About The Red Lion Inn

Since welcoming its first guests in 1773, The Red Lion Inn has earned a reputation for outstanding food and genuine country hospitality. Those traditions are continued today by Executive Chef Brian J. Alberg, whose kitchen features contemporary cuisine that is rooted in the region's history and harvests. Emphasizing the use of fresh, local ingredients and a huge proponent of buying locally and sustaining the region, Chef Alberg regularly updates the Inn's menus to reflect the bounty of each season. Guests choose from the elegant Main Dining Room, the cozy Widow Bingham's Tavern, the casual Lion's Den pub, or, in warmer months, the flower-filled Courtyard. The wine list offers 450+ selections, and has received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for ten consecutive years; Sommelier Dan Thomas helps pair wines with meals. *The Inn accepts reservations for the Main Dining Room only.

My wife and I traveled from NJ to stay at the Inn and celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary there. The stay was more than pleasant even in November, and we enjoyed the proximity to local museums and turn of the century mansions to visit. The Inn is a serene place to stay overnight, with excellent dining and very attentive staff. The big surprise was the heated outdoor pool, open even in November! We would return with or without an excuse!

The Red Lion is always a good time. The salad special was creative. Although the duck leg was tasty, the pasta side was overcooked. The pork chop was very good.

Our dinner reservations were for 5:30pm on a Saturday evening. We were seated once they opened at 5:30pm and our waitress was a sweet girl. Unfortunately, we did not receive our meal until 7:00pm - that is 1.5 hours later! AND when we finally received our meals (and they expensive), our meals were cold. Our waitress tried to make it up to us by forgiving our bar charges - which was sweet of her - BUT STILL! Who travels from CT to MA for a bad meal?

it was very nice, quiet, antique looking with a great history. My only complaint (if that is what you want to call it), was that the prime rib was bland. Cooked perfectly, but needed seasoning, which is really based on individual taste.

The presentation of the Arctic Char dish seemed to be upside down. The aioli sauce was on the bottom, followed by a chewy swiss chard, then the arctic char with skin side up. The meal tasted okay otherwise. Presentation is everything, especially when paying high prices for a small amount. We loved the atmosphere and our waitress, Dorothy.

Our meal was very good. My husband had a turkey dinner that was like a Thanksgiving feast. I had the scallops and although they were delicious, there were only 3 scallops. No salad or vegetable was offered either. I thought $32 for 3 scallops and no side dishes was expensive.

We have visited the Red Lion Inn for many years and have never been disappointed. This time we spent just an overnight there, but were able to enjoy a fine dinner and breakfast. The food is consistently good (with lots of local produce) and the service is friendly and low-key. The menu features standard New England fare with nothing particularly daring or innovative--just right for a guy like me.

Lovely dining room. Extensive wine list. Crisp white tablecloths with pewter charger plates and a small lamp. So peaceful and relaxing. Bread with whipped butter, the prime rib was excellent with a popover and green beans and mashed potatoes. Char with mushrooms was very good. The Red Lion Inn is one of the nicest places I have been.

Great place, but not a fan of new dinner menu, no chicken or pasta option. Also, miss Lavash crackers and muffins in bread basket.

The restaurant was fairly busy, but our server was not friendly and it was very hard to get his attention. We were shown outside to our table by the host and our table was already occupied, so we had to wait for another table to be set. Once we were seated we waited over 15 minutes for our server to even bring us a menu. At one point, another customer went inside to get his attention for us and he rolled his eyes at her. I had to send my salad back and while he did offer to have it remade and took it off the bill, he just seemed bothered the entire time we were there.

As for the food, the soup was barely warm and my salad was soaked with dressing so I had to send it back. The fries on my nieces burger were amazing, but the burger itself came with the incorrect type of cheese and was bland. I remember my grandmother bringing me several years ago, and that's the reason I want back, but after this experience, I can't say I'll ever return.

The Red Lion is a must stop when in Stockbridge Mass or anywhere near there. The food is consistently excellent. The ambiance is class from A-Z. We have always enjoyed the special historical experience dining here. AN elegant dining experience well worth the visit.

Chicken pot pie was fantastic, but the chicken pillard was over cooked, dry and tasteless! The potatoes weren’t very flavorable either. Wait staff was not attentive and meal was served before we finished our soup. Had to wave him down to order another drink, then for coffee and finally the check! Nice at atmosphere and quaint Inn and town.

Went there on friend's recommendation. Nice old rustic inn for sure. Made reservations on line for a Sunday lunch at 12:30. We were promptly seated at a table for two. I was out with my wife on an wedding anniversary get away.
Limited lunch menu. My Wife ordered the grass fed beef burger done medium well....it came in at a low end of medium and a little too "red" for her liking.
I had the clam chowder (excellent choice) with the fish and chips. I can't say I was impressed with the two thin pieces of breaded fish I was served for $24.00. Presentation was nice but the meal was lacking. I've had better fish and chips at our local pub on a Friday night than what I received at the Red Lion....for about half the price. It seemed to be run of the mill, processed fish rather than the fresh, flakey, full sized filet that I'm use too.
Our server Han, was excellent and was prompt with refilling water, our beverages, serving our meal and answering any questions we had about the menu.
We didn't get the "WOW" factor that we were expecting, but the restaurant had nice ambiance, the service was great, the menu selection was OK, meal presentation was as expected for what we were anticipating but the quality of the meal for the price was a little disappointing.
Maybe the dinner format is a little better, but from what we experienced at lunch; along with the prices, would make me hesitant on taking the chance on another mediocre meal at the Red Lion Inn.

The Red Lion is on everyone's list, I believe, for an autumn visit and a trip to the Norman Rockwell Museum about a mile away. The restaurant is classic New England, down to the funky old wallpaper, the myriad of knick-knacks and the crooked paintings on each wall.

The dining experience was more contemporary. The food was well prepared and attractively served. The service was wonderful and the staff was friendly and attentive. We will have a fond memory of our time spent there.

When you are at the Red Lion Inn you can easily imagine that you were dining there 75 years ago as much as in the present. The place exudes old school charm in historic Stockbridge. Food quality is excellent (wife and I had the chicken pot pies for lunch.....they were delicious). While no one will mistake the Red Lion Inn for a snooty upscale (and expensive) restaurant you will dine well in a charming atmosphere rich with history.

Service was a tad slow on our recent Saturday visit and our server was challenged to keep things moving in a crowded dining room. It was 70 F in late October. How often does that happen in the Berkshires in autumn? Everyone was out and about enjoying the day and the food and ambiance at the Red Lion Inn.

We had a pleasant lunch with family. The atmosphere is delightful. The ambience of the old inn is quaint and charming. Service was good. The food was average and overpriced though the butternut squash soup was delicious and the desserts were great. The Inn was full and bustling that day.

The food was good at two dinners and one breakfast. And good amounts of food as well. But there must be a problem in the kitchen. All three meals during a 4 day stay resulted in extremely long waits. The waiters appear to be covering too many tables but still did a good job. But the delays from the kitchen were extreme.

I have been at this restaurant at least a dozen times and this visit was the worst for service received. The waitress had no system for providing service. After sitting for 5 minutes at the table, she brought over a bread basket and didn't even ask about drinks. It was 10 more minutes before she asked about our order. Another waitress in our area was very organized and served her customers well. Wish she was at our table.

Dinner at The Red Lion Inn is an "experience" --not just a meal! The dining is fine, and the service is exceptional. We always stop at least once when we're in Stockbridge. The Lion's Den is also an interesting venue on the weekend with local musicians in attendance. Try it; you'll like it!

Got a lousy table by the restroom hallway, food was only marginally warm and the turkey entree had all the flavor of a TV dinner. When I complained to the waiter about the temperature he said he could have heated it up for me - unfortunately it was half gone by the time he checked on us. The bottom line - this dining experience was of low quality and grossly overpriced!

This is our second visit to the Red Lion Inn for a meal. The Berkshires is beautiful in Autumn and Stockbridge is a nice quaint town to take a stroll and enjoy the scenery. The staff at the Red Lion Inn is very accommodating. We were glad that we made a reservation as the wait would have been lengthy. They have a wonderful porch with rocking chairs where you can enjoy the surrounding and watch the people going buy. The gourmet soup was fantastic, and the special of the day for lunch was Sole with mash potatoes and French beans which went down so easily. We even had room for desert; which was warm apple pie made locally topped with vanilla ice cream. Yes, we did have to walk it off.

Despite the fact that I made the reservation about three weeks in advance through Open Table and had the confirmation email with me, the greeter insisted we had no reservation. I had also indicated when I made the reservation that this lunch was in celebration of our anniversary. After my insistence that we be seated, they finally placed us by the greeter station, which provided an atmosphere in which diners waiting to be seated later hovered over our table throughout our lunch. Needless to say we will never return to the Red Lion based on the completely uncaring and rude reception we received. I also will heneforth make any restaurant reservation directly and will not rely upon Open Table.
