just a fun place to have dinner and drinks
we will be back
Everything was delicious. The Manhattan cocktail was soooo good. Fish special and salad—amazing. Crab cake appetizer was the best I’ve had.
I took three friends for lunch before a JPL tour and we had a wonderful time. Ryelle was a fabulous server and understood our time constraints. The drinks, apps and entrees were all served promptly and with a smile! The shaved Brussel sprouts were perfectly crispy and well seasoned, and the deviled eggs were good - but could have used a sprinkle of salt/acid. The fish tacos, French dip sandwich and lunch combo were an excellent value and very yummy. All in all, a lovely lunch in a gorgeous setting with exceptional service!!
I thought the food was excellent, as well as the ambience
Overall, my nephew and his wife and I had a lovely dining experience. The beer list was short but varied, and choices for vegetarians were good. My nephew’s wife’s Caesar salad was dressed rather heavily, but all other food choices (the soup, the fish, and the sides I put together to make my vegetarian meal) were presented well and were delicious. The bread was outstanding!
Had reservations for 2 on a Sat. Night. Took us immediately, no waiting. Mass of people there (Halloween parties), but as far as I could tell, were as accomodating as possible to everyone. After we were seated, Manager very politely asked if we would mind switching our table because they were trying to service a larger group; no problem - they were very pro about it. Food was very good, server was as well; knowledgable about the menu & food. All staff seemed to hustle and take care of guests. Only drawback was noise level, but as I said ... lots of people. Lots of slightly soused, very happy people. Will return, will continue to explore menu.
Really well prepared fried chicken and risotto dishes at our table. Fresh salads and delicious salt, chocolate pot we creme to finish it off. Nice drinks too!
We came to The Proper Restaurant before an evening event at Descanso. We aren't very familiar with the area, and were looking for something that would feel a bit dressy yet still casual, with good food, good ambience, good service, reasonable prices, and an overall good experience. I'm happy to say that The Proper Restaurant delivered, and we'll be back!
Ambience: Loved the color, texture, lighting, and dark wood. Such a nice break from the white walls, industrial fixtures and maple wood that dominates much of LA. Airy and cozy at the same time, it made us want to stay a while and enjoy our conversation.
Food: Delicious. We started with the deviled eggs, ordered a chicken sandwich with fries for my husband and a veggie sandwich with fries for myself, and finished with a bread pudding. Everything was high quality, tasty and satisfying. I was blown away by the fries, but slightly disappointed that my veggie sandwich fell apart on every bite. It might need something to hold it together. We each got a martini; they were the best we've had in LA by far and some of the best anywhere. Food is not cheap but it's a good value for the LA area.
Service was warm and welcoming from the moment we entered the door. They really seemed to want to make our date night special, and we so appreciated this as it can be hard for us to get away, just the two of us. They also struck the right balance between attentiveness and intrusiveness. They checked on us enough, but also left us to our own conversations without constant interruptions.
Parking: The parking lot was tight but we managed to find a spot and several cars were also leaving. It seems like there is probably *just enough* space. It's free!
Overall, The Proper Restaurant was a pleasant surprise! It really felt like a neighborhood gem, and we'd come back to this neighborhood again just to eat here again.
The food and drinks were great. I especially liked the fried brussels appetizer. The service was very attentive. It took a little while for us to be seated, but once we got to our table we had a great time.
Lovely brunch the food and ambience were both excellent. The service was slow! The noise level was ridiculous but they told us they’re in the process of installing noise baffles.. I’d definitely go back and try it for dinner once they get the decibels under control. Brunch was busy and they looked understaffed causing the slow service. Place is very cute and stylish and the staff was great.
Had a terrific ladies brunch there on Sunday. Food was amazing. Loved the chicken and waffles! The bloody Mary was great too. Thank you.
Hubby and I went for first time in to celebrate our Anniversary. We were pleasantly surprised and pleased we decided to pick someplace new. Service was excellent. All of the food delicious, and cocktails spot on. Hubby says best martinni he's had in 21 years since moving from Chicago. Score🍸We will definitely be going back.
From the moment we arrived till we were heading out the door, we felt welcomed. The wait staff was delightful, the meal delicious and the mood festive. It was a trifle loud, but not overbearing. We got a chance to speak with one of the owners, Rick Anderson, and you could tell this was a labor of love for him and his partners.
We started with cocktails and then tried the wine flight. Our server, Jesse, was attentive and charming, and the support staff very helpful. We ordered the bread and herbed butter, crab cake bites, salads and steaks. We should have only ordered one salad as the they were good sized and we ended up sharing his and I brought mine home. The crab bites are small (literally just one bite each), but they were very good. The steaks were cooked perfectly and the side dish of potatoes were creamy and flavorful. We will definitely be coming back.
Neighborhood gem. Great food, friendly service and energetic vibe.
We had dinner on a Tuesday night so the restaurant was not crowded at all. The veggie salad is the best I've ever had, and of course the cocktails were top-notch. I dragged some pals over there today for lunch and they loved it, too. There is a Trifecta they serve at lunch - soup, salad, half-sandwich - that is really delicious and not expensive. I had the beet and goat cheese salad - it was small but so rich that it was filling. Wait staff was efficient and friendly. All good - we will definitely be back!
Our server Dustin was fantastic! Food was delicious.
I love this restaurant and the food is first rate. But the noise level is deafening. You nearly had to scream to be heard. It’s a happening place and I love that about it but it’s just too noisy even at lunch. Dinner is worse.
Our first time at The Proper! What a great place! Service (thanks Jesse) and food was wonderful! Highly recommend the baked Brie to start. We will definitely be back!
Our server Alicia was fabulous. Nice vibe in restaurant. Drinks plentiful and varied. Deviled eggs and fried chicken the hits of the night. Burrata was beautifully presented and super fresh. Crab bites a bit greasy and a disappointment. We arrived early for our reservation but was seated immediately. We will be back.
Was so glad when this place opened up again. The food is amazing and the drinks are like something out of this world! So masterfully mixed and prepared. Great atmosphere, great food, good service, what more could you ask for?!
We do like Proper and return often. Great server Gordon, thanks for seating me before my dining pal arrived. Food is excellent.
Great food good service very loud
Excellent food and great service! The bar is lovely and had a great selection of drinks. The noise level can get annoying but overall, a great experience.
Great food, great setting, we love going to The Proper!
Loved everything but the noise level. It was too loud for our group of 4 to have a quiet conversation.
Everything was wonderful at the Proper. The food is outstandingly delicious, the service is excellent, the ambiance is clean with a warm and welcoming decor.
We had Brunch at The Proper and really enjoyed the food.
I had the Chilaquiles which were Top 3 all-time.
Terrific food and service. Everything we had was delicious including the deviled eggs, and Brussel sprouts. The fried chicken was incredible. Thanks for a great meal!
Wonderful restaurant for casual dining with friends or family. Excellent service. Nice wine selection. Great food. We love the Brussels sprouts!
Three friends and I took a friend to lunch at The Proper for her birthday. I made reservations through open table and as soon as we arrive we were seated at our table. The waitress was very attentive and even the owner came over to say hi and thanks for coming. We all ordered different luncheon items and they were all delicious. I would recommend the proper to anyone who wants a cozy nice place to have lunch
Just loved being in a fun & glam ‘local’ restaurant x
As always, the cocktails were delicious. We did not care for the Margarita Flatbread appetizer. The cherry tomatoes made a mess and watered down the bread and the melted cheese, so that the cheese dripped everywhere. It also lacked flavor. On the other hand, the service was top notch and the dinner entrees were delicious. I had the chicken piccata and my wife had the angel-hair checca. We were both pleased with those dinners.
Happy Hour on a Thursday - we arrived at 5:00pm to a quiet restaurant. The drinks were delicious, the food fabulous (highly recommend the brussels), and the ambience is classy yet comfortable. An excellent spot for GNO! We will definitely come back!
I made reservations for 5 on a Sunday morning. When I arrived, the table was ready and I was greeted with a smile. The server was extremely pleasant, up beat and so helpful. He had a sense of humor. The food and coffee was delicious. I ordered the french toast this time. It was so good. I prefer mine a little more dry and crisp but it was still a very delicious meal. Last time, I ordered the chiliquiles and that was fantastic. I hope this restaurant does well. I am not sure the word is out that it is under new ownership and is run so much better.
Chicken piccata was tough and the noise level very high.
Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. Food was delicious and plentiful. Service was friendly, helpful and attentive.
Loved having BRUNCH at The Proper. From the cool décor to the amazing servers to the beautifully presented and tasty food, A++++. I especially enjoyed the Mimosa Flight! Can't wait to come back!
This is a delightfully beautiful bar and restaurant located on a quiet area of Foothill Blvd. in La Canada Flintridge. The room divides in half between the very 1950's-style bar with very swanky turquoise bar stools and a restaurant lined with bookshelves with books in that lovely Cape Cod blue and B&W photos of Descanso Gardens looks quite like a sophisticated gentlemen's library in a fancy estate out there. The bar artwork was very 1950's kitschy - an Andy Warhol "How to Foxtrot" poster brought a smile to my face.
The Proper has an eclectic lunch menu executed with both sublime and sophistication. The short ribs sandwich that I had sans bun during Restaurant Week was outstanding - rich, moist and succulent. My friend's fish tacos tasted very fresh and excellently prepared. The heirloom tomato and burratta salad that we had the next visit looked architecturally stunning, and it ended up surprisingly filling even though it didn't look like it would.
Very nice to have a nice neighborhood restaurant in LCF with good food and quiet ambiance. There are not many suitable alternatives. New ownership has improved the menu and the service. Eaten brunch and dinner on several occasions, all meals were a thumbs up. My guests were happy.
