What Insiders Are Saying
The Progress, on Fillmore, is a great time and a good scene, with excellent food.
It was absolutely phenomenal. Probably hands down one of the best meals I have ever had along side their sister restaurant, State Bird Provisions. I took my boyfriend there for his birthday and he was thrilled. Such a great setting, beautiful ambiance and the food is incredible. We got pigs head charcuterie, lamb tartare, artichoke pasta, abalone, and duck. The duck was the best duck I’ve ever had! I would absolutely got there again. Loved the drinks as well and the service was extremely helpful.
Fabulous!!!! This is going to become a regular haunt.
The food was inventive and delicious! Enjoyed the relaxed but animated atmosphere - it looked like every table was having a good time. Restaurant is better with a group, so you can try more small plates and even a platter (THE DUCK - OH MY).
The food was creative and interesting. Presentation was excellent. The cocktails were worth every penny. The price was a bit too high for the food and experience.
Great. The worst we had was way above average. Did not expect drinks to be good but were pleasantly surprised. Recommend Rip-eye if you visit the place.
Food is hit or miss - not like State Bird Provisions where everything is amazing. Half of our meal was great, half was so so. And they brought out a lamb meatball before the fish dish, which was surprising. With so many great restaurants in SF will not plan to be back.
Great place to go on a date, a bit loud, but if you sit close enough you'll be great. Honestly the service was the BEST part of eating dinner there. The staff was incredible. Go for the friendly staff members- they make the experience worth it!
Loved the service and menu, with sharing plates working for our informal meeting. Everything from the oysters, through salads (beats), vegetables (amazing asparagus), halibut and t-bone were excellent
Tables way too close and therefore quite noisy...yet food was fabulous
A warm comfortable atmosphere and delicious food. The highlight was the appetiser "pig’s head charcuterie, asian pear, fish sauce & serranos", a perfect balance of salty, savoury and sweet.
Although the food was good and creatively executed, the 1 Michelin star seems a tad undeserved considering we had to wait for 30 minutes for our meal and the main course was cold by the time it came to us. It was just far too expensive for the quality we received. The space was quite nice though, and the drinks were tasty.
We recently had an outstanding dinner here and frankly there was nothing in the choices, meal progression, quality, or service that I would improve. Each dish had elements of surprise and took our attention away from the people around the table for a few minutes as we all relished what was on our plate. The wine list is incredible and the cocktails were impressive. Definitely a place to put on your list! (One tip - ask for a table in the main dining room. There are a few in the bar area but the space of the dining room is light, airy and relaxing.)
This is so much more than just a restaurant .The food is imaginative, the service divine. This could be my favorite spot in San Francisco, well worth the price. Well worth returning to.
A feast for the palate and the eyes! Innovative fare with original takes on classic comfort food with fresh seasonal seafood and veggies.
Excellent as always. Service is stellar. Food is great. Great wine recommendations. What else could you want?
We were very much looking forward to dining at this restaurant. I made a reservation for 10pm on a Friday night to celebrate a homecoming. We were greeted warmly at the door and seated by a very charming host, Sebastian.
I’m sorry to say that this was pretty much the last enjoyable experience we had at Progress.
The waiter, while not rude, was in a word, disinterested. Our order was taken, wine ordered and the first dish (oysters) showed up a timely fashion. Wine was delayed for some reason. The second course, Brussels sprouts came in a reasonable time frame. The dish was a major disappointment. Sprouts were somewhat crunchy but very oily and covered in too much sauce. The overall effect a porridge with leaves in it.
Then, there was an insanely long wait for the next course, while everyone around us was being served. Finally, the abalone arrived and again, was a major disappointment. The surrounding ingredients, potatoes, radishes? Were fine, but the abalone was tough, chewy, and not particularly flavorful. It clearly appeared to be improperly handled or cooked!
Finally was the roasted and grilled half rabbit, which,. While redeeming, was still disappointing. We’d ordered the dish based on how it appeared at our neighbors table. There it was sliced delicately, fanned out on the plate ... in short, very well presented. When ours arrived, it had the appearance of just being tossed on a plate. The taste was good, trumpet mushrooms figured prominently in the flavor profile. But the rabbit itself was full of gristle, tendon and required indelicate eating practices as we pulled pieces from our mouth with almost every bite.
As we were pretty much “over” this experience, we decided to take the remainder of the rabbit ‘to go.’
When we arrived home, we discovered, that the leftovers had been stuffed into a container too small to hold the food, which leaked, and stained my slacks.
My ‘takeaway’: I would never return to nor recommend this restaurant.
Professional & accomodating service
Amazing evening, our waiter gave us impeccable wine recommendations and each dish was outstanding. So beautifully presented. Interior design is amazing. Standout dishes: the Brussel sprouts (so good we ordered them twice!) and the roti with quail's eggs. So so so good. Will definitely be going back again!
The food is really good and at a good price point. The service is really attentive and friendly. Great cocktails as well.
Our meal at The Progress was simply outstanding. Every bite was delicious from some of the best oysters I have ever eaten to the sublime scallop ceviche to the pasta with ragu to the Black Cod.
The service was mostly good but our server forgot our glass of champagne so we unfortunately did not get to enjoy it with our oysters, which was disappointing. We did appreciate having the half bottle option for enjoying Pinot with the rest of the meal.
We can overlook minor glitches in service to enjoy food that is so expertly prepared and will go back.
Went to The Progress when it first opened a couple years ago with sky high expectations given it relationship to State Bird Provision, my personal favorite restaurant in San Franciso. I was underwhelmed at the time and didn't return until just recently. This time, The Progress delivered. The menu and concept is totally different. The family style dinner service was perfect for the eclectic and delicious offerings. My favorite dish was the liberty duck platter that was deliciously rich and tangy. The service was very good and the ambiance in the restaurant is casual and classy. My one complaint was that the all vegetarian options on the menu were fairly limited, which was tough for the veg in our party; the chef did make a special off menu vegetarian pasta option for her, which was appreciated. All in all a great night out. Will definitely be back.
A dining experience for an incredible price. Highly recommend!
Amazing restaurant with a wonderful ambience. Great food with a comfortable vibe.
Creative cuisine. The Chef's find their inspiration from Asian cuisines. Excellent platter of duck, not inexpensive at $65 plate. The flavors are unique to Progress and the kitchen is excellent at adapting nuts and granola to sprinkle some of the dishes. We tried the ceviche scallops, beet salad, cod with bok choy, a delicious dish as the fish melted in your mouth. The ink squid pasta sauce was full of rich flavor with a saffron colour. Well done!
For dessert, besure to try the cheesecake with guava sauce. A memorable dinner.
Truly unique and special food in a great setting.
Drinks and wine were also on point.
Highly recommended for a special night out.
Delicious food, with particularly great texture!
One of the best restaurants I’ve ever experienced. Bravo!
We had an amazing server who guided us through the evening. She was wonderful. The rolli was delicious! We ordered one too many plates and went home very satisfied.
We had a great meal at The Progress! Everything was incredibly well prepared and thoughtful, highlights included the squid ink cavatelli (one of the best pasta dishes ive had in awhile, very fine and thin noodles, super tasty) and the BBQ duck which was incredible. Thanks to Eunice and the team at The Progress! You all are killing it!
Had an amazing dinner celebrating an anniversary. The staff was very nice, welcoming, and answered all of our questions. We'll definitely be back, there's so much to try on the menu!
OMG! Amazing food. Laid back atmosphere and service but still 5 star. Wonderful cocktails. Definitely coming back.
It’s a marvelous dinner to celebrate birthday. Ambiance is simple but elegant. The server was very experienced and made us feel at home. I loved the entree and small plates. The food were of highest quality. I’ll definitely come back for more.
Fantastic flavors, perfect service. Raw turnip and citrus fruit salad sounds dubious, but it's divine. These folks know what they're doing.
AMAZING FOOD. Amazing service, amazing venue. Just wow!
Fabulous service, food, wine list, the package!!!
My experience dining at The Progress was excellent. From the dynamic menu that reflected the season’s ingredients to the service that never allowed my glass to be empty, I truly had a great dining experience. Not only would I recommend it to a friend, but I do expect that I'll be returning myself!
The Progress was fantastic - amazing food with so many small plates or large plates (3) to choose from. We enjoyed learning about the menu from the server and then checking off what we wanted. We got there a little early, which meant we could try a couple of the cocktails at the bar.
The food/atmosphere/wait staff were all wonderful....we will be back.
Amazing, top to bottom. Don’t skimp on the veggie centered dishes. The duck is something not of this world, in a good way. Well done y’all.
