We were hoping it would rival former restaurant in Wakefield Scearce. Never wrote a bad review in our lives but it was terrible. We eat out a lot and it was the worst we can remember. We hate to say that as we were hoping the best for you. The crowd pretty much says it all, only a couple other tables occupied on Sunday lunch.
Great food Great atmosphere
We are repeat visitors to The Red Lion, and for good reason. The food, drinks, and ambience consistently exceed expectations.
We wanted a historic environment with a story as our ambience for the evening with an unique menu. Hit all marks
Highly recommend!! Not only the restaurant but the amazing building itself! It is a must see tour of antiques!!!
We had a super night at the Red Lion! Particular kudos to our wonderful server, Liz. We also got to meet Brian, the owner (I believe) and he was a great guy! Get out and support this great, local, veteran-run business.
We had the pretzel beer cheese and bing bang shrimp apps which were amazing. Burgers were delicious and kid’s chicken fingers were legit hand battered and fried- not typical frozen “chicken” fingers.
The Red Lion at Science Hill is delightful! We visited for brunch and enjoyed every moment. Our meal was lovely and so good! The cocktails were unique and interesting. We can’t wait to go back and enjoy the beautiful outdoor setting!
Friendly helpful staff. Great Saturday brunch menu. The loaded Bloody Mary was superb.
We had a lovely ladies brunch on a Saturday. We hadn’t been here in 13 years, also for a midday meal, and we were pleasantly pleased at the updates to the restaurant and the menu. We did the short drive in from Louisville to visit the restaurant, taking the scenic route down Shelbyville Road in order to see the beautiful horse farms along the route. Once there, we discovered the quiche was utterly delicious, as was my friend’s BLT sandwich. The mimosa was a good basic cocktail, and the summery gin cocktail I had was quite refreshing. We’ll definitely go back again. Wonderful addition to the limited Shelbyville scene.
The staff was wonderful and made the experience very pleasant, the food was equally on par.
The Red Lion is an historic gem in Shelbyville! We loved the food and the ambiance.
Service & food excellent!
We had a delicious lunch with friends. The salmon croquettes and Cuban sandwiches were terrific. We plan to make this a regular place to meet up.
We had a reservation on the patio for a double date night. They seem very understaffed, we waited for 20 minutes while they figured out the tables and then another 40 before we got our drinks. The server was friendly, just very overwhelmed - we think she was the only one running food to the entire place. The food and cocktails were fantastic and the patio is a nice place to have a casual dinner. We would go back again, just be prepared for a very long wait.
Love this place. The food is always good and staff very accommodating. It’s a must place to eat in Shelbyville, Ky
The food was amazing, but the service was a little spotty. Also, they were out of/couldn’t offer about 25% of their menu. But the food we were able to order was absolutely delicious.
Delicious food and quick service. Mojito was the best in town and the strawberry rhubarb cobbler was incredible. Will be back!
I would definitely recommend. Service was fast, food was very good, and the atmosphere was relaxing. The restaurant is in a quaint, historic building with lots of character.
As always, Red Lion did not disappoint . The food was delicious and the service was friendly and efficient. The menu has variety and options for those with special dietary needs. The manager stopped by to make sure everything was satisfactory and spoke to us as we left. I would recommend Red Lion and will definitely be returning.
Wonderful dinner in old world splendor.
Appetizers were great, however the main course (chicken bacon Florentine was a 2 and the shrimp and grits were a 4) was subpar. Drinks were very strong (which is saying a lot for this bourbon loving family). Service was great.
Hugh disappointment from previous ambiance.
Servers wore street clothes to serve in an elegant dining room with white table cloths. Matching tee shirts or matching polos would have boosted the ambiance. The music was unnecessary and delivered over poor speakers. Music detracted from the beautiful setting and hindered conversation.
I don’t plan to return unless changes are made to deliver ambiance comparable to the prices on their menu.
Our waitress Erica made a great impression from the start and we really enjoyed a wonderful anniversary dinner at this local spot. A great combination of historic ambience, friendly staff and really tasty food. The braised short ribs and risotto hit the spot. We are already planning a next visit. In a couple of weeks.
I was absolutely blown away! I couldn’t have been more pleased with our seating. Outdoors, tucked away in an almost secret garden, we were promptly greeted and seated. Sunset and the nice breeze followed by immediate service and friendly staff, set the tone of what was to come. The appetizers were absolutely delicious. The caramelization of the pork belly combined with perfectly crisped Brussel sprouts put the small plate on my list of future must haves. The Tomahawk steak was seasoned and cooked to perfection. I generally veer away from ordering a tomahawk out, due to the inconsistency of cooking. The previous courses assured me they could handle it and I have never had better. After dinner cocktails were on point. I absolutely loved the suggestions we were given and the attention to detail as to what we had previously eaten in response to what would properly please our pallets next. Desserts were absolutely delicious and the prefect ending to such a fabulous meal. My husband and I are big foodies, we basically ordered the entire menu and nothing was lacking. From the beverage manager to the wait staff, everyone, exceeded my expectations. Despite the restaurant being slammed, we were greeted and attended to as if we were the only couple there. A true team of professionals. The best part….. this all happened in SHELBYVILLE, KY. Big city experience in the comfortable walls of our small home town. We literally devoured everything!
We had a such a great date night at The Red Lion. The food was delicious! I highly recommend sitting outside. The patio area has a nice breeze and plenty of shade. You can relax while admiring the flowers, and court yard. Even the aged brick is so beautiful. If you like shrimp I suggest you get the Big Bang Boom Shrimp. The portion is enough to share with 2-3 people and the sauce the shrimp is tossed in is delicious. You won’t regret choosing this restaurant — branch out, support a small business and enjoy your night.
Delicious Filet, cooked perfectly. Amazing signature cocktails. Attentive staff always
Food was excellent; would like to see a better wine menu.
Food was tasty, portions were reasonable but not large. Apparently the only soft drink they have is Pepsi. My son asked for Dr Pepper and Mt Dew, the server said they had neither. The availability of a gluten free bun was a nice surprise, but they didn't offer gluten free pasta. Nice to have a good burger in town, but a little expensive to put it on our list of frequently visited places.
Hi Susan, thanks for your feedback! Please know we just switched to Pepsi soon we will also carry Dr. Pepper, Mt. Dew & Sierra Mist. A variety of GF dishes are important to us (not many options in the area). Many of our entrees are GF or can be altered. When on the menu, we can make GF fried fish & chicken. Also, our hand cut fries are ALWAYS GF! Pasta is coming soon-we use fresh pasta & are looking for a suitable GF option. Check our FB for updates! Kindly, RL@SH
Great stop between distilleries, for great food and drinks! Wonderful atmosphere!
Wonderful to hear - great having you all in for brunch! You all were a fun group!! :D Glad you made us a stop on your tour )
It is wonderful to see this restaurant operating in Shelbyville. My husband and I decided to go out on the spur of the moment. If Red Lion wasn't on Open Table, we would not have known to try it.
What a nice experience - and multiple options: outdoors, a casual bar area, and formal dining room.
ONLY suggestion - that atrium would make a great bar. Thanks and see you soon!
The service and ambiance was perfect for a summer evening dining experience.
The food was very good, though I was expecting a 'wow' factor. The portions were appropriate from a nutrition standpoint. The portion sizes would be considered small compared to most other restaurants of the same caliber.
Absolutely loved the entire experience & can’t wait to go again! Everything was fresh, fragrant & delicious. You owe it to yourself to visit.
Third time visit! Never disappointed! Friendly staff, Great food, Great drinks.
We moved to the area about a year ago and discovered the Red Lion. We loved it. When we had friends come from out of town we would take them to the Red Lion. We have been impressed with the quality of the food, the friendliness of the staff and the overall dining experience. Last night was a disaster! We sent two entrees back because they were cold. One came back fine the other was so overcooked it was inedible but was still charged for it. Service was marginal at best. Overall it wasn’t a positive experience. I’m hoping the is an exception rather than a new normal. We will return, however if the dining experience is the same, it will probably be our last.
A fantastic experience!!! Really loved this restaurant! The food, drinks, and the service was absolutely stellar! It was a wonderful ending to our day along the bourbon trail. Highly recommend!
This place was a random find for us for our anniversary. We loved the ambience and the history behind the buildings. It almost felt like we were eating at a speak easy with kind of secret signage. The service, food, and cocktails were all fantastic and we will definitely be recommending this hidden gem to others (already have actually) and we will definitely be back!

My Mom and I came for Saturday brunch. I didn’t realize that The Red Lion was now in the former Science Hill Inn dining room and we were confused when no one was in the back room but someone directed us to the correct area. My mom got Shrimp and Grits and I got the Eggs Benedict Risotto. We both enjoyed our food very much. I do wish bread had been offered. When you’re in a dining room that used to serve delicious biscuits and cornbread, bread would be a good idea. My loaded Bloody Mary was tasty but a bit pricey with just the addition of some pork belly. Next time I’ll try a mimosa or something else. I’m so glad you’re open for Saturday brunch- it’s nice to have that option!
We actually ate a snack as we had 8:30 dinner reservations at another restaurant. the waitress made some good suggestions about some lighter fare and everything was so good. What a hidden gem of a restaurant. A must-try!
