The Red Door
The Red Door is a great dining experience. All three of us really enjoyed our meals. Everything was very fresh and made from scratch. The owner/chef, Luciano, made the rounds to every table telling us about how and where he sources his ingredients every day. One note, the portions are quite large, so keep that in mind so that you have room for one of their fabulous desserts.
We went for a belated Valentine's Day dinner and were not disappointed. The food is outstanding. Every part of our meal - from the starter to dessert - was so delicious. We will be back again!
As usual, a special occasion dinner at the Red Door did not disappoint...we brought friends from out of town who were blown away by the culinary scope of the meal. Excellence in every way is what we experienced. Luciano’s pride in his craft is a pleasure to see. His hands on concern for the success of each dinner makes dining here a real treat. Mission Hills finally got the amazing restaurant the neighborhood deserves. We have eaten here many times and will be back again and again....
Our server was amazing and her recommendations were spot on. The food was wonderful and the chef even came out to chat with us. We will definitely return.
Great experience, great food and nice atmosphere. Our server Philip was great. Luciano the owner takes the time to greet his guests table side. Looking forward to the next time.
This restaurant is under new management and it is absolutely fantastic. We had the roasted beet salad and eggplant parmesan. Really this was one of the best meals we have had in ages. The new chef/owner Luciano came around and introduced himself to everyone. This is an unbelievable neighborhood gem and we plan to be frequent visitors.
Chef Luciano always comes out and greets the dining room and takes the time to chat with everyone . The food is always flavorful and fresh . The portions are generous and the bar is well stocked . I can’t recommend this little gem enough ! It is our favorite place to go and always a wonderful experience.
Great dining experience with a cozy atmosphere where it feels like ta
One the best dining experiences our family has had in San Diego in over 20 years. Chef Cibelli personally came out to meet us and explain the dishes. We noticed him come out 3-4 more times to speak to other customers. The food was incredibly fresh, flavorful and not over the top in any way. I had the Wellington for the first time in my life and it was heavenly. The rest of the family all had different pasta dishes and could not believe how great fresh pasta tasted. My wife also had the meatballs on the side and said they and the marinara they came with were so flavorful. We will be back many times as well as refer friends and family. Thx Red Door!
Food consistently excellent served well. Slightly pricy but still enjoy and keep going back. In California tough to make a living in restaurant business.
No music playing. Was creepy quiet.
Food was delicious
It was a lovely experience. The chef even came out to greet us!
Was an awesome place to eat. We ordered 4 different items and were very impressed with them all. The owner came by and encouraged us to try the deserts. Wow the cheesecake and the toffee cake with ice cream was incredible. A must go to place. We will definitely go again
One of our favorite meals ever. Each dish was beautifully prepared, seasonal, fresh, perfectly balanced. Loved the Mission Hills neighborhood and the vibe was cozy and charming, like having dinner at a good friend’s house. Service by Kelsey was stellar and Luciano the owner/chef came to our table to say hello and talk about his specials. Highly recommend and we will definitely be back.
The restaurant is lovely and we were warmly greeted and allowed to linger over drinks, dinner and dessert. The food was amazing and innovative. The chef even came out to talk about what we were ordering. He obviously takes a lot of pride in his menu and changes it often with daily specials. I can't wait to back and introduce other friends to this wonderful experience.
This place is a gem with a great brunch menu.
Well as locals in Mission Hills we really wanted to like this place. We had gotten take out before and it was good , but wanted to try it there.
It wasnt very busy and were seated right away, yet we didn’t receive water until another party arrived 15 min after us and got theirs immediately. The drinks menu was separated which didn’t make sense, either and when my bf mentioned to the server she was okay if not sympathetic.
. Took another 10 min for the drink ( which came as a very short pour) for $14 and coffee, which was tepid at best.
The fish tacos my bf ordered were made with salmon. And while that would have been okay for me he was aghast and did mention that fact that 99% of fish tacos are made with a whitefish . Our server, again , was unimpressed. He also ordered a Bloody Mary, took 10 min and was basically a teeny bit of vodka and tomato juice with a celery stalk plopped into it. For $14.
My Aztec Eggs were very cold, and at this point I was tired of it all and got the check and split.
The staff was so nice and helpful and the food was amazing! Ordered the biscuits and jammies and lox for staters and egg Benedict and omelette of the day for brunch.
Fabulous food. Energetic And Attentive Chef. Highly recommend the specials but everything is top notch. Wine list is reasonably priced and Chef Luciano personally picks the wines. Go.
Little slow, not bad.
We’re seated right away but server was a bit slow. Very good food. Cocktails also very good. Noise level in the restaurant is a bit over the top making conversation a challenge. Chef/Owner personally makes the rounds to the tables- nice touch. The bri was amazing. Their old fashion cocktail “the Wellington” is very good. Lobster ravioli and lasagna were delicious. Will return.
Great Friday evening dinner at the Red Door, on our way home from the airport. Food was excellent, menu has enough choices but not overwhelming. Service was spot on - friendly, lots of suggestions, our table twice visited by the owner/chef.
The food was very good. The farm to table vegetables were perfect and the sea bass special that night was very good.
We always enjoy our meals here. Luciano works very hard to present a great menu.
Food is fresh, delicious and Italian. What could be better! Excellent service! The only negative I have is that it’s quite noisy. But looking forward to returning.
What a find, charismatic charming chef, who visits tables and explains his nightly creative menu...
We experienced both lunch ( quiet lunchtime group) and dinner (buzzing energetic friendly)...
Highly recommend you try The Red Door, like us you will return......
We both thought the fish special entree was possibly the best fish we have ever had. Ever. That’s nuts. We’ve been dining for 40 + years.
We we amazed
A friend and I just wanted to try something new before heading to the theater. Everything was wonderful.
Delicious beef Wellington, friendly staff, the chef came out to introduce himself to the restaurant! Will be going back
Wonderful!! The food was delicious, the service outstanding and the atmosphere everything we could hope for.
What an amazing experience! We were greeted by the owner at the door, he checked on us several times. Staff was appropriately attentive, food was outstanding. We’ll definitely come again!
The food was amazing! The building was very comfy and had a home like feel. The chef, who came out to talk with his guests, was friendly and nice. I will be coming here again throughout my stay in San Diego!
Great food, great chef, great atmosphere and fair pricing
Always delicious and nightly specials keep the experience fresh with great seasonal and unique dishes. Chef Luciano is always gracious, warm, and welcoming. The pride and passion he has for his menu is reflected by your tastebuds. A wonderful atmodphere with very personalized service.
Took my family out to celebrate a special occasion. The service was incredible and our hostess was extremely kind and very attentive. Food was excellent and the entire atmosphere of the restaurant was comforting and intimate. We loved having Chef Luciano converse with us, as it made the meal very personable. We look forward to our next experience here.
Went to celebrate a birthday. Had a wonderful time. Food was delicious from start to finish. Service was great. Chef came out and talked to us. Very enjoyable.
Love this place, service is outstanding and the Chef always comes around to make sure everything was done right. Ask him for a wine recommendation? You’ll have a glass in front of you in 30s. Delicious!
The shaved brussel sprout salad and orchiette pasta were fantastic! We came from LA and will come back for sure.
Authentic Italian food with delicious and creative dishes, great wines, attentively and very friendly waiters and a charming Italian chef Luciano - that’s the Red Door. We always enjoy the nice and cozy atmosphere and are so happy that this fabulous restaurant is in our neighborhood. And for those who love good live music and just a small dinner or an appetizer- there is a bar right next to the Red Door!
