The Puffing Billy Inn
We offer a dynamic, seasonal menu of locally sourced produce inside a cosy, recently revamped stylish interior. We change our menus regularly and have a daily changing specials board utilising local produce. On Sundays we offer a superb selection of roast dinners.
Our bar offers a wide range of drinks which include an interesting range of soft drinks, regularly changing real ales, an extensive wine list, over 100 spirits and a full coffee menu.
Dogs are welcome in the bar and timber area of the restaurant, the garden and outside. We do not allow dogs in our main restaurant.
We welcome customers who wish to come in for a drink or a coffee in either our bar area, secluded rear garden or at the front of the building where you can watch the world go by. We have bike parking for our more energetic punters and for the little ones there is also an excellent play area across the road.

A wonderful evening at The Puffing Billy. The staff worked tirelessly to look after everyone, making sure our orders were on the way and being really courteous despite the clearly busy day. There was a loud group behind us and they dealt with their rudeness really well. I would recommend trying to get a table next to one of the heaters otherwise it's pretty chilly.
In strange circumstances this pub/restaurant came up trumps with both service and food. Not a very warm evening but staff were handing out blankets as required.
Service was very good and friendly and food was good quality.
Would definitely go back again when in the area.
Great food and nice atmosphere with friendly service. Was quite cold under the cover on a nice warm day but at least you know you won’t get wet when it rains.
The staff were bubbly and friendly. Food was great! Thank you.
Food and service was excellent. Highly recommended.
Always superb food and wine with excellent service
Lovely venue for lunch in garden and for a takeaway lunch because there is an amazing children’s play opposite with picnic tables opposite . Food was average on this occasion. Fish cakes were a bit cold and would have liked a bit more fish and bit less potato. However we have enjoyed our food here several times before and eating warm food outside would not be the choice in April but covid has made this only option.
Very pleasant sat in the garden under canvass. All Covid rules being followed and we were very well looked after.
We had a lovely evening, delicious food and great atmosphere. The staff were super friendly and it was so good to be out!
My only feedback would be for some healthier menu options 👍
Thanks Puffing Billy - we will be back
Good food as of past visits but this time the wait for food to arrive from first sitting to order to food arriving was a little too long.
Great ambience with friendly and efficient staff. Good choice was good and we were pleased with our various choices. Would have given 5 stars if they hadn’t run out of beer but we sympathise that they were overwhelmed with demand.
We have been to the Puffing Billy many times previously and always been pleased. Under current circumstances it was as good as it could have been Eating outside not ideal yet
Took 25 minutes to be given a menu and had to remind waiter about the drink I'd ordered. Very poor service... at least 4 or 5 staff members wandering around covering about 8 tables. Thought about walking out... i would have done if it was just me. Ended up ordering just a starter, so i was sat there for just over an hour and had one drink and one starter. They need to train their staff if they want to increase sales! And there was only one vegetarian option, and bad tinny music playing in the background. Wouldn't hurry back.
The food has taken quite a while, starter and main arrived at the same time, it was obs cold outside so main gone cold for those with soup starter. Mains were disappointing at £15.
We went for our new years eve (a day early as we were about to go into lock down again, they called us to offer to go in that night and gave us a time of our choosing which was fantastic) so it was very busy so the service was a bit slower than usual but that's forgivable with the day that we went. It wasn't loud with stupid people it was a nice atmosphere though I was slightly cold. The food was good. I had the tagliatelle which was nice but not something I'd rush to go back for. My partner had the soup from the special board, sweet potato and chilli which was lovely! I always love the gins there though and such a lovely pub and the staff are very nice
We have eaten here many times a s the food is always great and service very good .
Great atmosphere, felt COVID safe, lovely food and service
Lovely Festive set menu, that was very good value for money. We had 2 courses for £22.95 each, plus a bottle of Malbec and I thought was a very good deal at £70. Crackers on the table were a nice touch as was the roaring fire.
I had the pan fried hake with fennel and roasted potatoes - the staff were very accommodating to remove chorizo from mine as I am a pescetarian, and hubby had the rump steak. It was slightly underdone, but better that thsn over, tbh!
We both had the treacle tart, which was mildly disappointing, the pastry had a soggy bottom. But the ice cream was delicious, and again they accommodated our fussiness by substituting ginger ice cream instead of cinnamon for hubby.
Ideal venue for travelling by public transport too, the train from Exeter and Exmouthboth stop 5 mins walk away at Exton (request stop).
Will definitely go again.
Very nice but took a while for someone to come over (table service required due to covid)
We were put onto table 1 which was beside a door where the staff were constantly in and out
This was when much nicer tables were empty
However after our starters the waitress kindly offered to move us
Food is always good here
Thank you. We had a lovely evening. Good food and made to feel very safe and welcome. Good luck in 2021
Generous Christmas menu lunch cooked perfectly and served with a smile. Roast beef succulent and vegetarian parcel a winner. Also Belgian chocolate delice highly recommended for dessert.
Excellent food with good ambience, efficient service and an overall great experience. Recommend the Christmas lunch.
Not as good as previously. Sat near toilet door qite breezy when people in and out. Moved restaurant was not much warmer. Food mushroom sauce so thin just left pile of mushrooms. Turkey Gravy too thin. Cabbage too sweet. Roast pots not roasted enough and turkey had grisly bits but good portion. Only one drink as noone asked if we wanted another. If first time would not rush back everything just average when we know they are better than this.
Always lovely food and atmosphere here. Lovely at Christmas especially! Traditional, cosy pub feel; super tasty food, Good portion sizes and LOTS of gluten-free options
Nice looking pub, pleasant ambience, friendly and helpful staff. Covid arrangements easy to follow without being obtrusive. We had a light lunch of sandwiches with chips: thick-sliced doorstop style bread and very tasty fillings. We shared a belgian chocolate brownie for dessert, which was easily enough for two. Main dishes being brought to other diners were nicely presented - people at neighbouring table enjoyed theirs.
Recommended.
We love the Puffin Billy, it’s a lovely treat for the family.
The food was frankly pretty poor both in taste and execution. Will not return under current regime.
Excellent food and staff at a reasonable price .Nicely decorated for Christmas but was lacking the usual roaring fires which made it a bit cold ,especially when the back door was left open when serving the outside area
Amazing food, the staff were really friendly great service. Sat next to the warm fire. Really lovely evening
Great food and service in a nice environment with log fires and good choice of beer and wine.
Always good going there! Food is amazing and good atmosphere! Lovely outside area too!
Lovely country pub with two cosy fires. Also great covered garden with heaters.
Food very good we had sunday roast which wasn't very hot but they soon fixed that and was lovely. Great steak and chips and good affordable wine.
would definitely recommend nice friendly staff too.
Adult food was great, kids meals were a little overcooked.
Staff very welcoming and pleasant but service very slow.
Overall an enjoyable experience.
Good food, excellent service . Overall a lovely place to eat . Pleasant and helpful staff .
Nice atmosphere, the staff are really friendly and welcoming. The food is really and also nicely decorated for Christmas!
First class as always. Staff are very welcoming, polite and professional in these challenging times. Food always good quality for a reasonable price. Don't want to big them up too much as won't be able to get a table !
Great little pub. In a nice location. Food was lovely, although maybe a little on the expensive side. However worth the money :)
Service was great considering impact of COVID. A little on the slow side, but waitresses very accommodating and serving with a smile.
Lovely evening spent with my fiancé as a lockdown restrictions were relaxed, and tier 2 restrictions observed.
Would definitely recommend
Really lovely small pub - friendly staff - visited several times and sat inside both in bar and restaurant . Have also had a takeaway lunch in the park opposite .
Lovely food great service. Thank you
For great service in trying times.
