The Red Door
Luciano, the chef/owner is not only a wonderful chef, he's a great host. Kelsey our server was also excellent. We've been several times recently and loved it. This time we took friends who has not been and they it too. Luciano told them he would not disappoint and he didn't!. Highly recommended. But make a reservations if its the weekend.
A perfect place for a special occasion. Made a reservation for a birthday celebration and was very pleased. The food and service were excellent. It's not a large space so expect to hear some noise and be fairly close to adjoining tables. The staff (including the chef who checks to see that you're pleased with your meal) is committed to seeing to it that your evening is enjoyable. It may be on the expensive side but it's one of those places that you come away feeling as though the experience was worth every cent. I'm looking forward to another visit to try some other dishes.
We felt that the food was highly mediocre especially considering the price. We did enjoy the salad but main dishes ( scallop risotto and gluten free pasta) were tasteless. Our bill was over $100, and we will not be going back.
Excellent meal, as always. Love speaking with the chef/owner.
The food and service was wonderful. We were greeted promptly and seated.
One of the best restaurants in the city! Chef Luciano has got it going on!
Wonderful service, even the chef/owner stopped by our table. Food was delicious, it was hard to choose what to order! Definitely would come back!
I will return until I’ve eaten my way through the menu, the. Return for repeats. Like visiting a friend’s home.
The Red Door is one of our favorite go-to restaurants. The food is always top notch and the pricing is reasonable. The Beef Wellington is absolutely amazing! Service is always friendly and attentive and the owner/Chef always stops by to say hello.
Very good Italian for a reasonable price. Good service and relatively quiet at lunchtime. Excellent bread, would have liked olive oil to dip rather than just butter. Will come again.
The Red Door was Outstanding. The food was absolutely delicious and beyond expectations. Loved the intimate feel of a smaller restaurant. I live 3.5 hrs away and planned a dinner here during a wknd bday and was not disappointed. Top 5 restaurants I’ve been to. Luciano the chef/owner came out and introduced himself, was very passionate and informative about his creations and the food definitely validated. We felt welcomed like family that had come to visit. I will drive all the way to La Jolla again just to eat there. Fantastic. Fresh. Authentic. Delicious. Excellent.
Beautiful little spot in Mission Hills. Food was excellent: taste and portion size.
Venue extremely noisy - could use some acoustical elements to cut down on noise level. My entree of rare ahi tuna was extremely salty. Other in my party enjoyed their meal. Lighting was really low with no candles or other ambiance to combat the dark seating in the corner.
The Red Door has changed owners in the last year and now has a bit more of an Italian feel than it did before. That having been said, they have managed to retain an appreciation and practice of highlighting locally sourced, seasonal food. This translates into a more knowledgeable experience with the wait staff (who are also able to make perfect wine pairing suggestions), better food, and an overall wonderful meal. The chef made his rounds through the main dining room while we were there to talk about everyone's meals as well, which made this place feel a perfect balance between a comfy home meal made with love and attention and a fine dining experience out on the town. Well done.
The Red Door is me and my wife’s favorite spot in SD for a nice dinner for two in a comfortable atmosphere. The food is always perfectly prepared, staff is friendly and the owner Luciano always greets us with a smile and checks on us during our meal. Definitely a place for couples that want to have a great dinner in a quiet neighborhood without having to deal with the frustration of going downtown.
Incredible food, amazing service, fabulous staff!
Amazing food and service , John was the best waiter, and the owner / chef is extremely welcoming he makes sure everyone is taken care of!! I highly recommend this restaurant!!!
It was my first time here and I will definitely be going back! From the moment my bf and I walked in we felt special, taken care of, and like the staff truly cared to make an amazing impression and give us a memorable dining experience. We ordered 3 things and each were as delightful as the next. We got one of the appetizer specials, fish carpaccio which was as beautiful on the pallet as it was to look at! And then for the entrees we got the seafood linguini and the branzino style sea bass, bone in which the chef removed before us at the table with ease. We didn’t save room for dessert but we definitely will next time. Service was amazing, very involved and attentive. Can’t wait to go back and would recommend to anyone! :)
Fantastic food and service at this cozy restaurant.
The head waiter recommended a delicious cocktail to start. Bottles of wine were half price. The mushroom risotto was delicious. Chef even came out to greet us. A lovely time.
The chef came out to meet us and told us about what we were ordering. Very authentic Italian food and they even accommodated my gluten sensitivity with a delicious gluten free pasta. The service was great overall. We will definitely be visiting this restaurant again.
We just love to eat at The Red Door. It is definitely our favorite restaurant in San Diego, and we have recommended it to several friends of ours. We love the food, the service and Luciano, the owner/chef if always welcoming and kind.
Oh my goodness! What a wonderful experience!! The food was on point with delicious flavours, sauces, umami. Chef came into the dining room, greeted each of the guests, and made each person feel welcome and appreciated. Every person on staff was attentive and efficient. The dining space was well spaced and although nearly all of the tables were occupied, the room did not feel crowded or overly loud.
You will not want to miss this gem. Go early and often!
Thank you to the wait staff and the wonderfully talented chef who created a superb experience that really made my Birthday memorable.. The service was exceptional and we had a beautiful time .. looking forward to coming to your restaurant again soon ..
Excellent menu, with beautifully prepared fresh food. Visiting from out of town, so we dined at TRD two nights in a row. Marvelous!
Excellent food, wonderful evening. All staff SUPER!
Luciano made us his specialty chicken parmigiana and it was the best I have ever had.
Enjoyed brunch with bottomless mimosas. Everyone's dish was tasty. We'll definitely be back.
Wonderful experience tonight. Very personable and educated staff- chef/owner friendly and informative Food was delicious - too many wonderful options - can’t wait to go back!
Excellent dining experience. Great food, great service!
Waiter was little pushy on trying dish. Which wasn’t the best. He was friendly though and attentive.
Superb staff who all help one another. Excellent menu choices especially the eggplant parmagiano. Owner is very hospitable and visits each table. Will recommend the restaurant to everyone.
Staff was friendly and attentive. Best staff service in over 1 year at any resturant. Chef came out and introduced himself, nice touch of a personal nature. Food was excellent.
We had a wonderful meal. Visiting the area and found it on Open Table. The only problem was one very loud table of 4 dominated our server. She needs to get better at learning to extricate herself from those situations. Other than that the food and atmosphere was excellent!
Wonderful food and service. We had a beautiful western view of the sunset.
Excellent food, great service
The food is very good with a super friendly and accommodating staff. The atmosphere is casual if a little too energetic, noisy.
We had a big group of 9 for dinner. Service was maybe a little slow, but we cut them some slack since we had a big group. The apps were delicious, the entrees awesome and so gourmet. The house bread is like the best made from scratch every day. Wild Alaskan King Salmon was awesome! Eggplant Parmesan was awesome! Everyone enjoyed it. We will return.
What a great evening! Chef and owner Luciano greeted us shortly after we were seated. We were a party of 4 and all of us loved our meals. Service was excellent; the staff is friendly and helpful. We will be back very soon!
Dinner was wonderful, as always, and it’s nice that Luciano spends time visiting with Customers to make sure that everything is going well & he’s always ready to make suggestions.
