The Pig & Tinder Box
While Tamworth is widely known as the capital of Australian country music, it’s not often celebrated for its restaurant scene. However, this venue has changed all that.
Housed within one of the town's most iconic heritage buildings is The Pig and Tinderbox. Owners Chris Cornforth and Fraser Haughton have struck gold with this innovative modern restaurant which is packed out most nights. These two are bringing a taste of Sydney’s small bar scene to the country, with quirky industrial decor and a menu that focuses on sharing. There is also an impressive drinks list with plenty of craft beers and cocktail jugs on offer.
The unusual name harks back to the old-school pubs of the past, but what Cornforth and Haughton have created is something that will be sticking around well into the future.
We have eaten here often over three years and the menu now is not good. Our food this week was mediocre and the calamari noodle dish to be honest was horrible and tasted strange. The two trout salmon dishes were unavailable and we arrived at 12 noon before the lunch rush. Wasn’t impressed and had taken a business colleague there who was also disappointed. Service became very poor once it started filling with not enough table staff. Shame as we always liked it. Bring back the previous pork belly dish. The goats cheese sourdough dish elect etc.
I often to The Pig and Tinder for a meal and I have noticed of late the service is really lacking.
Our booking was for 5.45pm and it was half an hour before our drink order was taken, my friend was at the bar waiting to order as there was a wait there too. I don't know if there weren't enough staff, but the service was really sub-par.
Thank you for our booking on Saturday. The food was lovely! Unfortunately there were a few things on that night that made it not so nice as we have had before.
We were a little disappointed by the amount of mistakes with not only our food but so many with our drinks!
The first disappointment was we arrived early for a few drinks prior to our meal and that took around 20 minutes to receive them and because the 2 beers were sitting there for that time they had gone flat and the waitress had to get a spoon to stir it to make it appear to have a froth. We even questioned them on this but they didn’t care or offer new beers.
We ordered the food and that lady was amazing but from there when we wanted another dish but without coriander that came out completely wrong and wasn’t even the dish we asked for, they tried again but brought out the dish out only for it to have coriander in it so we gave up.
Another difficult order was to get a scotch on ice. We asked for a scotch on ice and it came out as a whisky. They couldn’t understand what we wanted but eventually we got a scotch on ice after a lot of confusion!
The bill came to $470 so it wasn’t a small meal so unfortunately it was a little disappointing because we have had some lovely meals with you in the past and we took family to your restaurant for the first time this night!
Love it here. First time coming for brunch but great. Really attentive staff, food delicious, coffee great and the mimosas very quickly refilled!
Never had a bad experience here. Definitely return customers. Never dissapointed
A great night on the verandah enjoying our meal at our own pace. We just love the brussel sprouts!
Just a fly in visit but not my favourite meal in Tamworth so far, staff are lovely and prompt place is groovy but for me not food options l liked
Had a lovely time sitting on the verandah and enjoying breakfast. Was a little disappointed that my friend had asked for a modification to her meal which was then applied to mine also... but was lovely just the same
Had a great evening, food was amazing, service was great.
A good night at the Pig and Tinder. Excellent share plates, plenty of variety. The salmon was superb. Great wine!
A lovely meal, as always.
I like the share plates as it allows diners to try dishes not usually selected.
I did mention to the wait staff that the link to the menu through Open Table is out of date.
Found staff to be super responsive to requests. Glad to see Passionfruit Mojito back on Spring menu.
Husband enjoyed the Lamb ribs and daughter the Japanese style chicken. I had the truffle and mushroom arrancini which were nice, but would love to see the roasted beetroot arrancini back on the menu.
All in all , a great experience
Great experience overall
Great food and even better cocktails! Always impressed with The Pig.
Pig n tinder was my all time favorite restaurant. I personally am not a fan of the new menu after experiencing it twice . The old arancini balls were amazing as well as the gnocchi, deconstructed cheesecake. We were all relatively happy with the service. A beautiful young girl looked after our table and she was very attentive. Bring back the old menu!! 😊 cocktails were great
We were served by pleasant and professional staff who were happy to help wherever they could. The area at the top with 8 at our table and another 6 women at a table next door proved to be a bit noisy but that was unavoidable. The food was tasty and the meals were a good size and good value. Thank you for making our lunch date pleasant.
Delicious food, and fast. My favourite spot in Tamworth
The team were absolutely amazing, full props to catering for our large group! The food was incredible, so delicious and the share plates the perfect amount. The staff were wonderfully welcoming and friendly, even as they had to get rid of us at closing! Huge thank you and would fully recommend
It used to be great! I used to go here often. But the menu and food isnt right. Too many spices and over powering sauces. They need to focus on fresh and simple. They used to have great roast lamb pizzas and other tastey items like fresh tacos and vietnamese salad. No more. Give it time
We were happy with the venue and service but I was disappointed with my meal
Great marketing specials. Delicious food and great wine. Service a little slow but overall a terrific evening.
A group of four of us had a lovely meal and catch up at the Pig & Tinder Box with the added touch of an unexpected really good bottle of wine.
I am a huge Fan of The Pig and regularly come. It's my favourite place to eat in Tamworth. However, was left a bit underwhelmed and disappointed after my birthday dinner on Monday 15th July. It took a while to be seated. Service was a little bit lacking that night but there was only two staff on so they were constantly trying to please everyone. My cocktail was delicious (something with lychee), but the food was a huge let down. My husband had the wagyu flank - it had no flavour whatsoever and went cold VERY quickly. I had the gnocchi and I wasn't a fan - certainly didn't wow me like I thought it would've. The previous menu was amazing, this one, not so much. I am sure I will be back at some stage, but probably not until the menu changes again. Also, I think it is great to offer a kids menu, but the one thing I liked the most about The Pig was that you didn't really cater for kids. I have two young boys of my own, but when I go out for dinner without them I like to go somewhere where there are NO kids so I can escape.
We really enjoyed our night out at the Pig and Tinder Box. Lovely old building with plenty of ambiance and the food was delicious. We really couldn’t fault the service and would definitely return.
The staff at the P&T are top notch and they clearly love their work. They make the good vibes go around because they are pumping positive energy. We missed the taco's on this menu but the pulled pork croquettes were a winner.
There were several mistakes on our bill, and we realized when we got home that we had still paid twice for something. Other than that was great.
Lovely place to have and/or a drink. Great attentive waiters and fabulous food.
We had a table of 10 people, A bit hard sharing the food, but the service was outstanding from a great blonde girl forgot her name, had great laughs with her, she made the night fun. Oh we had varing ages from children to old farts that have never been there before. Thanks Kathleen
Nice indoor setting though it gets a bit noisy, to be expected on a Saturday night though. The food was superb and the staff were all very friendly and extremely courteous. I’ll definitely be visiting again when I’m in town next.
Always good food and service. The service is quick and the restaurant pleasant. Worth a visit.
We were served by Maire! Amazing service, she added to the relaxed environment and made suggestions on what to eat and drink!
The food was also amazing.
I will definently be recommending the pig and tinder box to everyone!
Service was really bad, really non existent. Disappointing, has usually my go to place for great food & service!
The Pig & Tinder Box is not only the best dinning experience in Tamworth but one of the best dinning experiences I have had on this globe. The menu is diverse & exquisite (both food & drinks), the venue is comfortable & visually pleasing, staff are friendly & the music is spot on.
The lamb oyster blade for 2 - DROOL! A must for any meat lover with a healthy appetite.
Tables are too close together, no privacy, you can hear the next tables conversations, not a romantic or intimate layout, food was good,
Food was fabulous. Everything was so tasty and fresh
