The Red House Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Recently reconfigured space - now much smaller than before renovations, so reservations definitely recommended. Great selection of small plates as well as excellent seafood main courses. All food delicious and presentation creative. Service attentive and friendly. Simple, adequate wine list. The room with bar has a welcoming open wood fire. The only hot beverage available is warmed cider - no coffee or tea.
Met a friend for lunch. The food was ok; the texture of the black bean burger was a bit grainy, and the flavor was nothing special - it needed some zip. We had a new server who didn't have all the answers but was efficient in finding out the details. He was confused about a drink order, and he needed us to point out items on the menu and repeat our orders. He was trying his best and was pleasant, however. Drinks were good, but a bit expensive. Seating was awkward and tight.
This was a sad experience. Part might be due to the fact that the restaurant had only reopened two days before, but it made us wonder why it had reopened at all. Very few tables in a cramped, low-ceiling place, no tea, coffee, iced tea, lemonade available, one choice, albeit a good one, on the dessert menu, and truly tiny portions for the main starters. Alas, we will not back.
We had reserved a table about a month before arriving to Boston for Saturday night. As we called to adjust our reservation for 2 more people, we could not reach anyone via phone or app. Further on-line research indicated they were closed for renovations.
It would have been Really good to be notified of that before being left without reservations on a prime time Saturday night.
I made a reservation for 6 and asked for a quiet location. The restaurant gave us a dining room that was empty most of the 2 hours we were there. It was perfect, and we really appreciated their effort to accommodate my request! We had a wonderful dinner there. I started with the sriracha charred cauliflower with pistachio & black sesame seed vinaigrette, topped with peppadew peppers. It had the right amount of zing and was an intriguing blend of flavors. I had a taste of the sautéed mushrooms baked in golden phyllo, served with warm scallion-vermouth cream which were rich and flavorful.
I ordered the lobster fra diavolo, with fresh Maine lobster sautéed with spicy stewed tomatoes & garlic, served over linguini. It was a large portion with a good kick to it. The lobster meat was sweet and tender. I tried the drunken crab rigatoni with fresh crabmeat, spicy tomatoes, smoked bacon, vodka, cream & gluten-free rigatoni which was delicious. No one who ordered it needed gluten-free, and there was a little trepidation as gluten-free pasta can have a mealy texture, but this was quite good. We liked the smaller portion option, which was plenty. I gave the food 4 stars because it didn't reach the level of most amazing, but we all enjoyed our meals and would return happily.
We came at The Red House upon friends recommendations. We loved the food : sea food plates, smoked Salmon sandwich and watermelon salad. Very good and fresh. Our server has been very nice to move us once a larger table table had been available (we wanted to eat outdoor as the terrasse is great but first got a small table for 2 whereas we were 4).
Very pleasant place!
Having worked near Harvard Square for 10+ years it was nice to try some place new to us. We had siracha grilled cauliflower, lobster roll & lobster risotto. ALL delicious! Outdoor seating was divine for people watching & next time I hope to take advantage of the atrium dining room. We'll definitely return!
We were able to get the Music Room for our dinner with our nieces and nephews. One niece must eat gluten-free and there were choices for her. Our server timed her appearances perfectly. We were able to hear the conversation which was a huge plus for the uncle. The food was delicious!
We had a pleasant outdoor table that did not wobble. The hurricane drink was very good and worth getting another, but we didn't care for the grapefruit shandy. The heirloom tomatoes in the caprese salad were great, and I liked the scallop appetizer with pea tendrils.
This is a really cute, cape-style, restaurant in the middle of Harvard Square. It was not very crowded on a Sunday afternoon. They have great seafood. My group ordered two-dozen oysters for 50 cents each, the shrimp cocktail, and I ordered tuna fish tacos. Everything was delicious! We sat indoors but they have some nice outdoor seating on the patio.
This is a mixed review. First: service was great. Attentive bartender and server. Food: mixed. Lobster fra diavolo was fantastic, the carbonara was a huge miss (scrambled eggs in the sauce means either terrible or lazy line staff), special kale pesto pasta with chicken was good but didn't match the price standard. Cauliflower with sriracha appetizer was a bit different from expectations but a nice appetizer/salad.
Great outdoor seating.
Overall I'd visit again but you have to be choosey about the dishes
Excellent food, cosy and laid-back but elegant and classy interior, friendly staff, quick service, nice environment . A great place for casual lunch and for special occasion in the heart of Cambridge. I highly recommend it to everyone who loves warmth and elegance of the old world!
I have been to the Red House three times in the last couple of months as it's a quick walk from my office. I have had the 2-for-1 oysters at lunch a couple of times and they were great.
Recently, a friend and I both had the summer watermelon salad with grilled shrimp for lunch and it was delicious! It was supposed to have feta in it (which would have been even more delicious) but the restaurant had not received their feta delivery at that point so our waitress was kind enough to give us each a $2 discount off of the salad. She gave us excellent service overall. I would highly recommend The Red House.
The patio dining option was great, intimate but not crowded and with plenty of cover from the sun and the elements. There was a nice variety of vegetarian appetizers and many of the entrees were available as half-portions which made it easy to try a number of different dishes. The cocktails were interesting and well-mixed and quite enjoyable. And the 2-for-1 oysters are a nice treat. The highlight was the amazing "mussels from brussels"; we asked for extra bread to mop up the delicious broth. I will come back for those mussels! And I always enjoy seeing rehabbed and re-purposed buildings, so it was wonderful experiencing a corner of early 1800s Cambridge.
We to the T to the Red House before a matinee performance at The American Repertory Theater at Harvard. We were seated around 12:30 (with reservations) and finished lunch at 1:15 PM, perfect timing to walk to the theater. Service was impeccable, food was delicious. Lunch portions were small, but adequate. The lobster carbonara was outstanding! I could have eaten a dinner portion, but would have fallen asleep during the ART performance!
I arranged a 20-person reunion at the Red House once before, and while it turned out to be a great evening I promised myself I would return when I didn't have that many other people to please! This last trip was a quiet dinner with a friend I hadn't seen in too, too long. Perfect. Great food, good service, wonderful ambience.
Had a fun and really good dinner here, our first time but our friends go there occasionally. My husband ordered oysters and loved them and the boiled lobster was outstanding. They also had fiddleheads which is fun since they are so seasonal. My gluten free pasta dish was very good. All in all we will go again, seems reliable and comfortable.
Good food. Wonderfully casual atmosphere and great service. I had a reservation for 8, and of course we all don't show up at the same time, but, wow, they let us early arrivers go ahead and be seated at the table. Unusual in this day and age. Nice quiet atmosphere, great for talking and eating with friends.
