The Palm West Side Ratings and Reviews
Overall a very nice dining experience. My rib eye special was a under done. I ordered M/R and it was absolutely cooked to rare. I should have sent it back but that’s something I rarely (no pun intended) do. The special included hot and sweet cherry peppers and lobster. Sounded great. The lobster was completely unnecessary as well as over cooked. Added nothing to the dish. The peppers being snappy and acidic were a fantastic addition to the fat and tenderness of the beef. Wifey ordered Brussels Spouts as a side. These were very overdone and dried out. Her beef fillet was perfectly presented. Dessert was donut holes with cinnamon and sugar with 2 dipping sauces. No complaints here. Just yum.
Service was excellent
Apps were Caesar Salad and Tomatoes with Bufata. We order the “slightly less” on both and split them. Both apps were very good to excellent. The bufata was good but I’ve had better at lesser restaurants.
This restaurant is a bit on the pricey side and that's fine, but some of the food was below par and what you'd expect for the price point. Our calamari appetizer was cold, bland, dry and appeared to have been prepared long before it was served. Ordered the Baby Kale salad and it was anything but interesting....a pile of baby kale with some cranberries thrown in. I ordered the chicken marsala and what looked like a very generous portion when the plate was brought to the table, by the time I finished moving the massive amount of mushrooms to the side of the plate to locate the veal, there were four very small pieces of veal, not a substantial serving of veal at all. Very overdone on the amount of mushrooms covering the meat hidden underneath. The veal and sauce was flavorful enough....just not enough meat for me at all, and I'm not a very big eater. The primary reason I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone is when we entered and we had a reservation well in advance, the hostess brought us to a separate room which was devoid of customers and seated us at the very rear table in a corner. When we sat down we realized she had seated us at a table without regular restaurant chairs, but folding chairs like you'd find in a banquet hall. That's all I needed going in, knowing that our dinner bill was probably going to be greater than $600 on the other end of the meal. Didn't even wait for a waiter to approach us, and I immediately moved my family to another table with real chairs. Unbelievable really! We were still not very happy about where they had seated us in the rear of the empty restaurant....can a restaurant be any more insulting than that?? Never again! Our bill with tip for 5 was over $600 and from the point in time I was led to the rear of the empty restaurant and seated at a table with folding chairs in the utmost rear corner, I knew right then, it was not going to be a good experience. So, it appears the Palm Restaurant profiles patrons as they enter.
Always a great meal & would be 5 stars but our dessert was burned. More disappointing was that the restaurant was very busy and our waitress was practically invisible. When she was present it was only physically. She forgot several things we asked for including issues re: food allergy. We didn’t complain so as not to ruin our night but in future I will just ask for a new server.
Met my Florida cousin and daughter for lunch. Graciously accommodated my request for a quiet table in a quiet corner. Have enjoyed dinners here, but not lunch and we all loved it. Terrific ahai tuna salad and lobster club were great. Wonderful service. Highly recommend.
The Palm is a NY institution. However, the business model of overbooking is frustrating. Waiting nearly 40 minutes for a reservation is not acceptable. The food was very good, but not great. We ordered steamed asparagus and received grilled, was over charged for wine. However, service was brisk, but not rushed and the atmosphere is classic and should be experienced at least once.
The food was great and the service was deplorable. It started with being seated after 7:30 for a 7:00 reservation. We were on time because we know how busy the restaurant is on a Saturday night. No thank you or other effort was made to address the inconvenience. Then, once seated, we waited over 20 minutes for any acknowledgement that paying customers had been seated. From there we had to ask for bread, flag down restaurant staff to get drink orders delivered and generally felt like an afterthought throughout the evening. If there were another nearby option available with no advance reservation, we would have left. Food was very good, but not good enough to put up with such poor service. We won’t be back!
My first experience wasn't great but they were good enough to take an awful steak off my bill plus the manager replied to my Yelp! review and promised to make the next experience better. I didn't take him up on his offer, per se, but I did go back again to give them a second try - honestly it was pretty good (this time I had the salmon tho).
Tonight (Dec 2) I went for a 3rd visit - a special trip with my Mom who's never been to NYC before. I got the special which was a sirloin bone-in with chunk lobster on top. Mom got salmon, and we each got cocktails.
The steak was done properly but it was the most fatty, gristly piece of meat I've ever had to dissect on a plate. I had a large pile of fat accumulated by the end. No one stopped by the check on us until we were halfway through our meal when the manager on duty stopped by then our server a few minutes later. I mentioned it to our server who said sirloin is the "most marbled steak" but this was not marbling - it was large swaths or fat and gristle. He offered to prepare another steak but at that point I was 2/3 the way through and I didn't see the point. Mom also found her salmon to be quite bland, I tried it also and it was definitely not as good as it was for my last meal.
We also would have ordered another round of drinks if someone had stopped by within the first 5 (10?) minutes of our food being delivered.
All in all the servers are okay but The Palm is a mediocre, inconsistent experience and certainly not worth the price. I tried three times, sampled a variety of dishes and at the end of the day this $300 meal is the last dollar I'll ever spend at The Palm.
Tables were so close together we could barely fit. It was so loud we couldn’t even hear each other talk. It was so hot in there we couldn’t enjoy it. The food was so salty. Waited 30 Min for refill. I wouldn’t recommend to any family or friends. They need to make it comfortable for larger families. We had 6 in ours. Not worth the money.
Literally, awful. The waiter started the evening by lying about whether or not there was a sommelier at the restaurant. I asked for a recommendation and he kept pushing for these wine specials, which were the exact opposite of what style I requested. Clearly they give their staff perks for pushing "select" wines. The audacity of him to tell me there was no somm there, and then for me to later find one, was quite appalling. It gets better though. This was a table of 9, and basically everyone ordered the 50 dollar 9 oz filet. When the steak course came out, everyones was beautiful, however mine was the end of a piece of tenderloin completely filled with connective tissue, yielding the meal inedible. When the lying waiter came over to ask how everything was, I showed him my steak, that was basically a ball of fat, and he said, looks great. Eventually he took the steak back and 20 minutes later, my medium rare steak finally arrived via a petri dish and tongs. I had forewarned the staff we had a 7 o'clock show, steak arriving at 6:50, therefore they had to wrap it, and bring us the check. Needless to say this joke of an establishment charged me fully for the take out steak, with little apology. Thank god this happened to me, and not my clients who I was entraining. All in all this place is a repulsive excuse of a restaurant I will never step foot in again. Oh also, the twist in my martini was a lemon wedge - i.e. complete trash. Hugs and kisses, David!
The reservation went perfectly. The two hostesses greeted us warmly and we were seated in a great booth with fantastic servers. The food was VERY good with great portions. I can see why they have such a longstanding phenomenal reputation. The Carrot cake topped it all off for me ! The best I've had!! I have a bunch of photos to share so I'll post them on Google soon.
The veal Marsala and rib eye were cooked to perfection and very tender. We even had to take "doggie bags" home with all the leftover food. We just to eat so many items because they all looked great!!
