The Rag Trader harkens back to the nostalgia of a forgotten time - when things were created by hand and craftsmanship mattered. A time when neighbors gathered to share their stories over good food.
The Rag Trader evokes the old garment factory that once was, complemented with quirky details that unfold on each level. Executive Chef Justin Ottervanger has created rustic and elegant dishes that showcase the restaurant's relationship with local farms and purveyors. Speaking to time-honored techniques with a focus on offerings best shared amongst friends.
A peek downstairs will reveal Bo Peep Cocktail & Highball Store, a cocktail and piano bar that will make your heart smile.

I cannot say enough great things about this hidden gem. Our experience this morning left us feeling happy, satisfied and looking forward to our next visit! The food is excellent, the service even better and you can’t beat their bottomless Punchbowl! Thank You!
Loved the ambiance and the staff was so accommodating and nice.
This place is always a reliable choice for a great time with friends or family.
We were a group of nine this time.
The service was excellent, and the food was as good as usual.
I usually have the crispy skin salmon with black rice in green coconut curry, which is always a good choice, but this last visit, I got the hanger steak, which was cooked perfectly medium-rare, as requested, and very flavorful, served with excellent French fries.
The Caesar salad was great, and large enough for two to share as a starter, and the crispy Brussels sprouts in sweet chili sauce were delicious.
We shared a bunch of desserts, and they were all good.
The drunken doughnuts were great, as was the sticky toffee pudding, but my favorite was the dark chocolate ganache tart.
And the bartender really knows how to mix a classic cocktail.
Try this place.
You’ll be glad you did.
The hanger steak pizza and fried chicken sliders were delicious. Fun drink menu as well. Will definitely go back!
Great location to MSG. Our waiter answered all our questions thoroughly and timed dinner so we
could make it to our show. The atmosphere was cozy and noise level was minimal. The food wasn't chef level but satisfactory. Overall, it was a great experience and would recommend this restaurant.
Such a good vibe with the decor and lighting, food was great
Enjoyed our meal
Exelent food, bar service was great. Ruth was great!
Nice ambiance, very good service, but wish the lunch menu was more extensive.
Great for a lunch or dinner near dreaded Time Square. Cocktails are fantastic and the food is solid. Also really nice atmosphere.
Cool space but food was average.
Good food and atmosphere, excellent service - but acoustically bright.
Wonderful experience. Will be a regular for me
The cauliflower fritters were not cooked
Sunday brunch. They have a boozy option but we didn’t do it. The food is better than decent and I’d go back just for the fact that it’s one of the few places I’ve found to get brunch where you 1. Don’t have to scream over crowds or throbbing music to hear your tablemate 2. Don’t have to be a contortionist to fit into your seat because they’ve crammed so many tables in. Prices are commensurate with the lame Herald Square area. I’ll be back.
My boyfriend and I sat at the bar for brunch and had a great experience. Not only were the food and cocktails delicious, but the bartender was probably the most pleasant nyc bartender I’ve ever experienced. I wish I got her name but she was super helpful, friendly and on top of whatever we needed. Highly recommend this place for a casual date or a girls brunch/night.
Food was great, ambiance was great, service was great. Good for business or personal meal.
Consistently wonderful service and food. Inventive menu. A bright spot in the garment district.
Amazing as usual! Best spot in midtown
The drinks and food are amazing and the service was really quick. The El Guapo is one of my favorite drinks. The Mac and cheese and Margherita pizza were delicious.
Our visit to the Rag Trader was a lovely experience. The food was delicious and since we were a party of 9(originally 7) we were able to try several different entrees and no-one was disappointed! Our waiter, West, was attentive, but not too attentive ,and very personable. The restaurant decor and ambiance make for a relaxing and comfortable night out.
Consistent as always. Service was great. I will absolutely be back!!
This place was great!!! The food was delicious and the service was spot on.
Lou, our waiter was amazing!!!
Excellent small plates. Get the cauliflower fritters. Tuna was fabulous. Great vibe, excellent service.
Loved this place - a rare restaurant that's not hyper-expensive or take out in this dumpy area (Herald Square). Love the theme (garmento) in this area and the chairs/booths are super-comfortable and beautiful. The ambiance and service are top-notch, above average for this mid-level restaurant, same with the well-rounded menu. Loved it, I'll be back.
The food was nothing special and the drinks seems to not have enough alcohol. The restaurant has a cool interior, but the food was nothing special and not a great value.
Very nice restaurant - great atmosphere!
Great find near Herald Square
My daughter and I were in the city visiting colleges. We were exhausted from the day and almost ordered room service but we decided we should take advantage of the city and go out. We chose rag trader because of the reviews and that it was close to our hotel. When we walked in, the front of the restaurant was very loud and I was worried that we wouldn’t even be able to hear each other, but they put us in the back and it was much more quiet. The bourbon drink I had was great and the chicken dish was fantastic. My daughter had a pasta dish with mushrooms that she really liked. We left relaxed and ready to walk around some more!
I would go Friday or Saturday night. Hit the Bo Peep and the burlesque.
The food was amazing and service was even better. Loved the bottomless option. I would definitely recommend this place for groups.
Food was great!! The host and our waiter s were both very personable and attentive. Loved the cauliflower steak, Brussels sprouts, specialty truffle pizza, Burratta and choices of wine! We’ll certainly be back!
Met here due to proximity to Penn Station as I live in Boston. Met up with childhood friends and had a wonderful experience. Good eats, great drinks, and phenomenal service. Looking forward to next time!
Great meal! Brussels, Sweet Potato fries and cauliflower crust pizza!
It felt like the wait staff was rushing us to order, eat, and turn the table over. They were polite in a forced kind of way.
Loved this restaurant. Staff is amazing, our waiter was on top of everything. Food was really good. I will be back.
I absolutely LOVED the atmosphere of this restaurant. The old timey, industrial, but still modern vibes are so awesome and all of the details and remnants of the old garment factory really being everything to life. The brunch menu had really great options, including the 2 hour unlimited booze selections. The only complaint we had was the service as the restaurant was pretty empty while we were there but we often had to flag down our waiter for another round of drinks, salt & pepper, etc. They also seemed to be in a rush for us to leave even though there were a million tables available and no one waiting to be seated. Otherwise, the food & the ambiance were awesome and I would love to go back!
