Earlier in the week we had eaten at Duke's. Honestly, the food at the Reef grill is sub standard. The beef on the surf and turf bowl was that stringy it could not be chewed. The prawns were undercooked. The salad bar was less than average and definitely not worth the money.
On leaving, I mentioned that we had travelled to Hawaii on 4 occasions over the past 10 years and eaten at countless restaurants on all of the islands. The experience at Reef grill was by far the WORST that we have ever had. The lady at the counter had no response.
It was such a shame because the last time we ate here and used the grill we thought it was a great place.
Obviously the outlook and location is fantastic but honestly, don't waste your time here when there are hundreds of better atmosphere, quality dining experiences available in Waikiki.
The only positive was the clean up waiter who did his job politely and was professional.
Based on our meal on April 4th I would not recommend it to anyone.
They usually have a grill where you cook your own steaks.
It was broken so they offered a buffet.
The food was terrible except for the salad bar.
Also not cheap at $38/person.
Wish we would have gone anywhere else.
The only option for dinner was a buffet. NOT the menu listed here. The best part of the buffet was the mashed potatoes. Braised short rib was ok, shrimp were chewy, steak kebabs cold. We were looking forward to cooking our own meats and ordering a Keiki meal for each kid. No Keiki meals available and obviously no steaks to grill. Service was good. Drinks mediocre. Very disappointing overall. Very expensive for the quality of food.
For an Easter Brunch, the quality and variety of the food presented was average. Prime rib and ham were excellent. I guess this was related to the price-point. Breakfast items were okay and basic. Benedict's were dry and no hollandaise. Unfortunately, the cupcake decorating table was only open from 10:00 to 11:00, which didn't work with our 11:00 reservation. The ambiance and views were outstanding and the service was great. All staff were pleasant, attentive, and available. Overall, the setting made up for the average food quality.
Generally great beach views, sophisticated staffs, and quality meals.
Only choice was buffet with excellent foods of choice. A bit expensive if you cannot eat a lot. There was a delay in serving meats, which quality was excellent, though.
We were looking for a beachfront restaurant for dinner and to watch the sunset and found the Reef on Open Table. It was a terrific experience and the food and drinks were great. Our server, Phil, was awesome and even shared the ingredients for a cocktail that we had never had before. We ended up coming back on our way to the airport for one last bite and a drink. Outstanding!
The salad bar was a pleasant surprise. Not enough seafood on the menu. Meat items were very good.
Slow service, food wait was extremely long, wrong order came out and was not fixed by staff, steak tasted burned, and when we asked for the bill the waitress took so long to come back we had to get up and look for her.
Family visiting from the mainland. Server and assistants provided excellent service. The salad bar was extensive and fresh. The meat and fish were restaurant quality. One of the best ocean views in Waikiki. The sunset was spectacular (nice applause from diners when the sun dipped over the horizon)
Very disappointing to see the new ownership of what was previously the Shorebird Grill for decades.
Service was horrible, table waiter was not very engaging, disappeared at times. Buffet salad bar was disappointing to what it used to be as Shorebird and expensive, hot buffet was also limited to tasteless ravioli and limited selective of a spicy fish. Sure miss the Shorebird for much better value. So sad to see the downhill slide of what WAS a favourite eatery
Very good experience really friendly and professional staff enjoyed the food excellent
Great buffet breakfast and ocean views.
Great Service by our Server Philipp.
Our first time to at the your restaurant to celebrate Valentines Day Dinner.
Entire Valentine's Menu menu was excellent. Beautiful view & serene ambience.
We will definitely return to the Outrigger.
Casey & Esther
The Reef doesn’t seem to be trying too hard to be like its former iteration. The cuts of meat remain great. Unfortunately the salad bar was mediocre and the service was lacking. Great location.
We were here 11 years ago when we renewed our vows and went back now. Great brunch. Great view Great service.
Gorgeous location! Service and food fine, ample space on the grill.
Thoroughly enjoyed this experience. The food was great and the service phenomenal. It’s right on the beach with a lovely atmosphere.
It had been 5 years since our last time in Waikiki and before we had been going to the Shorebird restaurant. The Reef has since taken over and the place has been updated very nicely. My steak was great but my wife’s fish was very bland and over cooked even with the chefs help. I think he just had too many guests and could have used help like in the old days the Shorebird had several helpers or Chefs back by the grill. We would go again when we return to Hawaii just due to the view from this restaurant one of the best ever for a sunset meal.
Pricey for the quality of food. The salad bar was just average and the watermelon salad was tasteless. The soup we thought was salty.
