The Pit - Durham Ratings and Reviews
We had a reservation and still had to wait 20 minutes for our table. Also, we had a table of 8 and could not get service. The server had other tables close to us but would never come over. The other tables were much smaller and all male guests so she was not interested in a mixed gender business meeting. The food was great but the service was terrible.
So I know the food scene in The Durham area is great and growing. However, a visit to The Pit each time I visit my son at Duke is a must. And does not disappoint! The sampler blew us away with the Soul Rolls, cheese balls & bruschetta was wonderful. I got a healthy apinach salad with delicious grilled checkien. My son ordered & devoured the brisket- fall off the bone tender.
I am already looking forward to my next visit to The Pit .... and to see my son at college!!!!
Popular barbecue spot hosting many groups, with many great sounding choices on the menu. Unfortunately we had mixed results with the food. My daughters had burgers which were great, but we found the consistency of the pulled pork to be a bit to mushy for our tastes.
Service was friendly, but a little disjoint on the night we were there, but i think that was just due to how busy they were.
We took some friends from out of town to experience southern food. The food was good and they enjoyed it but the service was terrible. Our waiter was overwhelmed with a large table and kept forgetting about us. We didn't get our biscuits until our dinner came out, and when our family style dinner arrived we had no plates to put it on. He also up-sold us on more food than we needed. We waited a long time for our check and my husband finally just went to find our waiter. The noise level was intense and we couldn't carry on a conversation.
Had a group of 9. They couldn't keep us all together for some reason. To be fair, made original reservation for 6. Made a second, separate reservation to accommodate, with the understanding that there was a possibility that we wouldn't all be together. All good except when we looked around after seated, there were plenty of tables available that could've fit us all together. Hence weak effort in trying to keep our party together and we almost left!
We always stop here as we travel through Durham. Tonight we didn't have a fantastic meal but I would still recommend as a valid restaurant. They had many large groups and a wedding upstairs tonight which definitely affected service and the food. The mac and cheese which is usually outstanding was grainy and we left the entire side. Fried chicken wasn't very crispy as if It had been sitting for too long. They were out of most desserts as of 8pm so we left without having dessert. Hope to return in the future to our original experience.
BBQ had a wonderful taste - chopped serving was large; all three who ordered it had take home. The chicken salad wrap was excellent and also a large portion - could easily be shared. Pre-meal biscuits were melt in your mouth scrumptious and the hush puppies were very tasty. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends.
The pumpkin cornbread with maple butter will be a dish that I remember for a very long time. Simply fabulous! Everything there was good, but this was extra special. Our waiter could not have been nicer. The place has an excellent vibe, and it seems everyone is happy to be there.
Keep up the good work!!
Pulled pork was outstanding. Took out of town guests who were thrilled to get ENC BBQ and local brews. Baked beans are smokey, unlike any I've had before. Yummy. We were there mid week at 7 pm and it was fairly empty and quiet (great for a business dinner). I had to give people outside directions to The Pitt since there is no outside signage (our little secret?).
The food was wonderful. We had the sampler appetizer and it was fabulous. Service was fine, very friendly and helpful. There were a very annoying repeating squeak that occasionally overcame the conversation.....At first we thought it was an alarm for the kitchen machinery, but it continued. We spoke to the staff and they all heard it and just “don’t hear it anymore.” We decided it might be coming from one of the overhead whirling fans and suggested it be turned off for a minute to see, but that never happened. Unfortunately, with hearing aids as well, it was hard to ignore.
