The Porch Restaurant & Bar - Sacramento
Food was good. Service was curt.
The chicken and waffles was so good! The chicken melted in your mouth! And the Bloody Mary was the best! Excellent customer service.
We usually enjoy the porch. We always have a splendid time at the bar and the best service at the bar. Don’t expect much in terms of service in the dinning room area. If you go for dinner just sit at the bar you will not be disappointed. They have amazing cocktail selections and the food brings me back when I used to live in the south. Will continue to dine here but just at the bar.
2 people on a Valentine’s date night:
-good food & large portions but for why you pay, just okay
-loud enough that we had to raise our voices to communicate
-table arrangement gives an ambience that you’re basically dining w your neighbors
-lackluster scenery indoors
-friendly but very slow & sloppy service in our case
Unrelated to a review, but my significant other caught some sort of sickness a few hours after we’d left & said she couldn’t even stand the smell of their food while she was puking.
We will not be going back anytime soon.
Service for Valentines Day was horrible. We received our order and immediately noticed my husbands order was wrong. We flagged down the waitress and told her the order was wrong she stated I'll be back as soon as I drop off these waters. Instead of coming back she took someones order. After 10 minutes she finally came back and picked up my husbands food and said she would be back. Didnt offer an appetizer while he waited or even offer to take my food back so we could eat together. He just had to sit there and wait.
Server did not check on us while we were waiting for the order that they messed up. I had my food but it took 15 minutes for my husband to get his food after she realized he asked for well done and she brought him medium rare. After not being able to locate her for the full 15 minutes it took to remake the food she finally comes back and we ask her if she could just box it up and bring the check since we were going to be late for our movie. She then brings the check and we see she has charged my husband for 2 meals. By this time we are extremely irritated. My husband asked her if she could please take off the meal and she tells him she can only take off $15...what? We didnt have time to talk to a manager or even argue with her. Needless to say that was a first and last time for us.
We brought a friend along with us to introduce her to the restaurant...she loved it!!!
My boyfriend and I were a bit disappointed with our meal at the porch this past Valentines Day. We were very much looking forward to our evening, as we had gone to The Porch during Sacramento's Dine Downtown Restaurant Week and it had AMAZING food. This time however, it didn't come close. My burger was pretty flavorless, and my boyfriend wasn't thrilled with his shrimp and grits. I will say that the sweet potato fries were flawless though!
Good food, the service was a little slow but the server was very friendly. For the four of us, we had two entrées and one salad. Portions are extremely large and the food is heavy. Sharing is a must! Very loud at dinner time.
The food is always warm and welcoming. I have always hated meatloaf, but the brisket meatloaf has changed my mind completely. It is amazing!
Pleasant, good server, my shrimp po boy was excellent. My friend had delicious shrimp and grits. Food took a noticeably long time to arrive and the fries were cold and seemed like the dregs of the bottom of the bag. But it was overall a positive and we will return.
I had my Birthday dinner there and it was delicious!
Wonderful quiet lunch spot with very good food. Nice atmosphere.
The acoustics are slightly loud if you are meeting for business. The food is always good and the portions very generous.
Great food, great service! Will most def be back! I had the buttermilk chicken with grits and bourbon bacon and collards greens! It was fantastic!!!
This was our first visit to the Porch and we loved it. We were especially impressed with the calibre and quantity of food served for the price. One suggestion I might make to the "chicken fried steak" menu item is to allow patrons to order 1 side dish with it as the quantity of potatoes that comes with it is HUGE. I found myself wanting more diversity of food on the plate. But, that said, it was delicious and the portions were more than generous. Very satisfied with our meal and we will definitely return.
Great service, great food!
Granted it was the last day of the Dine Downtown Sacramento - but this restaurant failed to cook enough or have enough food supplies on hand for the last day of dining. Both of the main courses were not edible. The flank steak was overdone and looked like scraps put together (even though we had asked for medium rare) and the Jambalaya was all rice with no sausage, no shrimp, no chicken, etc. The restaurant apologized and said they had run out of items since it was the last day - well, then, do something different from your main menu - or tell the patrons before they dine. Inexcusable.
The gentleman who served us was the manager I think, and was extremely helpful, attentive & gracious. The food was unbelievable!
The food was great when we finally got it. Our reservation was at 11;30. We ordered shortly after. About 40 minutes later we called our waitress over to ask about our food and let her know we have an appt. Shr then told us that there were big parties and food was taking about 30 minutes. We told her it’s been over 30 minutes and said again we have an appt at 12:45. She said she’d check. She came back and said there were 5 tickets in front of us. When we asked how long that would be she said she didn’t know because it depends on what was on the orders but she would ask. She came back and said another 5 minutes.
In all, it took 45 minutes to get our food. Our waitress was not apologetic until we got the check. We not only had to initially ask about our food after waiting so long but also had to prod her along to find out about how long it would take. Disappointing service but the avocado scramble was amazing.
Wonderful service and generous portions of delicious and unique Southern specialties. Was looking forward to coconut cream pie for dessert but they ran out.
We were excited to try The Porch during Dine Downtown week. We had a reservation, and there were open tables when we arrived, however we waited at least 10 minutes, largely ignored, while the hostess and another staffer consulted their screen, talked to each other and tried to figure out how to accommodate a large party that was waiting. We were then sat right by the front door at a large round table, not really suitable for a couple. The Cauliflower appetizer was tasty, the salad choice on the Dine Downtown menu appeared to have been made pre-made by several hours. The chicken was very dry and did not taste "blackened." The tomatoes were inedible; odd to feature tomatoes in January when they are not in season and therefore not stellar as Sacramento tomatoes are. My husband ordered the vegan "chicken" and waffle. It was as another reviewer described: awful. Dry and relatively tasteless. The "bacon" resembled and tasted like pieces of cardboard. The flat iron steak was a highlight...well prepared with nice sweet potato fries and greens. The zucchini cake was good, the pound cake was dry. Both were very small portions and also appeared to have been prepped well in advance; kind of like a dessert you get at a conference. We saw our waiter twice.... the service staff were so inattentive that by the time we had a chance to order wine we only had time for a glass, not the bottle we intended to order. The cocktails were another highlight and the bartender was attentive to customers, something that could not be said for the hostess or wait staff. We were really disappointed and surprised that The Porch did not take the opportunity of Dine Downtown to shine for new customers. We won't be back and, with so many other places to dine in Sacramento, won't recommend.
Loved every part of our meal, will be back!
We had a wonderful experience here. the service was wonderful and the food was really enjoyable. good comfort food. Pork chopwas great. Nice and moist. Chard was really good. Skirt steak was really tender. Zucchini cake was fun with a hard sauce on top. Will be heading back again.
Service was not great
We did the dine downtown and the food was just not worth the money that we paid. As well as the wine was not great.
Our Dine Downtown dinner was excellent. Jambalaya was enjoyed by friends. Flat Iron steak was cooked to perfection. Highly recommend the Zucchini cake with pineapple Sauce. Server was customer focused, had a great sense of humor, and did an excellent job. The Whiskey Sours were enjoyed by all.
The one issue I have was my daughter and I ordered the jumbolya. My plate had 4 shrimps in it and hers had none. We mentioned this to the waitress and they said they would have the cook saute her some. They came back with 4 shrimps (claiming they were the large one - in actuality they were the same size as the ones I had). My question would be why would you have to saute 4 shrimps when there should be some already in the pot of jumbolya (unless we received the last of the batch). Also, they could have at least given her a couple more shrimps for her time (food doesn't stay hot when you're waiting on something).
We had the fixed menu for Dine Downtown. The starter was good: cauliflower in a sweet and sour sauce. The desert was also good, especially the ice cream. But the main, a vegetarian take on chicken and waffles, was simply bad. It was dry and chewy, with a tiny dish of apple sauce as the only thing to wet the palate. The “bacon” was inedible. Overall disappointing. One of the worst mains I e had in a long time.
Unfortunately, we had a very mediocre experience at The Porch. We had a reservation, but waited about 25 minutes for a table. My wife was torn between a vegan meal or jambalaya, and the server - who had never tasted the vegan meal - said the vegan meal "looked" pretty good coming out of the kitchen. The food was barely edible. Weird tofu, strange fake bacon. Really bad, actually. For my meal, the fried chicken was very good, and so were the mashed potatoes. But the collard greens were SWEET! I lived 21 years in the south and never had sweet collard greens. They should be labeled as sweet on the menu. We told the server about the problems and she just shrugged it off. "Oh well..." They also got the check wrong, and tried to overcharge by about $15. We're big-time restaurant goers, but I cannot recommend The Porch.
Came to try the Fried Chicken, portion was nice sized and the price point is very good at The Porch. We were unaware it was dine downtown so, one of us took advantage of the offer. The buffalo cauliflower was yummy. Overall dinner was good, the only exception was the short ribs, too sweet and tough but the portion was huge. The bartender was very helpful and friendly, the waitstaff was prompt and courteous. My only complaint was the host staff, it sets the tone of your dining experience when you are ignored for several minutes and the host is standing right in front of you. Overall, I would recommend visiting The Porch, clean, quick service, good food, great cocktails.
Love that they have a few vegan items! Would love to see more. Everything was tasty and service was fantastic. They even customized the greeting on our menus for my friend’s birthday!
Wife and I cane her for a date night before heading to the B Street Theatre! Food was great and the drinks were tasty. We sat in the bar area and the bartender was awesome! Definitely coming back!!!
Seated quickly due to reservations. Food was very good upscale slightly hipster Southern. Tables are very close together and it got very busy and loud after 10:30 am. Service was pretty good although after taking payment the waiter forgot to return with our boxed leftovers.
Food was overpriced for the quality, in my opinion. Menus and decor were shabby, chair cushions are filthy and paint is horribly worn on them. Charred coleslaw was limp and tasteless, like it had been in the walk-in for a week. Presentation on the banana pudding was awkward with limp garnish and soggy wafers. Again, like it had been make days ago. Vegan bbq tofu was flat as tasteless. Shrimp and grits has uncleaned shrimp.
Also, the practice of using a swipe checkout tool table side while your server stares at you as you calculate their tip awkwardly is a terrible idea.
I am from Napa and maybe are used to better experiences, but you can’t charge people bistro prices and deliver diner food and ambience.
We have made a number of visits to the Porch and each time we are very pleased. Food is excellent, service is great and both combine for a very nice experience. PS the Burbon is superb.
Fantastic food, service and ambiance!
We let the restaurant know we were celebrating a birthday ahead of time. When we arrived, the menus had a heading on them that said happy birthday. We thought that was a nice touch. After looking at the menus, we noticed that the prices were one to two dollars more per item compared to their website. We didn't want to embarrass the birthday party so didn't say anything.
The restaurant is know for southern food. Having been to the south many times, we know Southern food. The fried chicken was bland and dried out. The shrimp in the po-boy was over powered by the bacon and avocado. Yes, this is not a real po-boy, but a take on it.
The food & service was excellent as usual. It is one of my favorite places.
