About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Great for scenic views
A rural public house serving local beers, Berkshire gin and ciders, as well as a great wine selection. Bar snacks and full meals available 7 days a week. Cooking over a central grill makes for great theatrical cooking from our open-plan kitchen, overseen by Head Chef Nick Galer.

Whilst a subtle Basque feel will permeate throughout, its roots are firmly founded on those of a classic English pub – so while featuring top end Basque dishes fit for a destination dinner, it also offers simple pub snacks for a light lunch… while the food may be inspired by the Basque country, the ingredients are local… and while the wines may be sourced from Iberia, the beer is very much English.

The crowning glory is the sensational open kitchen, with a huge, CHARCOAL FIRED parilla grill and a BRICK OVEN as its centrepiece and all in front of the guests – very visual and very theatrical.

The Pot Kiln has been a really exciting project, and we’re thrilled to be finally open.

The decor is undeniably beautiful, setting high expectations from the moment you walk in. Unfortunately, the food and service didn’t live up to the ambiance. The portion sizes were surprisingly small—particularly the cauliflower “steak,” which turned out to be just three tiny pieces of cauliflower. While I understand that lamb can be fatty, the cut we were served was overwhelmingly so, with barely any actual meat. To top it off, my dessert tasted stale. Service also left much to be desired. We were asked three separate times if we wanted to order drinks—after we had already done so. The staff then spent much of our meal chatting behind the bar about non-work-related topics, which was distracting and took away from the dining experience. Overall, while the space is lovely, the food and service need significant improvement to match the setting.

We stayed overnight for a special occasion. Overall the experience is really not to be missed. Sitting next to the open kitchen watching the chefs prepare dinner is a novelty that adds to your dining experience. The food, particularly the Hereford aged Sirloin for two is excellent. I dropped a star for service purely because the staff, though welcoming, friendly, and helpful occasionally disappear, which is both great as you feel as if you are at home but if you want something can be a little frustrating. We stayed overnight in a superior room which was very nice indeed, especially the shower! We will be returning in the future.

Always a guaranteed a lovely meal, especially for special occasions. Staff are attentive and knowledgable. Great the dogs could rest while we ate after a lovely walk beforehand.

Lunchtime dining only review. Stunning location, been coming here for 30 years and it rarely disappoints. Recent incarnation however…. Service: questionable - I asked for a bowl of water for the dog and got told to go and find one outside and that there is a tap outside - zero effort made. Then got told that where we originally sat outside is an area where food isn’t served. Don’t sit on the beautiful grassy tables at the back FYI, no food service available apparently. Seems serving customers isn’t primary concern. Went to the bar to order a few times and still pay a service charge. Food: delicious but portions are tiny so left hungry and crazy expensive for what you get. Part of the problem is that the large dishes come with no sides so everything has to be ordered in addition. The fish stew was the only dish that didn’t really need any accompaniment - comes with focaccia. Overall: massively overpriced, left feeling hungry and ripped off. Won’t be going there again anytime soon. Ironically I’ll be more likely to visit the Royal Oak next time I’m looking for a lunch spot in the area (same owners). Sadly massively disappointing. Such a shame.

My first time at the Pot Kiln since it changed hands, and the old favourite changed its focus. The new menu looked interesting - and boy did it deliver! Outstanding food. I chose from the lunch set menu, starting with the Serrano ham - wafer thin ham, elegantly piled and simply drizzled with a little oil. Then baked cod with clams - served on a small square of Spanish potatoes. I added a side of chips. All delicious. A nice Rioja to go with that. Service was great too. Not rushed but well taken care of. The old favourite is a new favourite...
