As you walk into the Peacock you get the feeling of history, built in 1652, the hotel was originally used as a dower house for Haddon Hall. The link between the two survives today as Lord Edward Manners brought the hotel back into his estate in 2004, the hotel has many pieces of unique furniture and art work from the Estate. The Bar is another step back into the past with a copper topped bar and untouched surroundings, the extensive cocktail and drinks list can be enjoyed in the bar or lounge before dinner. Our restaurant team have been the proud bearers of three AA rosettes–the top ten percent in the country. We offer both an indulgent, fine dining menu & a more relaxed bar menu to suit most tastes or moods. We serve truly local ingredients including organically-reared beef & lamb from the Haddon Estate. We are open for lunch in our bar and restaurant Wednesday to Saturday and dinner in our bar Tuesday to Friday and dinner in our restaurant Tuesday to Saturday.

We visited on a drizzly winter’s evening and were immediately cheered by the fire in the characterful bar. The staff were friendly and efficient. We enjoyed a drink in the bar and then went through to the dining room. I always feel the cold, but this was also warm and comfortable. The food was all excellent. I’m vegetarian, and my options were more original than I often have, and were really flavoursome. The staff were discretely attentive and always knew who had ordered which dish. They were also enthusiastic and knowledgeable about this historic building. All in all, a memorable evening.

We had the tasting menu which is served on a Friday & Saturday evening. It was absolutely delicious! Great variety of dishes all carefully balanced in flavour and texture. Friendly knowledgeable staff. The live guitarist was superb. A few candles would be a nice addition.

Waited over half an hour once seated for a menu and only the on our request. Once order was taken and food delivered, not a single member of staff came to us again. Not to ask if all was ok or if we wanted anymore drink. We were at 8.30pm on a Friday the only two people in the bar area so I doubt it was due to being to busy. The new bar render Keena? Didn’t notice that we were sat without either drinks or menus albeit sat within a metre if his bar. However he was the only person that attempted to apologise. The food (fish & chips )were really nice however the beetroot and onion flan was pretty poor. Very soggy and very very bland. And they still had the ordacity to try and charge us a service fee. Something we just never had. Our second visit, the first wasn’t great but ok, sure won’t to be a third.

We were a little disappointed given the 3 rosette rating. We went for the tasting menu which was ok and the dishes looked beautiful but you don't only eat with you eyes. The sauces lacked depth except for the lamb sauce which was over reduced and too salty. The duck ballotine was delicious - all the other dishes looked great but under delivered. The main fish course was sea bream and cuttlefish which are 2 very cheap fish. The sea bream was very well cooked but the cuttlefish was cuttlefish and added nothing other than to put a second sea food on the dish. It need to be a quality seafood such as scallop, prawn or lobster. The bouillabaisse sauce lacked any real flavour. My partner thought the best part of this dish was the black rice, which really ought not to have been the star of the show ! The 'hand picked crab' had little flavour - I loved the mackerel tartare which shared center billing with the crab, and was a little unsure why they appeared on the same plate. Unfortunately the desserts whilst visually stunning were not very memorable. I should mention the bread - the treacle bread was lovely - if they sold it by the loaf, I'd have bought a couple ! We aren't sure whether this influenced us but it was noticeable that only 2 of the 7 courses (+ 2 additions - amuse bouche and pre dessert) were warm. I know it is the summer menu but show casing more pan rattling may have helped. The staff were all perfectly pleasant but it was clear they were predominantly casual (probably Friday / Saturday night school kids earning a few £) and they struggled between them to know what they were serving. No one poured our wine all evening which whilst sounding marginally pretentious i think is a reasonable expectation at this level. That wasn't great when you then have £40 service added to the bill for the 2 of us. Overall ok, but as always, we went for a culinary experience which we didn't feel we got, however we did pay for...

Overall, it was a nice place to have lunch. The food was ok, my BLT came to the table cold though. The waiter's service was very courteous and professional. I think for the type of food we had, it was a little pricey. For me, it just lacked atmosphere. Would I go back, if I was in the area, then probably yes. But, I would not drive to especially go there.

The ambience of the bar & garden is delightful but be careful when you book. The restaurant means you have to eat the £75 pp fixed menu. We weren’t told that we couldn’t eat the bar menu on booking but the staff managed to find us a place in the bar - a much nicer place with a better menu choice at half the price. The fish soup was superb & great value & fish & chips also superb. I was told that the chocolate parfait with mint ice cream was the best desert my friend had ever had.
