What Insiders Are Saying
The Progress, on Fillmore, is a great time and a good scene, with excellent food.
Food was quite bland. The crab didn't have any flavor and the pork shoulder was dry. The portions were small, and it took longer than it should have to serve the courses. By the time the last two plates were served, we were ready to leave. For all the hype and what it costs, it was a disappointing dining experience.
Just great food from the epitome of a truly creative couple of cooks/chefs
Staff cares about the food and the message and taking care of the guests
What a beautiful treat
Thank you Stuart, Nicole and your back up team
We celebrated my husband's birthday and were not disappointed! We've been to The Progress several times now, and each time find the menu so interesting and creative, and always delicious no matter what we choose. The cocktails are stellar, the staff is always warm and welcoming and the service just right.
Thank you for a wonderful evening! We'll be back soon.
All of dishes are so inspiring, and appropriately portioned. For glasses of wine and 1/2 bottle of wine, they bring bottles to table and pour from bottles. This way of service is what I always long for. Thank you very much!
Lovely setting. Would not recommend if you are gluten free or not into crudo. I am 6 months pregnant and has to go for a second dinner after Progress. Not something I’ve ever had to do before.
We had an early 5:30 reservation and it took twice as long to get there. Despite being over 30 minutes late, the staff could not have been more gracious. Upon our arrival, we were greeted warmly and they set our expectations in an extremely professional manner that there was another reservation within two hours.
The food was delicious and nicely balanced. Dishes are served family style and came quickly without being rushed. We enjoyed the Brussels sprouts so much that we placed a second order for that.
I am looking forward to returning to The Progress!
This is one of my new favorite restaurants in the city. Great attentive service and amazing food served family style. Have the duck and lamb chops. Amazing!
Excellent food, service & ambiance/design! Wish the prices weren’t so high, but the flavors were absolutely fabulous! Good thing this was a work dinner, as I couldn’t afford this to be a regular place. Stand outs: ceviche, rack of lamb, caviar, Brussel sprouts, beet salad all delectable!
Love everything about your space, service, feast and drink program! Thanks so much ❤️
Food was good and service was friendly tho not overly informative. The restaurant was very cold. it happened to be a quite cold evening outside so unsure if the building does not have heat or is generally kept cold.
The food blew away anything we’ve had in the past year in SF. Very imaginative and well balance (salt, fat, acid, sweet, umami). I’ve been to a number of Michelin starred restaurants that weren’t this good.
The good mood with great food & drinks. Love the interior! Since it was 2 of us, we tried many smaller plate dishes. I want to go back with more people so we can do the large plates!
The squid noodles were OUTSTANDING!
Generally thoughtful, creative and tasty offerings, albeit several were a bit "busy", combining too many disparate ingredients to the point of dampening the tastes a bit too much. Fine service, bordering on too attentive (eg., interrupting too frequently with water refills). All that said, the ambiance, food and drink were overall high quality, but our return will likely be just to the bar with starters. In almost all fancy restaurants, starters and drinks are the stars, not to mention the more economic approach to the experience!
It's hard for me to review the Progress- it was a celebration dinner and the night was loads of fun, but I have to say, overall the food and the service did not meet my expectations. Service was abrupt- we made reservations for 8 on a Monday night and because we were a party of 5 and it was a birthday, so when we were being hustled out the door at 10:30, it felt pretty awkward.
As for the food- maybe I'm just done with the whole California small plate thing, and these plates were SMALL. For a party of 5 we ordered one large buffet dish, about 7-8 small plates, and dessert, and I woke up the next day needing an omelette for breakfast. Presentation was nice, but the food did not have enough of a consistent theme for me to feel like it was building upon anything- instead it felt a bit like a round robin of tastes- some of them great (bagna cauda), and some just OK (citrus salad). The Asian fusion duck was quite good, but didn't really work with some of the other dishes. Maybe we could have ordered better, but maybe I'm just over this type of service and want a meal as opposed to an experience. Dinner with drinks ran about $120pp.
Amazing service, the food was some of the best I’ve had in SF. Definitely will be coming back!
A delicious way to celebrate my birthday!
The staff was knowledgeable and excellent in every way, food is inventive and often thrilling. Great wine list & cocktails. Love the bathrooms walls!
Food was generally great with the exception of the abalone which was overcooked and miniscule.
Server was harried and she had some attitude. Back waiter stepped up to help with wine service without much knowledge.
An overall excellent culinary experience was marred by unprofessional staff.
Firstly, the service was outstanding. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. The interior was also beautiful. The food, taste and flavors were knock out. Some plates were a small though. The duck sharing plate was delicious!
The food and wine were amazing, as was our wait staff
Food was excellent. Cocktails were also very nice. Service was very friendly and courteous, but it took a bit longer than it should have for our last course to arrive. Noise level was somewhat loud but not too bad.
Overall good experience, with emphasis on how good the food and drinks were.
Dinner for two, with drinks but no dessert, cost us $155 all in (including tax and tip).
Loved this place. Great food, great service. All food was Great but the squid ink pasta was an absolute standout.
Some of the best food I’ve ever had.
No valet on a day where we had the women’s march not a great experience
Diners crammed in like a rush hour BART train
Poor wine selection
We had a really nice meal for my husband’s birthday at the progress. The ambiance was comfortable. The food was really tasty and innovative. Great flavors, wine list, and cocktails! Will be back!
The service was VERY slow. We had 45 minute gaps where we would have no service. We were dining with a 2-year old and this was very difficult for us. Way too slow.
Truly fabulous meal. A couple dishes were a little high in sodium but they were happy to swap them out. We got some recommendations from a neighboring table that I’ll pass on here. Lamb tartar and Dungeness crab were impeccable. Enjoy
World class. Thanks to chef and the rest of the crew!
My wife and I went here as a first night out after being enclosed with our newborn for 6 weeks. We had an amazing meal. The rib eye was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The mashed potatoes were a must with them and together they made us melt into our chairs with satisfaction. We also ordered the roti with truffles, the Brussels sprouts, and the pork shoulder. Our waiter, Sophie, was also great. She encouraged our celebration. We topped it off with the chocolate cake and the 20 year tawny port. Back to the grind!
The only downside was the noise level. My guest and I could barely hear one another. The decibel level was 84. Any way to get things quieter?
The food and service were super!
Delicious food, great service, warm setting. We'll be back!
Everything about this place was magical.
Wonderful meal at The Progress! The duck platter was so delicious, the brussels sprout dish was the best brussels sprout dish I've ever had and the hot toddy panna cotta was amazing! Will be back again - every time the menu is a little different and every meal so far has been A+
Absolutely fantastic! Food, service, everything was wonderful. One of top dining experiences I have had in San Francisco!
I booked this restaurant for my boss and after he's been there he emailed me directly that he was so happy with my choice! Food and atmosphere all good!
Came here for my birthday and was such a great choice! We shared a bunch of amazing bites, great wine, great cocktails and the ambiance is the best in the city!
Heard really good things about this place before, but unfortunately the food was highly disappointing. Out of the 7-8 different meals we tried only one hit the standards of what you’d expect from a Michelin starred restaurant.
This was truly original food, beautifully presented. Although it was the popular plate sharing, the waiter helped us organize a wonderful meal.
Great ambience and excellent food. Service could be improved but cocktail list more than made up for this. Great meal
