The Pit - Durham
Great place. Great food. Great drinks. Great atmosphere.
We have been to the Pit numerous times before and it was wonderful. This time the service was awful, the food was only ok. Some meals were served cold (and they were the last meals served) and they took a long time serving them so that the ones delivered first were cold by the time the final meals were served and they forgot parts of what people ordered. We were a party of 9 but only ordered a total of 6 meals plus some extra sides.
The Pit in Durham was the first restaurant in Durham we went to before freshman year and so we made it one of last...and it did not disappoint. For the 5 of us, me and 4 stidents, we ordered the Sampler and the Soul Rolls were a hit once again. The brisket, meatloaf, fried chicken were delicious and not able to compare to others I’ve had. The fried okra, collard greens and Mac & Cheese, especially the Mac & Cheese, had everyone sharing each other’s food. I think that is a really good indication. I had the spinach salad with grilled chicken....yum, yum, yum!
Don’t even think twice...just go! You will not be sorry.
The service was absolutely horrific. The food came out 90 seconds after we ordered it, which meant it had been sitting under heat lamps for the last hour plus. The pulled pork was the drive to Nate I’ve ever eaten. The waiter never came and asked if I wanted another drink which was water only. This was a terrible experience in Durham, and I will not be coming back
These folks do it right! I love how they take familiar ingredients and flavors to create new and interesting dishes. The chopped barbecue reminds me of the old days without being overly nostalgic and beholden to the past.
I was very disappointed as I heard they had the best chicken around. The chicken was extremely dry and overcooked, the mac and cheese was so dry it was in pieces, and the tea was so sweet we couldn't drink it.
I've been to The Pit several times, so when it was time to decide where to get dinner for a large businesses group, the choice was easy. Everyone loved their food and service was quick. We will definitely be back again.
Nice atmosphere, relaxed, enjoyable, but the food was disappointing. Ribs were dry and not flavorful. The collards were way too salty, with no other discernible flavor. Really liked the soul rolls appetizer. Our server was friendly, helpful, responsive and attentive; however, food and drinks took a long time to reach our table -- not his fault. The Pit is convenient and nearby, but we won't be coming back, and that is really a shame for us, because we'd like to like you.
Our server was very nice but this was bad bbq. Couldn’t get a knife through the beef brisket - like rubber. Ribs were fair at best. Pulled Pork was good but not special. Won’t be back.
Food was good and our server Jerrod was fantastic
Great atmosphere and great food at reasonable prices!
The brisket was tough. We had come specifically for that. The server took a long time to get to our table.
Food is always delicious and in a cool location.
We made a reservation and were seated immediately. Our waiter came over after about 10 minutes and saw we had been waiting for quite awhile. He asked for our orders then and came back with the biscuits and hush puppies. We didn't see him again until he came to apologize for our food taking so long and it would be out soon. The food was right behind him. It came out about 40 minutes after we placed it and was already cold. He never came to ask us how it was so we just finished eating and got the check and left. The price of the meal was incredibly reasonable, I just wish we had better service and got to enjoy hot food.
Service was good but the food quality was not very good. Both the meat and sides were over cooked and very dry.
Service wasn’t great but it was busy. food was delish!
This experience wasn't the best one that we have had at the Pit. It was disappointing to get luke warm food, even though we were later brought hot side dishes. I was told that the ribs were dry, and as for others, the brisket wasn't the best either. Two people had the catfish and they were highly disappointed at what is considered a serving for the fish. Hopefully when and if we return, the experience will be better.
Brisket was OUT OF THIS WORLD! Service was slow, but it was a busy Friday night.
Food is always pretty good but past few visits the service has been slow. Just make sure you have the time and not rushed and you should be fine. Ribs are great....
Never had southern BBQ before but everything here was amazing. The food was fantastic. Free biscuits and hush puppies. Great pork BBQ. Our server was on top of things despite being very busy.
Food was not hot, service was slow to non existent. Maybe we caught them on a bad night.
Food was just okay. Everything else was great.
Terry made my fiance's 45th birthday an amazing experience. The Pit of Durham is fa-bu-lous!
The food came out very quickly. The restaurant filled up quickly after our arrival. I have had much better BBQ and it was ok. The sides were very disappointing. I won’t be returning anytime soon after hearing a lot or great reviews.
Food was great. Too noisy as a very large group was seated next to us
My husband and I came in on a whim while visiting Durham from Ohio and absolutely did not regret it! The service was amazing and the food even better! He got the ribs and I got the brisket... everything was cooked perfectly and the sauce (atleast for my brisket) was sooooo good! When we come back to Durham we will definitely be stopping here again!
When we arrived we were seated immediately. The table was dirty and I asked the waiter to clean the table. When the food came out there was hair in my tarter sauce on my plate. There was no compensation for the wait or nothing.
The food was amazing, the birthday luncheon was amazing, location great. The hair incident we let go so we could have a good time.
Urban setting, hard for us to find parking but they had valet parking when we went. Staff was friendly and prompt. Mini hush puppies were great. First time having North Carolina bbq. Enjoyed the experience. We would go back if ever back in Durham.
Excellent food and great service. Very accommodating for our seating arrangements.
It was good basic bbq with a nice variety of sides including fried okra, collard greens, sweet potato fries, and more. The hush puppies were delicious. But our waitress was HORRIBLE. Our glass was empty 90% of the meal. She never came back and was very rude. The food runners and other wait staff were very nice and helpful.
Not the same experience than last time. Food came late, cold, not tasty at all. Beer came after the main course, and it was very difficult to have a servant. We were sit in front of a window, freezing!!!
Wasn't amazing. Brought a birthday cake for my husband and the server brought it out, in the box, with the candles still in the package and said he "couldn't find a lighter to light the candles"...
Place is definitely a more upscale for a bbq joint. The bbq itself was okay. Pulled pork was nice and smokey but the brisket was definitely overdone and not a trace of smoke or bark. Sides and service were very good.
The atmosphere is pleasant at the Pit. Being able to make reservations, helps plan your night out if you are limited on time. The barbeque pork is the best option at this restaurant. It's not the best barbeque in Durham, but it definitely is good. They also have good options for kids.
The food was great and the service was outstanding!
Our waiter was outstanding, we were pleased with the food and verything was hot and delicious!! The staff is exceptional and it is a really warm and inviting atmosphere . We hope to be back soon!! Def worth the drive we made to dine , 3 .5 hour drive!!😊
The food was terrible. Service was very good, but that doesn’t make up for food. Better step up their game to keep up with Durham foodies
This would easily be a 4 or 5 star rating if I had only selected the Eastern NC pulled BBQ plate - it is simply some of the best BBQ this NC-native has had: truly spectacular! However, I opted for the combo plate and the brisket was horribly overcooked with no visible remnant of a smoke ring. It was very tough and chewy and I informed my server of this shortcoming. The sides were also wonderful: I had collards and fried okra, both of which were very nicely done. The black eye was clearly the cuts of brisket I was served.
To be clear, I would return to The Pit again and keep my focus on their pork BBQ and to explore other sides. The location and environment were nicely done and the valet service was extremely helpful.
Nice restaurant, friendly atmosphere and good food
Poor experience from start to finish. So bad, it became comical. They lost our reservation, served us the wrong meals, and our waiter disappeared mid meal. After we accidentally spilled a glass of ice water, we flagged down a busboy who handed us extra napkins then turned to wipe down the empty tables around us! Food was so-so.
