About this restaurant

  • Good for groups
  • Lively
  • Innovative
The Rathskeller is the German term for ‘council’s cellar,’ a room in the basement of a civil building. Formerly the mansion's basement housed the jail cell for Morristown. Now, the Rathskeller serves the Oyster Bar Menu with a few German Specials. The Rathskeller is the perfect space for larger groups looking to dine at Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen. We offer a family style menu for groups of 9-14 for $78 which includes highlights from The Oyster Bar Menu.

Every Friday night, the Rathskeller features a different, local band starting at 9pm.

We went to the Rathskeller area to see a band and grab a bite to eat. The jazz band that was playing were very good. The service was ok no real issues there. My husband had oysters which he loved. I had shrimp cocktail which were overcooked and very average. My husband had the burger which was no better than from a diner. Nothing special at all. At $19 you would expect something more. The vinegar fries that accompanied the burger tasted good, though were room temperature and limp. I had the Barnegat scallop dinner. The flavor and freshness of the scallops was very good. The short rib agnolotti were small, very doughy and lacked flavor. I think there were 3 maybe 4 scallops for $34. We don't mind spending money on dinner. However, when it is so average that one can get much better elsewhere, it made us feel ripped off.

Price fixed dinner for Valentine’s Day. Food was fair and portion size was tiny. We understand how fine dining may have small portions. But this was embarrassing for the restaurant. My entre was cold and needed to be returned. We won’t be back got a while.

The food was not good. The burger was not cooked to temperature and the cacio pepe was closer to buttered noodles you would order for a toddler.

Band was very good but a bit loud. Menu choices were solid. A bit expensive overall.

We enjoyed this less-crowded and somewhat quieter downstairs setting. The menu is the same as the main bar/restaurant upstairs and theres an additional menu as well. We always get a dozen oysters and they never disappoint. The charcuterie plate is a crowd pleaser, but should come with more bread or crackers. They do not offer or serve a bread basket although they really should. The main entrees were good.

There to watch Midnight Sun perform, so it was loud due to the live music. Otherwise cool, relaxed atmosphere to hang out. Had the burger it was very good.

I have been to the different dining areas at this restaurant since their opening. Dining in the Rathskellar was not a pleasant experience. Unfortunately nothing has improved with the servers and hosts. They are so understaffed that it is so unfair to the servers working and it makes for a miserable dining experience where the average meal with drinks averages $80-$100 per person. There were 5 of us. Our $17.00 manhattans were not filled to the rim in the tiny glasses. They should have the normal martini 🍸 glasses. Manager sent us 2 manhattans on the house. The server had to be instructed on everything. When our meals came they were ALL LUKEWARM. Three of us who had meat entrees did not send them back fearing the meat would be ruined. Two other dishes were returned to be heated. The unfortunate thing was that the food was really good but who can enjoy room temperature food? Again the manager apologized. The appetizers were also good, BUT with the prices they charge why is their mediocre peasant bread basket an extra charge? $7 for small basket and $10 for large basket. BREAD SHOULD BE COMPLIMENTARY. This restaurants environment is very inviting, the food could be good if it was hot, and the servers need training in how to serve in a restaurant with these prices. The owner had fine dining restaurants in NYC. He needs to truly refine this restaurant in almost every aspect.

Way too loud. Food wasn’t very good and menu options were slim. Waitstaff were ok but not great service.
