What Insiders Are Saying
The Publican is a Medieval styled mecca of all things beer, pork, and oysters. If that's not appealing, you can't sit with us.
The food was delicious!
Favorite restaurant in Chicago.
I was here last year for my birthday and it was fantastic. Came back again hoping for the same and was rather disappointed. Food was lackluster and uninspired.
Food as always was amazing and service was great. It gets pretty loud but it works for the atmosphere of the restaurant.
Amazing experience! Our waiter was very accommodating. Get the bourbon cream at the end of your meal! It’s to die for.
Great birthday celebration. Wonderful service and food
Overall Great experience! There was 5 of us and the restaurant was pretty good at accommodating us. I loved the food.
Our service was outstanding.
Food is solid - standouts were the Bloody Mary and the fried potatoes with mustard and ricotta salata. The ambiance is not great, though. Tight, communal seating and deafening noise.
We had the chefs menu and it was incredible. Every dish was a large portion and tasted delicious. The waiters were awesome. A must try restaurant if visiting Chicago!
The Publican is everything it is touted to be and MORE. I will highly recommend The Chef's Choice for dinner, especially if you consider yourself a Foodie/Connoisseur. The plates come family style to be shared, which adds to the fellowship. Each dish is as simple and complex at the same time, using sometimes very few fresh ingredients that the Chef works together to build unexpected flavors that excite the palate and please the stomach. The Publican is a must visit whether a local or traveling. You will be happy you came!
Food was great. Portions are small although they are for sharing. The food we ordered were cold plates. If you are looking for warm dishes this may not be good for you. Food was overall on the salty side due to the hams.
Amazing hospitality food and love. Second time here even better
Great food. Wide range of ok beer. Limited wines served in tumblers. I thought we were past that stupid trend.
Everything we tried was delicious, and the waitress was able to provide great recommendations.
I LOVE Publican bacon historically but this last time was just OK.
The food was very good, the bloody mary I had was great. Typical prices for the location and style of the restaurant, very reasonable. The communal seating style is a bit odd, but definitely not an issue.
Love the sharing plates style and trying a little bit of everything.
Ate at The Publican before Hamilton on Saturday- it blew us out of the water! The Harvest Moon craft cocktail was perfectly balanced and a beautiful way to start the meal! The oysters- so fresh and delicious. Home made bread + sea salt butter, omfg. Pork belly literally melt in our mouth, and did I mention the homemade crispy pork rinds?! Our server was a gem, and got us in and out with plenty of time to see the show! Grateful for a wonderful experience.
I ordered a pork chop entree. One of them was very sinewy and tough.
We ordered a cauliflower and a sweet potato dish for sharing. If you like a vegetable dish that doesn't taste anything like the vegetable this place might be for you.
Food was delicious, served hot, using ingredients you wouldn’t normally blend together. End results are tastes and flavors that are mouth watering.
The entree portions are generous as are the prices.
My problem was the ambience. Communal tables - good for a group but bad if you are a couple sitting next to that group. More two tops. But it’s the NOISE. Lots of noise is supposed to create “buzz” but have you ever asked your customers if they would like to talk in a normal voice, rather than screaming. You might be surprised that your current customers and new ones would prefer an “adult” restaurant.
Perhaps they were having an off night because we've heard so much about this place, but in our experience it was not worth the price. The Charcuterie was too fatty and all tasted exactly the same, the wine was average and served in juice glasses, and the rest of the food was just okay. The service was fine. The music selection was fantastic but wayyyy too loud... We could barely hear each other at the table. I'd try it again, but not soon.
Great food, but the white wines were very ODD. Otherwise, the meal was excellent.
Insanely intimate, friendly, approachable and good. Do not miss.
In celebrating our anniversary we decided to do the tasting menu. The Publican being known for its meat, I expected to have at least a couple of meat dishes. There was 1 dish that was supposed to be the Porchetta but it consisted of just 2 pcs of bacon. $65 pp for veggies at a meat restaurant. I contacted the restaurant to see if there was a mix up if we received some sort of vegetarian menu instead, however, received no response. The service was great, however, not worth the price and when requesting a meat tasting menu, I expect a couple of the 7 meat dishes featured on their menu. Friends have done the tasting menu and raved about it. Not sure if it was an off night, but at $65 pp, that range of an off night should not occur.
Birthday celebration. Has the broccoli, which was PHENOMENAL. Charcuterie board was meat based and delicious. Sirloin was cooked to good medium rare and flavorful. Chicken was well-cooked and moist, could use more flavor or addition of a sauce of sorts.
Coffee to finish was good.
Excellent experience. Communal style dining so you will be seated next to and engaging with strangers, which is odd until someone offers you food. In our case, the couple next to us commented how good the bread was, I asked my friend if we should get the bread because the couple next to us remarked how good it was, said couple over heard me and then offered us their bread.
Beer selection is massive. Servers are extremely knowledgeable. Vegetables were amazing (beer sold) and the pork belly may have been the best I have ever eaten and was also appropriate to the season (apples and pomegranates in fall). Service was flawless, my water glass never ran dry. Highly recommend this place unless you are on an intimate date, breaking up with someone, or a secret spy.
We had a large group and opted for the Chefs menu for ease of decisions. It was great! Lots of food and diverse menu choices.
Great food as always a little pricey and tad loud but always a great time
Went to Publican Friday night to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday, and it was a great choice. The food and beer were amazing. A squash dish was just as delicious as the pork belly. Excellent, friendly service. We like loud guitars, so the music was great, and, sure it's a loud place, but conversation was still easy. In my fantasy life we are at Publican once a month!
Great experience at Publican on Friday. Very good food but don’t come here if your looking for healthy food. Heavy on Pork dishes and the dishes are large and perfect for sharing. The pork rib was excellent as well as the taste of Virginia ham. The mussels were large and enough to split between 3 of us. The bbq carrots were excellent. The Porchetta was good not great but very filling. The beer list is excellent and come here during happy hour and get oysters for cheap. Beer list was great and enjoyed our dinner. Wouldn’t come here if you want quiet conversation. It gets loud in here but great place for friends to share dishes.
Very good food, but be prepared to yell to the person next to you as the acoustic treatments in the space are non-existent. Also be prepared to fend off their server trying to over sell what your table will need to fill itself up. If you're used to that, then this is a great place to network in Chicago.
Also, my noise rating is 'energetic'. They don't have a category of ' too noisy' but that's what it is at prime time.
Great menu with a lot of vegetable choices. Our favorite was the roasted delicata squash- tender and flavorful. The oyster platter was also good, and the trio of spreads with bread was yummy. Our least favorite was the whiting- the fish meat was delicious but serving the fish whole meant lots of bones and work. Nice drink menu with interesting choices. Be ready to shout over the din!
Great food. Unfortunately was sat near the door, so it was a bit chilly. Overall, I love going to the Publican. The food is always amazing and the service impeccable.
Great experience, made our time so special ! Server was great :)
the only thing I wish you would bring back is the french pressed coffee
I’m sure people love this place but it was not for me. We had a reservation but still got seated elbow to elbow between 2 other couples at a long community table. It was so loud that my poor husband didn’t bother to try to talk to me and I had to use my menu as a rolled up megaphone to talk to him. Food was fine but not worth $100 w/o drinks. Tasting menu was already sold out so options were limited. Menu not really explanatory enough. Just not for us.
The food was awful across the board. Pork that was cooked very unevenly, ranging from dry as a board to raw in the center. Beef that had been sous vide to preserve the appearance of succulence...only to be grilled beyond any shred of tenderness on the other side. Meat served at room temperature with cold vegetable accompaniment. This was a shameful kitchen performance, not even close to befitting the price point and reputation.
Do. Not. Eat. Here.
