Seated 10 minutes later than reservation. Service from host stand, bus persons, and server were polite and attentive. Menu was a bit overwhelming with great choices. Server was able help us come up with 3 great menu options. Coffee and waffle dessert were great as well.
I've been wanting to go here ever since it was featured in Anthony Bourdain's show. It did not disappoint! The food was insanely good. The flavors of everything was super vibrant. Definitely going back and trying something different. Also they had amazing service. Our BBQ carrots came out a little late and they gave us fries to snack on while we waited. They also covered the cost for both!
This is a great place for a group. You order multiple plates that can be shared, it's a great way to experience foods that you would not ordinarily try. It can get crowded and if you have to share a table it could make for an interesting night. Overall, very good food and experience.
We came from out of town on a recommendation from a friend. Our waiter was great he took time to go over the menu and proceeded to give us some extra plates on the house! The Potted Rillettes were amazing!
Has something for everyone. Fun place to gather. Chef’s tasting is top notch. Can’t wait to go back and grateful they also have a spot at the airport.
We, two women, were given the worst table at 6:30 and had reservations for several weeks.
This place is always good and we try to visit when in Chicago! Great food, great staff and great drinks!
The food and service were excellent! The food choices were wonderful and fun to try!
The Publican brunch was great! I’d read some reviews online and was extremely impressed. My only disappointment was we’d come after a long run and were pretty hungry and the portions are on the smaller size.
Hands down, one of the best brunches I’ve had. The red wine poached eggs and Cajun sausage were absolutely amazing!
Good cocktails but the food was subpar. The waiter seemed too busy to care or check in with us almost like we were a bother to him at times.
I had no idea this would be the best food experience of my life! Every dish was perfectly prepared! I would add this restaurant to my go to place for every visit to Chicago. Wish I lived closer so I could go more often. I wonder if the owners/chefs would be willing to open a Publican in Atlanta... "hint, hint!"
Very loud and energetic place. Personally I don't like the fact that each table isn't private on top of the fact that it's loud. Food was good, a little expensive.
Fun food options great for sharing. Offered top oyster selections that you will see in Boston. Kraft beers were ok. Dessert and tea was a nice close to the dinner.
We had Chef’s table and food was excellent -- and lots of it. It’s a really loud place where you have to shout to be heard across table. And our waiter was just ok -- we saw so little of him that during a multi course meal we had a pre-dinner cocktail (that arrived after first course) and one beer each. (He didn't have to bring our food out.)
We've been here a number of times and we were excited to go back, but the service from start to finish was comically bad. It started with the hostess who acted like we were bothering her when we checked ourselves in 8 minutes early. We have been told at other OpenTable restaurants that our profile says "always on time". I can't tell you if she could see that but, because the other half of our 4-top wasn't there yet, we got a condescending "We only seat complete parties". Fine, it's a lame policy for a large restaurant where you have a reservation, I thought to myself as I looked at the 25% occupied dining room, but, whatever, that's your schtick. I look around the corner to where there used to be a standing bar area, but that's gone now. So we stand in the vestibule/penalty box instead of buying 2 bonus cocktails at a bar or our table. Long story short, our dining companions had an epically bad uber situation got, dropped off blocks from the restaurant and ended up being late. When our party was complete, the hostess goes full-on circa 2009 Violet Hour bouncer and won't acknowledge me. She instead helps multiple people behind me 1st then says we're 2 minutes past the window that they hold a reservation and they have to seat the other people 1st. Once finally seated our waitress was friendly but when we mentioned the allergy that was in our reservation and confirmed by the restaurant, she made no effort to help us with our food selections. We were left to guess what we could order and trust that she would tell the kitchen, which ultimately they accommodated. After all this the food was very good, but then she forgot our last dish. It was fine, we were full enough. But it was completely befitting the entire experience. Bottom line, we live here and Chicago is full of excellent alternatives. I mean, they have a location at T3 in O'Hare. They're not that special, but man do they act like it. We're forgiving people but this was unforgivable.
The service was great we had a helpful knowledgeable waiter who was a lot of fun. When the food came it was amazing. So fresh. I would highly recommend going there. I’d love to go back for dinner! It’s very casual I could definitely see someone taking a family there.
One of the best places to eat in Chicago. We visit every time we are here and recommend it to all our friends who come ( and they end up loving it also).
The Publican never disappoints. I've been here on numerous occasions over the last years for birthdays, brunch, or just a nice meal out with friends. The food is creative and tasty without getting too weird. What you get in front of you will undoubtedly impress beyond the menu description. The service is also consistently attentive without going overboard. Definitely worth going to for the first time or the tenth!
Best meal I've ever had in a restaurant start to finish. Period.
Amazing food. Good service when they came around but had to hunt for someone to give me a fork, change my plate for another course etc.
It’s communal seating and sadly the narcissist sharing our table was loud and tedious.
Great Business Meal. Great for out of town folks . Fun place to take a group of friends. Great Energy !!
We did the $65 Chef menu because we had never been to Publican and didn't understand the sizes. We were told the courses would keep on coming until we told them to stop. That wasn't quite true (because we were not going to cry uncle first!) because they did finally bring a dessert course and told us this was the end (and we were stuffed!). The food was delicious and creative. You won't find another experience like it in Chicago. We loved the private booth with a half door to top of the seating benches. Service was spot on - great team approach. We were not placed in the communal seating (which was fine). Lively place in the happening area of town. You need to try this place at least one time.
Always love coming to the Publican, however, the seating needs to be rethought. To sit a couple on a date in between two large, loud groups at a communal table is not only awkward but it's very unappealing when the hostess gives you attitude. Next time I am going to reserve a Table for 4, just so we are guaranteed our own booth/high top.
Great good; great service!
The food was amazing
Nephew and I share a birthday so when business travel brings me to Chicago we make a point to share a meal and catch up.
The Publican hit the spot! My wife even surprised us with signed copies of the “cookbook” - they were waiting at the table when we arrived.
I have never been disappointed with a visit to a Chef Kahan establishment.
It was amazing as usual, just can’t wait till next time!
We had a very good meal at Publican. The communal dining experience was fun and the vibe is lively. Service was a little slow at first. Once he got going it was fine. I think it helped that we asked him to surprise us with four dishes; he appreciated the opportunity to showcase their menu and his selections were excellent! Four dishes were plenty for the two of us.
We tried the "chef's choice" and were very happy with the experience. There was an enormous amount of food including fresh oysters, succulent hake, fresh beet salad, and yummy pork belly. Definitely a great deal.
Love the enclosed table for four.
Eating a wonderful meal with excellent service is exactly what you get when dining at The Publican. The pork shoulder is the best
It was great
Amazing food. I wish you had a choice other than communal dining
We went here to meet a friend in town for business. This restaurant was a great choice, as we all love delicious food, wine and well-made cocktails, in a fun atmosphere. You can find both “healthy” and indulgent dishes here and all are fantastic! Great restaurant choice! One of the best meals we’ve had in Chicago while living here.
We had a great time. We loved the food and service. It was my sons 30th birthday. And the pudding caramel dessert was amazing. Thanks. We will come back soon.
Brunch was delicious! Cocktails were fun and light, food was a perfect portion and sooo tasty. Would absolutely go back, can't wait to try dinner there!
the salad I had was outstanding , so fresh tasting! My husband fried pork was delicious The bloody marys are the best We make sure we stop and eat before we go back to Indiana It is worth taking the time
I don't think we will be going back, which is unfortunate because we have been a couple times before and had great experiences. I took my girlfriend here for brunch on her birthday and despite requesting a table just for the two of us when asked what we'd prefer, they ended up sitting someone with us towards the end of our meal. We weren't at the community table. There were plenty of seats at the community table & bar, and there were also plenty of open tables. We had planned on ordering another round of drinks and some sides but the stranger at our table basically killed our intimate conversation. Our new table mate seemed uncomfortable too. So we left after only being there for about 30 minutes. The whole thing felt rushed and it was pretty disappointing.
Terrible place for dates.
The food was very good - except for the waffle. It was very hard and all but shattered to dust when trying to cut it up.
