Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea
Tea has been a long tradition at The Drake. The Palm Court began serving Tea during the holiday season of 1982 and has welcomed the worlds' most prominent guests such as Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth, and the Empress of Japan. We look forward to adding your name to the distinguished list.

The uniqueness of the beauty of the room centers around a gorgeous limestone fountain with a giant urn as its center motif dating 275 years old, this French bronze by designer David Williams. Most importantly, the ambiance of this afternoon affair is greatly enhanced by the live harp music performed Thursday through Sunday by our musicians dressed in classical evening gown attire.

Parties greater then 8, please call 312-932-4619 and leave a message.

Join us Friday and Saturday evening to dance the night away with a live band, starting at 9pm. Check the entertainment schedule: https://www.thedrakehotel.com/explore/entertainment

This is a Christmas tradition and it continues to be consistent quality over the years. The atmosphere is elegant and is added to by the harpist in the center of the Palm Court. Our service has always been crisp, professional, and friendly. Thank you for another fond memory.

We have done high tea for the last five years and I have to say we were very disappointed this year. I do a gluten free version of high tea and my friend gets the normal high tea. The food was not great this year and the desserts left a lot to be desired. If high tea was 30 dollars this would have not been a big deal. I know you pay for the experience but they can do better. You should also be able to receive second or third helpings if you desire of one item especially if you do not like multiple of the items they brought out. We will be trying a new location next year to continue on our tradition.

Our waitress was very distracted and not interactive. This is supposed to be a nice dining experience and the waitress started the conversation with, "What can I get you?" Last time, our waiter was fun and asked us questions and made it an experience. The food was dry and it took a while for us to flag down our waitress. Overall, it would have been nice to have a better experience and really enjoy our afternoon tea.

Two ladies out to a holiday lunch and we’re very pleased...so much food, wonderful teas, and great service. We were not rushed at all. Beautiful setting and harpist. Just perfect!

Very disappointed this year, from Christina’s poor service to no carolers or coat check.
Food choices were no longer top quality either.
Couldn’t find a manager to note these problems for our table of five who have been at high tea for the past 7 years.
We probably won’t be returning...

Quality was so much better than years past. And it’s a beautiful, festive atmosphere. Service was exceptional. Price is steep - but we go once a year, so that’s how we justify it!

Women’s restroom is not handicapped accessible: due to 4 stairs and no ramp. hotel’s solution is to have female disabled guests use the men’s room and arrange to have staff keep men out. We tried this and the staff left and men walked in on us! Next time no staff was available and we had to block men from entering ourselves! Very unpleasant and made us feel women are definitely 2nd class patrons at the Drake!

I took my wife, mother and aunt to the Palm Court for tea. Everything was perfect! We had a wonderful time. Our server, Gjergj, was very pleasant and attentive. We loved the ambience: the room was gorgeous and the harpist was a very nice touch.

Well done, Palm Court!

I’ve been coming here for 5 yrs w my mom and girls for Holiday Tea. I love the special holiday feel, the decorations, the carolers, etc that make this a tradition but the food has gone downhill a bunch since we started coming. The tea sandwiches were boring and meh and the my 5YO actively didn’t like the chocolate cake (and I agreed w her and LOVE chocolate!). It was enough to make me consider booking elsewhere next yr. I hope someone from The Drake reads this and makes a change in the kitchen bc I love everything else about the experience!

Last minute trip to Chicago, wanted to do something special with my granddaughter and only tea I could get a reservation for. Harpist was a nice touch but the ambient noise was extremely loud. Lobby decor great, dining room, fancy but not holiday festive. Food? Stale, the patisserie cream swans were stale, the scones were not scones, the finger sandwiches stale as well. The tartlets, etc appeared to be foodservice but were not close to the quality of Costco sampling. I had to ask for more hot water for my teapot. Granddaughter (age 13) thought it all very grand, but noisy. I do t mind spending $$ but our tab was $120 plus tip. Never again

I took my niece here the Saturday after Thanksgiving as a present for her 16th birthday. She loved it, and I did as well! Fun that carolers came around to each table, and sang your favorite Christmas Carol. ☺️

Tea with friends during and celebrating a friend’s birthday. Wonderful service and experience. Being in the restaurant business myself, I understand trying to maximize space to accommodate as many people as possible. That being said, There wasn’t enough room on the table for the foundational tea service. Two people ended up eating from plates on their laps since the table was so jammed up. Created a bit of anxiety in what would normally be a very relaxing time. Mind you- we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and I’ll be back.

I would recommend for a one time experience. It was too crowded at Tea for a very enjoyable experience The person next to me was so close they lapped over onto my chair and elbowed me every time they moved. It was so loud you could not have a conversation. The room was beautiful and the carolers charming.

The service was terrible, there was no hostess and we had to chase someone down to get a table, even though we had a reservation. Other people started just seating themselves out of frustration, it was chaotic and unorganized. Food was mediocre, not worth the sky high price. The tea the waiter recommended to us was terrible.
We won’t be back.

It was my 12 yr old daughter and my 3rd annual trip to afternoon tea and we had a great time. Of the 3x we have been, however, this one was logically the least enjoyable. Our server was fine, but in the past we have been treated extremely well and this time it was just adequate. Also, there was a puddle of water under our table when we were seated that took about 15 min to be addressed. Food was fantastic as always. The atmosphere was perfect as always. We will return!

Over-hyped and over-priced! I am surprised by all the great reviews for the Palm Court afternoon tea. Yes, the ambiance is beautiful with the harpist and holiday decorations, but the food was atrocious. We were served stale, dry, and tasteless pastries. The scones were really over-baked dinner rolls, and the muffin crumbled apart in my fingers, it was so dry. Even my seven-year-old daughter, who usually loves anything with sugar, took one bite of the chocolate cake and declared it "blah." It was obvious that none of the food served at tea was made fresh, aside from the tea itself. I am appalled that a four-star hotel would serve one-star quality food.
The service was lacking as well. No one was out-right rude, but I would describe the service as cold and sterile. From the hostess who seated us to our server, not once did we see a smile nor feel any warmth. Also, no one came by to check on us.
Had I paid $20, I would have chalked everything up to an "off" day, and left it at that. But for an adult and child afternoon tea, after tax and tip, I paid over $100. The management here is probably laughing at all the suckers who pay the ridiculous fees for this sub-par afternoon tea. I totally fell for their ruse. Don't make the same mistake I did.

Environment: Wonderful = 5 stars. Festive and elegant.

Food: Inedible = 0 stars. Notable issues include stale wonder bread for sandwiches that were hard/dry on top and moist on the bottom, transparent (old/turned) cucumbers, sour/watery chicken salad, burned scones, and pastries with cream that was spoiled/separating including puff pastry that tasted of the cardboard container they were stored in.

Waitstaff/Server: Outstanding = 5+ stars. Extremely attentive and professional.

Hostess/Manager: Poor = 0 stars. Upon alerting the manager to the concerns and issues we had regarding the quality and condition of the food, she repeatedly stated that everything was made fresh in house daily/hourly and that nothing was prepared in advance. After spending way too much time pleading our case, she admitted that some items were supplied by an outside caterer and they "might be" older. Rather than offering to replace the items or substitute with something else, she instead gave us a 15% discount which only added insult to injury considering everything that happened.

Cost: Ridiculous = 0 stars. The price for 2 adults and 2 children (3 and 6 years old) was $169.00 and that was AFTER the price adjustment. Considering that no more than a bite was taken from items and a trip to the drive-thru was necessary immediately following to feed the kids who were by now starving, this is offensive.

Valet: Excellent = 5 stars. Very alert and accommodating.

Overall Experience: Negative = 0 stars. This was to be a final Thanksgiving and Christmas memory for a terminally ill woman to experience with her mother, sister, niece, and nephew. Unfortunately, upon arriving 15 minutes late, she was informed that she could not join them as all members of the party must be present upon seating. She instead spent the evening alone in a coffee shop across the street waiting for us to finish. We had approximately 10 minutes together while waiting for the car before having to part ways.

We attended this for the first time to experience something new around Christmas time. There were 5 of us and was given two rounds of food, at no additional charge, which was more than plenty. We were unfortunately seated behind a curtain/ wall so couldn’t see harpist or decor very well but it was secluded feeling so we were able to talk more openly rather than have a table on each side of us as most tables were.

I’d recommend going to have the experience. It’s cheaper than the peninsulas tea, and really couldn’t ask for more than what we were given at the drake.

The food was good, the service excellent. We really enjoyed the caroling, it made the experience even more memorable. There are two things that made it less than perfect: the noise level, was so noisy we had to raise our voices to be heard...the other issue is the seating along the wall, not made for tall people. All four of us were knocking our knees on the too low table and could not move our feet due to the crossed supports under the table. Very uncomfortable. Next time will have to ask ahead to be seated at a better table. Otherwise all was good!
