Very low key pleasant neighborhood restaurant. Attractive uncrowded interior, lots of natural light, friendly service. Food the real story! Quite good! Moist salmon, tender & flavorful short ribs, reasonable (not wasteful) portion size. We’ll be baaack......
Had the dine LA menu. Everything on it was delicious. Loved the burrata salad and brussel sprouts. The ahi salad was great and we had very polite and friendly service!
Fabulous neighborhood spot. Excellent food in a cozy environment. Was my first time here, but will be back?
Good food and drinks. Friendly service. Loud though. Nice decor
Service was top notch. Food was very good. Enjoyed the cocktails. Portions are good and they don't cheat on the drinks. I will return.
Warm greeting, friendly staff, attentive wait staff, great food!
New ownership: Rick Anderson and David Yost have greatly improved the food offerings (we went for Sunday brunch) while retaining the wonderful ambiance created by the previous owner. They are pushing a very quiet opening; wander in during the summer and take a look. It is a great addition to the LCF dining scene.
A wonderful brunch experience from the lovely ambiance, to friendly server, to delicious food. We will be returning very soon for dinner.
From the minute you walk into The Proper you know you are in a special place. We were greeted by a smiling face and were immediately seated. Within seconds we had menus and water. We were lucky enough to be seated in Ali's section and she was fantastic. Very attentive, helped us choose from the menu and was always nearby. The food was fantastic. We started with the brussel sprouts which light, crispy and full of flavor. My friend and I shared the Rib Eye (upon Ali's reco) and it was amazing as was the au gratin potatoes served with it. We almost didn't get them so we could eat "healthy", but those potatoes didn't last long on the table. They were AMAZING!! The prices were just right and the cocktails and wine were fantastic. Can't wait to go back and I would recommend this fantastic restaurant to everyone!
First, we love the idea of the Proper - La Canada needs a good restaurant. Glad they've got new owners. Dinner there Saturday night; great drinks I ordered the $35 fish special [yellowtail]. Overcooked, dry, surrounded by bland potatoes and broccoli. Waitress was trying hard but I think she knew it wasn't up to par. C'mon Proper - don't slide backwards!
Consistently delicious with a professional accomodating staff.
Very glad new owners!
The original restaurant, went once- had no reason to go back. This was our 4th visit since new ownership-
2 lunches, 2 dinners. Tonight ordered daily fish- I’m not a huge fan of cod, but it was cooked to perfection accompanied by Meyer lemon risotto and charred asparagus- was delicious!
Wine by the glass somewhat limited, however have some wines that won’t easily find by the glass
Cocktails are excellent
Service is attentive. So happy to have this restaurant in our neighborhood!
Great food. The fried chicken was truly amazing. Love the deviled eggs too.
a wonderful evening! so happy The Proper is back and better than ever - delicious drinks, yummy food (Chicken Piccata for me, steak for him). La Canada needed a good American fare restaurant and The Proper brings it big time!
The Proper has an exceptional chef who delivers delicious, creative dishes without going far out with creativity. The bar scene is lively and friendly without being crazy. Highly recommended!
Rather small portions for the price. The fish I had was very good.
Came here for Mother’s Day brunch, first time at the Restaurant and apparently the Restaurants first time serving brunch. They get a 10 out of 10 from me. Seriously, everything about this little gem of a restaurant was perfect, from the ambiance, the food, to the service, truly impeccable. The people who work and run this establishment truly seem to care about the work they are putting in, which shows in everything that is put out from the front to back of house. Everything was absolutely perfect, I’m so happy we found this place, I can’t wait to go back and try out everything else on the menu for lunch and dinner.
The food was good, servers were nice but it was to noisy and close to other tables to enjoy a conversation.
The food was fresh and delicious. all of us loved the cauliflower soup!
First time having the happy hour menu, it was delightful and the small plates were the perfect size. Nice flavors, nice quality and ambiance. A local go to spot.
Overall, we’re very happy with the “new” Proper. One suggestion I have is that if you’re going to serve a Caesar salad, you provide anchovies. Maybe the original salad only had them in the dressing, but most higher-end restaraunts place some atop the salad. The salad was very tasty, but I miss the addition of white or other anchovies. Thank you.
Proper has re-opened, and we are happy. New chef has excellent skills, loved the pasta on Saturday, and another had wonderful sea bass. Our server, Erica, was attentive & informative, which we appreciated. We relax there, knowing that the quality of the food and service can be depended upon.
We went after seeing the reviews on Yelp. My husband and I both had fish (salmon and sea bass). Both entrees were good —well balanced flavors. Other reviews raves about the crab bites. They were good but really nothing special. We wound try other options next time. We will definitely go again. The service was good. Ambiance was friendly and lively. Good neighborhood spot.
Kitchen was so very slow rest was good for a local restaurant and evening. Our Caprese took over 20 minutes to be prepared. Our waiter just shrugged as he had no explanation for the delay. Mindful that we we’re there early 5:30 to make a nearby event.
Probably give it another go.
The service was very slow.
This new hip restaurant is a hidden gem! I have been there twice this week and everyone loved their meals. Specials and drink menus keep getting better! They also offer a fun happy hour daily with a great sampling of their sharing menu and wines. Will definitely visit this beautiful restaurant often!
Proper is nice without being stuffy. The server was excellent and Proper features a creative menu. The special appetizer was excellent.
Has the right vibe to be the place that you want to be your regular spot. However, on the whole it is just okay--nothing super stellar to report. The service was slow overall, and not entirely attentive, but not unfriendly or unhelpful. The winter menu was still on offer and had a good range of homey-comfort options like chicken piccata, short rib, or salmon. There's also a daily fish special which was barramundi that day. Modest portion sizes that don't feel overwhelming, well-prepared, but just not special.
We decided to try this restaurant because it was in our neighborhood. We were very impressed to say the least. The cauliflower hummus with pita bread was excellent, very flavorful. I had the Garlic Chicken Carbonara which could have more garlic if you ask me but the sauce was excellent. My husband chose the braised short ribs which were so-so. We've had better but for a place near us, I think we will try this again and choose other dishes.
The best REBOOT of THE PROPER!! Server Adam and Bartender Joe are fantastic.
The service was so so, we asked if there were items on the menu to avoid and the server was forthright in sharing his least favorite items, one such item was the crispy chicken sandwich which he said tended to be dry. I asked about the fried chicken and he said it was not dry so I ordered it. Guess what? It was dry. My dining partner had the duck special which she loved however we would have appreciated being told upfront that it was a $40.00 meal. Additionally, we asked if a wedge salad could be split and were told yes only to have a different server bring the salad and were told that the restaurant didn't do that. I wouldn't call the noise level energetic, I felt is was noisy. At one point we had to ask our server to request that the owner take his personal conversation to another location because he was standing and talking with others very loudly next to our table. I will say the drinks were outstanding. I guess if I ever go back it will be just for a cocktail.
Salad was outstanding!
Under new ownership since January 2019, the restaurant has an all new menu and two new chefs. The menu is more extensive and interesting. The food was delicious and the presentation impressive. Their limited wine options were excellent and the prices were fair. Our server was exceptional and one of the two owners sat down with us for 15 minutes and we chatted about food in general. I got tired of the limited menu in the previous iteration of the restaurant and I stopped going there. With the "new" Proper, I will be going back often and am telling my friends about our wonderful experience there.
So happy that the Proper is back...better than ever..Lovely and interesting menu and specials..perfect portions for lunch! Friendly staff..We will be back..for sure
We really enjoy the Proper it’s a go to place for our family.
The food overall was about a 7 on a ten point scale. Pretty good, but not great. For instance, I ordered one of the hamburgers, and requested "medium-rare", and received it "medium-well"; my wife's shrimp in her dish were tough and a little dry. The area which really was lacking was the service. Service was the downfall of the "previous" Proper Restaurant. I appears that not much has changed in that regard. I would conditionally recommend Proper to a friend, after proper disclaimers so that their expectations are managed.
Love this place, we keep going back
Grabbed lunch with a dear friend. It was a lovely time.
While the good was good (not stellar) and the service was very good, the ambience was ruined by two things:
1. The smell of cleaner—floor cleaner?—when we walked in was overpowering. It was much less in our booth in the back of the café side, but I could still smell it.
2. On a weeknight with only three other tables seated, it was so loud my dining partner and I had to repeat ourselves multiple times. Not pleasant.
The old incarnation of The Proper was decent. Nice bar, good food, not a huge selection to my tasting, but we were disappointed to see it shut down.
When we heard that the location was re-opening with new ownership, etc. we were excited, and hoped it would be as good as before. We were very pleasantly surprised to find a wider menu, and on this, our first (but not last) visit to the new Proper that it had really improved greatly since we were here before.
Everything was good. I had the Cajun Ribeye, my girlfriend had a market fish special, which she really enjoyed... and she doesn't usually do fish. The drinks were excellent.
