About The Red Lion Inn
Since welcoming its first guests in 1773, The Red Lion Inn has earned a reputation for outstanding food and genuine country hospitality. Those traditions are continued today by Executive Chef Brian J. Alberg, whose kitchen features contemporary cuisine that is rooted in the region's history and harvests. Emphasizing the use of fresh, local ingredients and a huge proponent of buying locally and sustaining the region, Chef Alberg regularly updates the Inn's menus to reflect the bounty of each season. Guests choose from the elegant Main Dining Room, the cozy Widow Bingham's Tavern, the casual Lion's Den pub, or, in warmer months, the flower-filled Courtyard. The wine list offers 450+ selections, and has received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for ten consecutive years; Sommelier Dan Thomas helps pair wines with meals. *The Inn accepts reservations for the Main Dining Room only.

According to tradition, some of the Inn's first guests were colonial Yankees who met here in 1773 to defy King George III-with revolutionary results. There is ample parking behind the Inn, but guests may also park out front (no overnight parking on Main Street in the winter!).
Several bus lines get folks to the Berkshires -- Peter Pan and its affiliates stop across the street from the Red Lion. There is public transportation in the Berkshires through the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority.

The service was very slow at diner and at breakfast. While the food in general was good, I had ordered the scallops and they were overcooked and very chewy. For the cost of the meal I would have expected it to be perfectly done. Breakfast was very good and worth the cost.
We had a delightful lunch in the main dining room, seated by the window. So glad we made a reservation as it was crowded on a Friday. Food was spectacular except for the apple pie, the crust was rubbery. We both loved the butternut squash soup. Soup with a sandwich for one and a delicious salad with salmon for the other on a cold day was perfect. Service was attentive and friendly. We enjoyed the Christmas decorations inside the dining room and outside our window. The food is expensive, the ambiance is lovely.
Got snowed out for out Christmas day plans, and decided to try Red Lion Inn the next day. It was very festive and really right for what we were looking for. The server we had was very good ad made us feel really welcome. The menu had good choices and both of us really liked what we ordered. It was the perfect spot for a Christmas lunch. Will definitely remember and come again.
The menu and food are simply classic earlier American fare. There is no attempt to concoct a "different" take on standard recipes, which is refreshing nowadays. Service is excellent and relatively fast. Ambiance is outstanding, even though Christmas Eve day was very crowded. My wife and I love the Red Lion Inn and come here at least once a year (over an hour drive). It is the epitome of good food prepared well and served well in a historic and well-maintained inn. I might also mention that the turkey dinner never disappoints.
Honestly, we were very disappointed and will need to break the tradition of dining at The Red Lion Inn each Christmas Eve day. First, waiting to be seated at noon, it got very crowded in the entrance area. Second, we were seated at the second round table, which was cold and drafty. We were not given bread until we asked for it. Next, and worst of all, none of us was happy with the food. The quality was not good, the Quiche tasted odd and it was not hot and creamy as it usually is. The side salad was too drenched in dressing and the chicken pot pie was cold We were very disappointed as usually it is quite a treat to eat there. Normally we have had a wonderful, special occasion/tradition. Unfortunately we will be booking somewhere else next year.
Soak in the history! This authentic 1773 coaching inn is in the center of Stockbridge's Main Street. The main dining room is cheery. Traditional dishes are ably prepared. There is a well stocked wine cellar. The friendly and skilled wait staff will keep you comfortable. No surprises on the menu, but it is a great place to linger on a cold winter day. Clam Chowder, Chicken Pot Pie, Beer Battered Haddock, Pot Roast-you get the picture. Oldies and goodies enhanced by carefully sourced local ingredients.
We ordered the prime rib , it was tough and had been heated in a microwave. I have never paid that much money for a meal that was by far one of the worst I have eaten. The objective is to serve quickly and not be concerned with quality. My wife and I were extremely disappointed and put a damper on the evening.
the Inn is beautiful, historic, quaint, and was fabulously decorated for the holidays . they had a harpist in the lounge! The food did not all live up to its billing. the pasta was bland and the pork had a sauce on top that clashed with the root veggies under. Excellent desserts.
I’m afraid that this longstanding New England gem, is in need of some updating. The beautiful antiques need some TLC. Rugs and curtains look a bit weather beaten. We shared a salmon risotto app which was absolutely delicious. We both got prime rib, which unfortunately was quite bland. Lots of salt/pepper required. The sides were served at room temp which was disappointing. The saddest part was that I had requested a surprise birthday dessert for my husband, and despite my “eye contact” with the waiter when he inquired about dessert, it did not come. They forgot it.
Quality of the food was hit or miss with our group of 6. Chicken Pot Pie was good. Open faced Roast beef sandwiches were terrible. Meat was dry and tough. Squash Bisque was excellent but Clam Chowder was more like Potato Soup. The waitress was very poor. The soup was delivered with the main course and she set the soup bowls in the middle of the table where people could not reach them. She dropped the crackers for the soup on the floor and did not bring replacements and she slopped coffee all over the saucer when setting the cup down. She did not mop it up or even apologize. The waitress was very friendly, she just was not very good at serving customers. It seems like the place is starting to go downhill.
I fell in love with the Red Lion Inn when I attended a wedding reception there a couple of years ago.
It is so cozy and comfortable, the food is fantastic, the staff is friendly and accommodating, and I absolutely love the atmosphere.
My friends and I just had lunch there on Saturday. Love it. I will definitely be back.
I've been to the Red Lion several times, both for dining and for hotel stays. This trip was just for lunch, and the meal was not up to the normal quality I've found on other visits. Maybe it was because it was over the busy Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The mussels are definitely not up to Red Lion standards. I'm actually surprise that they are on the menu - they don't seem consistent with the kind of food you would find at an old inn, and we would not order them again. I will continue to visit the Red Lion, though. It's a wonderful place.
My wife and I traveled from NJ to stay at the Inn and celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary there. The stay was more than pleasant even in November, and we enjoyed the proximity to local museums and turn of the century mansions to visit. The Inn is a serene place to stay overnight, with excellent dining and very attentive staff. The big surprise was the heated outdoor pool, open even in November! We would return with or without an excuse!
Our dinner reservations were for 5:30pm on a Saturday evening. We were seated once they opened at 5:30pm and our waitress was a sweet girl. Unfortunately, we did not receive our meal until 7:00pm - that is 1.5 hours later! AND when we finally received our meals (and they expensive), our meals were cold. Our waitress tried to make it up to us by forgiving our bar charges - which was sweet of her - BUT STILL! Who travels from CT to MA for a bad meal?
