This restaurant is permanently closed. The Pines is located in Brooklyn’s burgeoning Gowanus neighborhood. Serving New American cuisine, Chef John Poiarkoff creates dishes that are thoughtfully crafted satisfying at the same time. A rotating list of imaginative cocktails, craft beers on draft, and Euro-centric wines complete the experience. Enjoy the eclectic space, creative and earnest food, and casual neighborhood vibe, complete with fire pit in the garden. Please be advised that covers of 6 or more require a prix-fixe menu. The Pines was our favorite neighborhood restaurant from inception through... this last meal. We were frequent diners, from before they had reservations until recently. Our meal prior to this one was amazing, really stellar, interesting cuisine, in combinations that seems wild but worked. This time, the descriptions on the menu sounded interesting, but nothing worked out well. A pork shoulder dish was cooked well, but the elements of the dish weren't put together in a way that married them. It lacked any unique flavor. The venison dish was outright boring, the promised "burnt onion cream" it was either tasteless, substituted or left out.

For what we enjoyed about it, The Pines lost its mark.

The Pines is one of my favorite gems in the neighborhood. I've been to dinner several times now over the course of multiple seasons. Every time they deliver a creative and delicious culinary experience. Their menu changes frequently based on seasonal ingredients and each time they seem to design recipes that are creative enough to be novel and elegantly simple enough to allow the quality of the food to hold its own. Great service. Unpretentious atmosphere. Incredible value for the quality of the experience.

Had a great Valentines Day dinner here. A little pricey, but that goes with the territory for V-Day prix fixe menus. Very accommodating and great service - did a vegetarian menu for my wife on less than 24-hours notice. Highly recommend.

We enjoyed our recent meal to The Pines. The broccoli rab dish was delish and the pork shoulder was melt-in-your-mouth amazing!!!! The pasta dish was underwhelming however. Cocktail and mocktail were very tasty and the chocolate cake with beet and ice cream dessert was kind of different and very good. The staff was very friendly and accommodating to my 8 mos pregnant self (needed the heat to be turned down and requested a different table). Our waiter was top notch - very attentive and helpful.

We were so well taken care of for our anniversary and the food was spectacular. The steak was one of the best cooked steaks I've ever had. The atmosphere is so simple yet beautiful. I will definitely return

One of our party ordered the marrow bone with mussels. The marrow bone was totally RAW! Outrageous that there were 3 guys in the kitchen and they send out a raw marrow bone. My pasta was a REALLY small portion for $24. The pasta itself was fresh, delicious and perfectly cooked. However it boasted "truffle" in the dish. There was no truffle or even truffle oil. Another person in our party ordered pork (not sure if it was a filet or a chop). That too was a small portion for the price, but was apparently perfectly cooked and delicious. The 4th member of our party ordered a pasta dish (different from mine) and she said the pasta was very good and perfectly cooked. We had been meaning to dine at the Pines for a long time. But this first (and probably the last) experience was sorely disappointing, which is sad. We wanted it to be a favorite that we would visit often.

The hostess was overly concerned with seating/timing, making me and my guest unnecessarily anxious. If you want someone to move to a smaller table, there are pleasant ways to go about doing it, such as "would you mind moving" as opposed to "you're going to need to move." Despite being told the restaurant would be packed in an hour, it was not. Beyond the rude hostess, the waiters were pleasant, the food was enjoyable, and the setting was casual and comfortable.

The experience started off awkwardly as we were ushered to some folding chairs set up near the kitchen to wait for our table (which was not ready for our 8:30 reservation). Server was attentive but made it seem like we had to order in a hurry (although the restaurant had cleared out by the time our meal was finished). Amuse bouche was identified as "pickled vegetables" on a tapioca crisp. Server admitted that he didn't know what the vegetable was. First few courses were very tasty--both the shishito peppers and the cabbage and boar belly dish. Next few dishes were a miss. Bone marrow and boquerones was served without any bread and totally inedible to me. It seemed like an interesting combination but the pungent anchovy taste did not pair well with the bone marrow--especially when there was nothing to spread it on! I ate only one bite. The chicken livers were served with the same unidentified, super acidic pickled vegetables, which didn't work for me. Pasta with mushrooms entree was nothing special and pulled pork entree tasted like a sloppy joe--just a basic tomato sauce flavor and mushy! The dessert was delicious (but there were only two options, and one was not available). Also, we poured our own wine the whole night. Server did not top off our glasses a single time. The decor and menu are interesting, but overall, I was not impressed. Also, as one other reviewer mentioned, if you are seated on the bench, you will shake around all night with the other diners' movements--kind of awkward and uncomfortable.

Food was delicious. Highly recommend the cabbage. It was so good I wanted to lick the plate. Duck breast was cooked beautifully--juicy, thick skin. Also enjoyed the shishito peppers, blade steak, and brussels.

The service was great and it's a lovely room. I had last been to The Pines just before their glowing review in the Times. That was an amazing experience. Sadly, it seems the kitchen was running a little rough the night that I visited last week. We were kindly warned that the plate our bone marrow was served upon was scalding hot, but somehow the bone marrow was cold. We didn't mention it because it was edible and I find it mortifying to send food back. But then a pasta dish came out so obscenely salted that I had to say something, alas. The staff is amazing and were very nice about it and the amended dish was delicious. I was just surprised because the food had been impeccable when I was last there a few years ago.

It was a nice place to eat, but not somewhere I would go to often. The prices were outrageous considering what was plated. I just thought the value wasn't there for me. Otherwise, it was a pleasant experience.

I was expecting yet another hipster, Berkshire pork proffering, food joint that catered to kids with ore money than taste and charged too much for cocktails. Happily I was wrong. Very wrong. The food was modern, but far more inventive than anything I've had in the past 6 months. The service was friendly and casual, yet not intrusive. Really a great surprise all around! Definitely going back.

I'm a huge Pines fan and have been there 5+ times previously. We were excited to bring two other couples after raving. Compared to previous visits, we were underwhelmed by the flavors and menu offerings. Flavors have been more forward and menu more interesting in the past.

My husband and I went to the pines a couple times a year ago and it was FANTASTIC. then I took a group of friends back this past weekend and the food was subpar at best. Strange unappetizing plating of the food, TINY portions on our $$$ monkfish. Overall disappointing:(

Based on the glowing reviews of the food, I was surprised to arrive and be seated at what amounts to patio furniture. The communal bench shook with other diners movements, and my husband's chair was bumped with each passing person. Having done some research, I was surprised that the waitress then said the dreaded words, "small plates" and that 5-6 was necessary for 2 people. At the prices of $19-$30 a plate, our dinner bill amounted to $144, with just two drinks, before tip. I was seriously underwhelmed with the value for the money, the seating, service, and general attitude of the restaurant (it seemed "too cool for school" but then couldn't follow it up with amazing service and food). Overall the food was fine. Felt skimpy on the details (minimal creme fresh on the beans, bone marrow served without bread, etc).

Had appetizers first next door at Littleneck. Therefore only order a main dish. Ordered the Duck and was told it would take 15 minutes. We left 50 later without having our dinner. It never came and we got no apologies from the wait staff. Will never go there again.

Last Sunday I thought I would see if we could get dinner reservations for The Pines. We thought it would be good to check open table for reservations before coming in, just in case there was a Sunday night crowd. According to Open table there were no available reservations at the 7 O'clock hour, so the next available was 8:30. We took that. Upon arrival and starting to order, we realized we were the last table in the restaurant ordering and they seemed pretty eager to have us leave. I am pretty sensitive to those things, I wouldn't want anyone to have to stick around just because of my table. The Pines hours say they were open until 10, so we thought we would have a good amount of time for dinner and dessert if we wanted. At 9:30 the bartender was turning out lights at the bar. This isn't a restaurant that we would be able to afford all the time, so we were a little disappointed with the complete rush, considering we were within the hours they were seating. While the food was delightful, it was totally not worth the price for the complete rush we were in to eat it. While the waiter was nice, we did not feel comfortable ordering dessert or continuing to sit after the lights were beginning to go out.

And you won't be disappointed in the quality of the food. One thing to note is that the dishes tend to be a bit small for the price. I would say the restaurant is quite pricey but the quality is good. I prefer to pay for quality in general so we were quite happy. We had the following:

Duck rillettes - Really well balanced, good combination of acid and protein
Cabbage - wonderful and full of flavor
Broccoli - really full taste, a bit short on the oxtail however
Borsa Vuota - nice and creamy (butter?!!), delicate but delicious flavor
Trenette - Still Italian but with what seems like a very subtle asian infusion. The pasta was quite white, which as a surprise.
Pork Jowl - fantastic delivery, plenty of pork jowl, meaty and awesome.

Desserts - we had the chocolate one and the roasted parsnip cake. Our advice, SKIP the desserts. They were a waste of money and not great at all. Surprising but clearly they prefer to invest in the savory part of the menu.

Also, wonderful cocktails! I think if we come back we'll get a couple of cocktails and order a pasta and the pork jowls and skip the rest!

Some dishes, like the charred radicchio and fluke, were delicious. Others, like the broccoli, were meh. Not all dishes lived up to their descriptions. One of the pasta dishes was extremely over-salted.
