Food was amazing. Tried bone marrow for the first time and wow I didn't know what I was missing. Had the Beef Wellington and Lamb Shank entrees both to die for. Very nice small spot with unbelievable food.

The Red Door has become our favorite restaurant in San Diego. As, their friendly service and excellent menu items with various Specials created by Chef Luciano have always been perfect. And, this past Saturday night, we were called by our friends from La Jolla and invited to join them for dinner at the Red Door. We did not hesitate to accept and it was a wonderful meal and experience.

Great food with great people! Our server, Nicholas, was fun and attentive. Luciano, the owner, treats everyone as if they’re his special guest.

Amazing birthday dinner. The chef/owner came out and greeted us. I also got birthday truffles. The vegan quinoa was beyond this world. My fiancé loved his chicken. Will visit again next time we’re in San Diego! Thanks for a wonderful birthday dinner!!

Went with a group of 8 for brunch. None of us had ever been, but we all agree we'd go back. Very flavorful food. Service is a little slow but worth the wait. It also allowed us to have more time to visit and chat! Great place!

Jonathan was great. Gave recommendations for first timers (Sunday Brunch) . Our food was tasty. Cinnabons were not too sweet. Short ribs were tender. Definitely recommended and will go back .

A very enjoyable evening with friends. Wait staff was attentive but a bit over zealous. When a table says they are enjoying appetizers now and will order later, should waitstaff keep coming back for orders every 3 minutes?
Food was delicious and well prepared but a bit too salty for my palate

We were looking for a place to eat in the area. Today, there are so many options. Having driven past the Red Door numerous times, I thought, "Why not tonight?" The service, I thought, was excellent. The owner/chef, who came by our table, could not have been more sincere. We ordered the lobster ravioli as an appetizer. My wife thought it was a little too salty and that the sauce, although excellent, overwhelmed the lobster. She had a point; it would have been great with meat. I ordered the lamb, which was very good. She ordered the squid risotto, which was worthy. The portions are generous. The prices are reasonable. In short, the value is there. I think what we may have appreciated most was that we could sit and enjoy a quiet meal together.

Excellent! Luciano and his staff do a tremendous job. Have a cocktail at the bar next door if you have time. The papperdelle with the meat ragu and the short ribs were terrific! The beets with buratta and the brussel sprouts also excellent!

I saw the other reviews and had my doubts. Could a place really be that good and affordable? Well I’m here to say yes. The food is incredible, the service is great, and the chef was very nice and personable.

The experience was great and the next time I’m in San Diego I plan to return.

Btw, we had short ribs, lobster stuffed ravioli, and the seafood linguini. All were phenomenal. The cheesecake, and banana cream pie were incredible also.

We had a great time at The Red Door! I hadn't been since the new chef and owner took over and I was very impressed. As always, it's nice and quiet for when you need to be able to hold a conversation. The service, including food and wine recommendations, was spot on an the food was improved over last time I was there. The new chef has some creative seasonal dishes that are very flavorful and good portion sizes. He came around and introduced himself to everybody, which was nice, too. I had the butternut brie appetizer (to die for!), risotto (big portion and very delicious) and banana cream pie. I will definitely be going back!

We were seated quickly with our 5:30 reservation on a Saturday evening. Our server (don’t recall her name) came quickly to go over the menu and take care of the drink orders. Chef Luciano greeted as well after we had a chance to look over the menu, but before we ordered. He told us about some of the specials that he recommended. Our mouths were watering after he left and some of had to change what we were originally going to order to the Chef’s recommendations.

We ordered a couple of apps, roasted beets and burrata cheese and Brussels sprouts with bacon, yum.

For the entrees, wild caught ahi tuna which was a special and prepped like no other I’ve ever had. So amazing! Pork Schnitzel also amazing, Salmon belly with a bed of pasta delish, and the classic eggplant Parmesan is always a good choice.

Overall the meal was fantastic! We will return. Thank you Chef Luciano.

The food was exceptional. I had the bucatini and my date had the pork schnitzel special. Staff is professional and efficient. And the chef came by and introduced himself (Luciano) and came by later to see how we enjoyed our meals and make recommendations for dessert. I had the ricotta cheesecake- delicious!

We will be back. Highest recommendation for this neighborhood gem!

The atmosphere is very pleasant and the server was very attentive, however, the food was very slow coming to our table. There was only one other party in the restaurant so I'm not sure why it took so long for us to be served. The salad was overdressed but the dressing was good.

My husband and I had a wonderful dinner at The Red Door 2 nights ago. The ambience was cozy, charming, and romantic. The food was divine! We ordered the lobster ravioli and sea bass entrees and finished with ricotta cheesecake for dessert. Everything was absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. Chef Luciano took the time to come greet us at our table and check on our dining experience. We are looking forward to returning in a few months to dine here again! Grazie Chef!

Had a great experience at The Red Door. I have to say our server, Jonathan, made the experience memorable. He greeted each of us as we came in and was always prompt in seeing if we needed anything and refilling our mimosas! The food was excellent, a little pricey, but I’d definitely recommend it to friend and family.

The food was outstanding as was the service. I definitely will be back. I had the white seabass which was absolutely delicious. Our friends had the Carlsbad mussels as an appetizer, and I will surely get them next time! The portion was huge and the taste was great! Don't skip the desserts, especially the Banana Cream Pie!!!

We made reservations at the restaurant and decided to show up early and sit in the bar. It turned out to be a great evening! We were able to catch the tail end of happy hour, met the chef and heard a fantastic guitarist! The food was over the top amazing! This was our second visit and we will be back again the next time we are in town. The Red Door is on our “must visit” list!

On our last night in San Deigo, we looked for a quality Italian restaurant with last-minute reservation availability. The Red door popped up and we were not disappointed. The wait staff was knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. The food was prepared well and served beautifully. We were impressed that Luciano the Chef/Owner circled the dining area several times to check on his guests and made us feel welcome and genuinely appreciated. I would definitely recommend the Red Door and will return on our next trip to San Deigo.

I had heard good things about this little restaurant where they make their own pasta and the charming owner/chef goes to each table to describe the specialties, etc. It sounded wonderful but in reality is was SOOO much better!! I wish I lived in the neighborhood so I could go there every week! Fish was cooked perfect, we were served some of the best pasta in San Diego, and the deal on the 40+ day aged steak was amazing. Our party of four was blown away .

A perfect place for a special occasion. Made a reservation for a birthday celebration and was very pleased. The food and service were excellent. It's not a large space so expect to hear some noise and be fairly close to adjoining tables. The staff (including the chef who checks to see that you're pleased with your meal) is committed to seeing to it that your evening is enjoyable. It may be on the expensive side but it's one of those places that you come away feeling as though the experience was worth every cent. I'm looking forward to another visit to try some other dishes.

This time we took friends who has not been and they it too. Luciano told them he would not disappoint and he didn't!. Highly recommended. But make a reservations if its the weekend.

We felt that the food was highly mediocre especially considering the price. We did enjoy the salad but main dishes ( scallop risotto and gluten free pasta) were tasteless. Our bill was over $100, and we will not be going back.

Very good Italian for a reasonable price. Good service and relatively quiet at lunchtime. Excellent bread, would have liked olive oil to dip rather than just butter. Will come again.

The Red Door was Outstanding. The food was absolutely delicious and beyond expectations. Loved the intimate feel of a smaller restaurant. I live 3.5 hrs away and planned a dinner here during a wknd bday and was not disappointed. Top 5 restaurants I’ve been to. Luciano the chef/owner came out and introduced himself, was very passionate and informative about his creations and the food definitely validated. We felt welcomed like family that had come to visit. I will drive all the way to La Jolla again just to eat there. Fantastic. Fresh. Authentic. Delicious. Excellent.

Venue extremely noisy - could use some acoustical elements to cut down on noise level. My entree of rare ahi tuna was extremely salty. Other in my party enjoyed their meal. Lighting was really low with no candles or other ambiance to combat the dark seating in the corner.

The Red Door has changed owners in the last year and now has a bit more of an Italian feel than it did before. That having been said, they have managed to retain an appreciation and practice of highlighting locally sourced, seasonal food. This translates into a more knowledgeable experience with the wait staff (who are also able to make perfect wine pairing suggestions), better food, and an overall wonderful meal. The chef made his rounds through the main dining room while we were there to talk about everyone's meals as well, which made this place feel a perfect balance between a comfy home meal made with love and attention and a fine dining experience out on the town. Well done.

The Red Door is me and my wife’s favorite spot in SD for a nice dinner for two in a comfortable atmosphere. The food is always perfectly prepared, staff is friendly and the owner Luciano always greets us with a smile and checks on us during our meal. Definitely a place for couples that want to have a great dinner in a quiet neighborhood without having to deal with the frustration of going downtown.
