The Recreation serves Bistro food that draws inspiration from Mediterranean Europe, with a cooking style and warm hospitality reminiscent of the greatest Australian barbecue imaginable. Dishes such as Scallops cooked in Recreation butter and Chargrilled Hopkins River Angus Scotch fillet certainly add to this reverie.
The Recreation is situated at the top of Smith Street just a few short paces from the beautiful Edinburgh Gardens. The building dates back to the 1870s, within are comfortable surroundings with dark wood tables and a bustling open kitchen revolving around our custom-built charcoal grill. The grill not only enhances our well sourced steak but also forms part of our wide seafood and vegetarian options. Uniquely The Recreation provides guests the opportunity to BYO special bottles of wine and has a bottle shop if you wish to buy wine to take away whilst dining with us.

Saw the Recreation featured on Postcards episode and earmarked as a must visit. I wasn’t disappointed ! Occasion was a business lunch for 4. Staff friendly and helpful; an eclectic menu offering delicious choices to suit everyone’s taste; broad wine list and I thought well priced depending on your budget; nice selection of beers. Atmosphere comfortable and inviting, service excellent. Will book again soon to share this time with friends. Top pick for me, Jenny Shalders

Great venue, love the option to bring your own wine, consistently good food, have been a umber of times now. Seasonal produce, friendly staff. Cost atmosphere without being seates too close for comfort. Looking forward to heading back soon.

A fantastic combination of food, wine and service run by experienced hospitality professionals who know how to satisfy customers and to keep them returning time after time. Produces consistently great food and has a lovely local neighbourhood feel.

The team at The Rec just know what they are doing. The food is great, the room is relaxed, the wines expertly chosen and not expensive and the service is spot on. There's a reason why we go there regularly.

Excellent attentive service. Well spaced tables. Oysters with rhubarb sauce great and other Interesting entrees Wagyu beef recommended Great cheese selection and interesting deserts BYO available and much appreciated although they have an excellent wine list to choose from. We are frequent visitors and always find new items on the menu to entice us!

Our second visit to this fine restaurant and we decided it was even better this time round - and we loved it the first time! Food is delicious and inventive and backed by a great wine list, it's always going to be a good night out! Service was spot on - Shelly (I think?), was on the ball with recommendations and timing (as we had a movie to get to), and it was a pleasure to have what I like to call "intelligent grown up service" in an establishment these days! Thanks all for a lovely dinner!

Welcoming, accommodating, and very well prepared good food. I liked the option of smaller meals, and being able to share all the meals, that way it becomes more affordable to go out for dinner, and eat someth8ng special.
